A 5870/gtx480? I think those are in that range. Or a little less for a 5850/gtx470. Might need a little bit more cpu, have you tried to unlock the 4th core (I think you can try that on your cpu if the mobo supports it)? Other than that a faster phenomII quad/hexacore is about it.

So I got my GTX460 today and installed it. Very nice card. My idle temps went from 53-55C (HD 4850) to sitting at 38C now. Load temps get up to around 70C with about 51% fan speed (set on Auto) while the 4850 got up to 79C at like..70% fan speed.

Sadly, my High Scores only went up from like 1550 to 2050ish.. so a 500 jump, but I think my CPU is just crap. X3 720 @3.2GHz. As far as Low went, it went from around 2650 to 3350ish, so a good jump there. All of this is at stock speeds too. Anxious to see what I'm able to OC this to.

    Begs the question....

    Should I spend 500 on 5870.... alone....?

    Or go with 5850 + Phenom x6 1055?

Which will give me the higher hi res score?

    I'd pick #2 myself.

The 5870 *should* give you a higher score, but only if your cpu can feed it fast enough. Since that is questionable, and a 5850 is no slouch I would prolly go that way. Actually I almost did but found a deal on the 470.

Why are you paying $500 for a 5870?

5870 should only run you ~$389.

I honestly think the 460 isn't optimized for ffxiv yet.

Those numbers sound low to me. With my 720 BE @ 2.8GHz (stock) and a 285GTX, I get 3143 on high. Are you sure you have all your drivers installed correctly? Under Device Manager -> System Devices, do you see a 3GIO device?

3GIO device? Uh.. nope. I don't see one under System devices. I do see something called an ATI SMBus or whatever, though I doubt that'd cause me to up my scores. >.>

And yeah, I made sure to clear out my ATI drivers and what not before going with the Nvidia drivers.

Also, with my monitor, my max resolution is 1680x1050, so I contributed that to the low scores on High, but who knows.

You're missing drivers, then. If you've got a 720 then you probably have either a 780 or 790 chipset.

    You need to go here:

    http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloa...downloads.aspx

Download the Motherboard/Integrated Video drivers for your OS - you want the Full Catalyst Software Suite. It contains things like your northbridge/southbridge drivers and storage drivers.

I'm thinking of upping my 5770 to the 5850. I have a Phenom II x6 1055T 2.8 GHz. I'm building the PC and so I dont have it yet to test on benchmark. Will I be ok with the 5770 or should I go with the 5850? The 5870 is a bit out of my price range.

5850 drastically outperforms the 5770. If you can afford the better card, get the better card.

The scores mine VS my friend's rig goes like this.

    P2 955 + 5770 Low settings 4100+ ~ 4300+

    P2 1055T + 5850 Low settings 4100+

    P2 955 @ 3.5Ghz + 5770 Low settings 4400+ ~ 4500+

    P2 1055T @ 3.5Ghz + 5850 Low settings 4900+ ~ >5100

No idea why (-_-lll I guess 1055T at default speeds suck at Games.

But when its on High Settings,

    P2 955 @ 3.5Ghz + 5770 High Settings 2500~2600

    P2 1055T @ 3.5Ghz + 5850 High Settings 3900 ~ 4100

    Wish I took screenies (>...<

If you're looking for a comparison between video cards, they're approximately equal and the benchmarks will point in one direction or the other depending whose numbers you believe or what game you're playing. Anand shows the GTX460 leading in most benchmarks and they don't bother doing a 2560x1600 comparison of the 5830. Tom's shows the 5830 and 460 neck-and-neck at low resolution with the 5830 pulling ahead at higher resolution.

So it appears that if you're gaming around 1680x1050, the GTX460 1GB version is probably the better card and there's probably more room for future performance improvements via drivers for the 460 than for the 5830.

With all that said, the second system has a Caviar Black which is a lot better than the Caviar Green. Green drives should be used for long-term bulk data storage. Black drives are performance drives.

Can you get the system with a GTX460 and a WD Caviar Black? :-p

I'm in the market for a new video card.

Is there any reason to get a GTX470 over a GTX460? Beside spending the extra $100, I mean.

Question for those of you who know about Laptops, since I don't know any thing about them. I'm just a Desktop guy.

Looking at my girlfriend's cheap $300 Acer Laptop, it meets all of the minimum requirements except for the CPU. It has 3 gigs of RAM, and ATI HD 3200, but is running a very weak Single Core processor. Meanwhile my current Desktop is well below the curve and I would need to upgrade both the CPU and the GPU.

Would it be worth it to spend $20 to get a Dual Core processor that would boost the laptop up to Minimum specs, or would it still not be enough? Or should I spend about $100 to get a GPU and CPU that will run the game on minimum specs for my current Desktop.

Please keep in mind I have no interest in running it on any thing other than the cheapest, lowest settings I can afford while still being able to play the game. This is a patch up so my Girlfriend and I can play together until PS3 launch in March.

For reference, her Laptop model is the Acer Aspire 5532, and I would be upgrading the TF-20 CPU to something in the TF-50 series. Current specs my girlfriend scored a whopping 121 on the Benchmark.
