So after doing a little more research I learn that my motherboard is a Asus IPIBL-LB, and apparently HP has locked the bios on it making it more difficult to overclock. With my 2.4 ghz quad core what would be a good graphics card that would be compatible with this motherboard. Is the HD 5770 Jojimbo recommended still a good choice if I wasnt planning on overclocking in the near future, and is anyone aware if its compatible with my motherboard?(couldnt find any info on this)
I don't think you can run into compatibility issues with any 'modern' MB unless you planned on SLI/CF (not all MBs can do either, some can only do one, some need a new bios etc) and that MB can't do CF/SLI.
What model is your PC? The size of the case will effect what cards/PSU you can get (some prebuilts use their own PSU sizes).
I just ordered all of the parts for my new computer. I feel slightly nauseous because I don't drop large sums of money very often. I am excited to get everything and put it together though.
Case: Lian Li PC-P50WB (black aluminum mid-tower w/ black interior)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-X58-UD3R
CPU: Intel i7 920
Heatsink: Prolimatech Megahalems w/ 2x Yate Yoon 120mm fans & Shin Etsu grease
Memory: OCZ Gold DDR3 1600 6gb
GPU: Gigabyte ATI Radeon 5870 1gb (870mhz)
PSU: Corsair 1000 watts
OS Boot Drive: Intel X25M 80gb SSD
Main Drive: Western Digital Black Caviar 1tb 7200rpm
Rom: Lite-On BluRay Drive 8/16/48
My goal is to hit a 5K score on high. I am going to attempt to OC the cpu to 4ghz.
Edit:
Amazon had 80% of what I needed for cheaper than Newegg and with better rebates, and I got free 2-day shipping on everything because of that free student prime shipping.
Model is HP Pavilion a6552f, heres a link to the pc and motherboard specs.

According to HPs site they use standard ATX PSUs, however looking at some PSU specs they sizes they give are larger in some dimensions than what HP gives.
Might be worth checking to see how the PSU is fitted (ie is it free and just screwed in place or does it sit in a cage) and how big it is (don't use anything metal if you measure it).
Seems to be free and screwed in at the back and its roughly 5.5 length x 3.5 height x 6 width.
That makes things easier, so any 450~550+W PSU will work (Corsair is recommended, however there are some other chaper brands that you can make do with).
GTX 460 could be bottlenecked by a stock Q6600 in some games. If trying to keep to a budget I would recommend a 5770.
There are two Q6600s at stock on benchmark board with a 5770 and 4870 (both similar in performance) and they are in standard/fairly high range.
Hey fairly computer illiterate, was wondering if someone could tell me if my current 2year old computer will handle ff14 decently.
CPU: HP a6235x
Processor: 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.00GHz
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 2400
RAM: 3.00 GB
Thanks
Radeon 2400 is like a $45 videocard, so no, it's pretty much trash. If you upgrade to a decent videocard in the $150-200 range you should be able to play it at 720p.
For anyone asking if their videocard is good enough... just look it up on amazon, if it sells for cheap like $50-$100 then there is your answer, means it's a piece of crap.
If you buy a $150 card like a Radeon 5770 it should be smooth at 720p, if you want to play with every setting maxed out @1080p then yeah it's better to just get a new machine cause you would have to upgrade everything, new motherboard, new cpu, new ram, etc.
Just depends on how anal you are about getting the best possible graphics, if you have money spend then go for a new pc, but it's still possible for you to play it well with just a new videocard.
Heard the GTX460 1gig is good enough to max out the game, ordered a Phenom II x4 955 and 4 gigs of ddr3.
Looking for a laptop that'll be able to run FFXVI, SC2 and GW2 at max/near max settings with a 1k-1.2k budget.

looking at this at the moment but not sure I should go with such a low video card.

Buying a GTX460 1GB SC FTW in early september, then a 23-24 inch monitor. Owell, atleast the game will look amazing!
Just for reference, I'm running the same processor with 6g ram, ran into the same problems with PSU etc. I decided to go with a 650w PSU and 5770 GPU to (a) tide me over a couple months to get started and see if the game was worth the investment of a new system and (b) SE hasn't announced the sys req yet to run the game 3 screen/ 3d, which is what really got me interested.
720 scores were right around 3650 on a 1900x1200 moniter,
1080 scores were about 2520.
So far everything is running cool and quiet.
I have no idea what that will mean in terms of playablility once the game actually launches but this will probably end up being a #2 CPU for dual boxing once I get a new system anyway.
Changing the PSU was easier then I thought it would be, although I wish I had slightly smaller fingers.
Corsair 650w is on sale this week at BestBuy for 79$, not sure if that's a good price but I hate waiting on mail order stuff.
Hope that helps.
Which Corsair did you get, there are 2 650, the HX and TX. Both are good but the HX is better at efficiency and voltage regulations. I have the 850 and was not bad at $175.00, just waiting to install sometime this month after I get the case and MB
FWIW, I was getting 2700 on my bench but in game it still felt laggy in the city and around lots of people. It's playable (if I upgrade my old system's CPU) for sure. I'd still think a 5850 or higher equivalent would be better, something around 3700-4500 is smooth playing I'm guessing
I got the TX >< (only one they had).
Selecting a grapics card is so difficult, there's 53000 reviews on each one, there's nvidia haters and ati haters, power consumptions and running temperatures.. I think what got me on the 5770 was all the reviews about it running cooler then the 5800/460-80 tier of cards and all the posts about HP's having poor airflow, etc. Did I miss something on the 5800 series? Alot of the reviews on the 5870 said they run hot and heavy and all the prices I was seeing were right around the 400$ range, but I don't remember reading much on the 5850s. If there's a big difference in price between the 5850 and 70 I might just return the 5770 but if not I'll probably just stick with it and use it for ffxi and as a backup once I get a new system. (I'd probably only be using it for a month or two anyways I just didn't want to go spend 4-5k on a new system until SE firmed up the requirements on running 3d or 3 moniter).
After looking at the 3ds on display at BB I'm pretty impressed, it's actually a totally different experience then watching 3d movies at a theater, I still don't know if I'd want to game for hours on end in 3d but it sure as hell is neat.
What I'm speculating on now is maybe 3 45"s One 3d in the middle and 2 2ds on the sides, and running 3screen 2d or single screen 3d depending on mood. Could I run different size moniters and still do 3 screen assuming they were all 1080s? I know it might not look as seamless but the perspective should remain consistant?
