For anyone contemplating a SSD, the orginal Vertex 128GB drives can be had on teh ebays for ~225-250 and are imo a great value (used).

Would an i5 750 be sufficient?
Yes, an i5 750 @2.66GHz (stock) is functionally equivalent to an i7 920 @2.66GHz (stock) with 4 threads when you disregard things like uncore speed and Intel's Turbo functionality, both of which favor the 750. The 920 has hyperthreading enabled, however.
So to answer your question, a 750 paired with a good video card will do just fine.
I'm still chuckling at the minimum requirement of a GTX 460, though. If this were any other game engine, a 460 would be tossing pixels around at a much higher resolution without breaking a sweat. But for FFXIV, it's a minimum requirement. Sounds like they have a bit of optimization to do. I only hope their code allows it.
I am actually surprised they recommend an i7. that's pretty beefy. That's not even for 1920x1080
Okay, thanks for the info. I'm on a budget so cheap but worthwhile parts for me.
need advice on cpu in conjuction with gpu
i7 930 w/ 2x 5770
Not really sure what your looking for.

This the one? Might just pick it up while on the way to Microcenter next time for convenience!
The difference between 16x and 8x is negligible (something like 2%).
I generally go with the cheapest quality mobo that services my needs. I would go with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157163
I'm disappointed because I was hoping to run this shit in 1080p with my shiny new 5830. Since my RAM and dual core CPU fall short of what they recommend for a smooth 720p there doesn't seem much hope.
That's the exact board I have, and it's been perfect. I also picked it up at microcenter for convenience when getting my processor there. Only reason not to would be if you order from newegg and don't pay tax (but meh, I was impatient and wanted it RIGHT NOW vs. waiting on shipping).
Intel has cut its processor prices.

The biggest one is the i7 870 price went from just under $600 to just under $300. This is making me question whether or not I should go for the 920 or not...
Edit:
Good news, everyone!

ATI's 6000 series will be released before the end of the year. Which means its 5800 and 5900 series should get some price cuts.
Edit:
I am on a roll this morning!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.450019
If you want a cheap graphics card to bide your time until the 6000 series arrives, this combo deal is amazing.
nVidia 460 & 1250w power supply (gold cert. w/ modular cables) for $385 total. Its a $165.00 discount!
Why would you want to go with the LGA1156 when it's pretty clear LGA1366 will outlast it? (Reasoning:The hexa core i7s are LGA1366) That and you can get the 930 for $200 at MicroCenter.
You can only get cheap processors from MicroCenter if you can buy them in person. Which puts some serious geographical limitations on who can take advantage of that. There are no MicroCenters in Oregon, so that means I have to pay $250-$300.
But, point taken on the 1366 and future upgrades.
Pretty sure they just mixed up recommended and minimum. I mean look at the JP settings.
soooo how does the 5770 alone play against a nvidia 460 or 5830.
Should I just man up and get the 5830 -.-
5830 = 460 > 5770
$199 = $199 > $155 (newegg prices)
The 5830 and 460 are almost equal in terms of performance. They're about equal in price, as well. So it boils down to what company you trust more.
Starting on page 7 of THW's review...

You can find benchmarks going either way depending on variables (driver revisions, the game/benchmark chosen, which version of the cards is used, overclocking, etc). Take the variables out, the cards are roughly equal.
The 460 is better than both of those ATI cards. The card most comparable to the 460 is the 5850 (in terms of performance). The 5850 is slightly better. The 5830 is slightly worse.
