Here are a couple of options:
$189.99 MSI X58 Pro-E LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
$194.99(before $20 MIR)ASUS P6T SE LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
$234.99 ($before $30 MIR)ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
$239.99 ASUS P6X58D-E LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
$239.99 ASUS Rampage III Gene LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
$209.99GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
They all have mixed reviews with the exception of the Rampage III Gene which has a higher price tag, but it is a micro ATX so the expansion slots are few in number. There are other good boards, these are just some of the cheaper ones I could find. I like the Asus P6Ts.
Thanks for the links.
Another question: What's better, i5 760 oc'd to 4ghz, or stock i7930?
Probably the i5 760, they are close in performance anyway (for gaming).
That is an odd question, why can't the i7 be overclocked? I'd say the i5 but it depends on what you are doing.Someone else would be more qualified to answer that one correctly than me. An i5 won't fit on any of those motherboards I just linked. Be sure to have adequate CPU cooling and case cooling just fyi.
Yeah I know, but ideally I'd want to build something that performs well but on a budget. For $100 more, I don't know if I can rationalize a i7 930 over an i5 that's $100 cheaper if they were to perform very similarly. I'm not even sure what I want to do at this point since I'm still figuring out stuff. It's like I could either build a system for around $500 that could play FFXIV decently/well enough and not feel bad about it, or go the extra mile and make sure the system plays it fairly flawlessly for another $300.
Basically I want the best for as cheap as possible and I'm trying to figure out where sacrifices in price won't mean a terrible decrease in performance. If I spend money on a system, I'd want it to handle this game well and be a dramatic step up from what I have now (2.4ghz core 2 duo, geforce 8600m gt, 4gig ram)
Oh yeah, and not to mention something that would play it better than a PS3 because then I would feel bad about spending money if I could something better for only $300.
an OC'd i7 will outperform an OC'd i5. An i5 will do just fine for FFXIV. I would start researching now if I were you and just wait until 2-3 weeks until release to make purchases so you can decide on whats out then and the prices then. I say 2-3 weeks because you may get some DoAs or random set back. Newegg has lots of bundles, combos, and daily deals. Just keep an eye out for what is a good deal. You could also go with an AMD x4 and overclock if you know how/want to. Those sell for $89-119 for 2.6Ghz to 3.0.
So I picked up a GeForce GTS250 to try that out for ff14, hoping it should be more than enough.
Altho I cant get it working yet, I have it installed but it is just blank screen and the fan does run, I do not have external power hooked up to it, It did say it was optional for some of these cards but obvs it isnt for this card. I cant hook it up to the cpu's power cuz the adapter has 2 6pin PCIs, and all thats available in my PC is 4 pin molexs. Anyone give me advice on this before I have to take it in? Do I just need to get a couple 6 pin > 4 pin adapters and that'll get me goin?
Ok so first of all does your motherboard take PCIE 2.0? If so then your fine, but need a new Power Supply.
I'd need a little more information to answer you.
What is your computer or motherboard? or at least what is your DXDiag Stats?
IE .. I have
Ausus Striker II Extream
Q6600 - 2.4 Quad Core
4 Gig Memory
Note: I am upgrading my Video Card too 460 GTX - and I'm going to have to buy a new power supply for 6 wire connector.
PS3 version doesn't come out for 6 months after PC version; personally I'd spend the extra $300, performance bonus for the money is fairly good. I'd say 6 gig memory and low end i7. Or better yet if you want a budget computer why not got with AMD?
Seriously Mid rage AMD's arn't bad at all... that's their market. Intel's market the upper end.
Seriously look into getting an AMD... I'm an Intel person, but if I had to go on a budget I'd get an AMD in a second.
Yeah this may end up happening.

I'm trying to figure something out that's slightly better than the $550 computer, but cheaper than the $1000 one.
Didn't notice there was a system info for Pc's and the motherboard model is EG43M.
Still gotta look up the PSU and look for a Graphics card to upgrade that I can afford. Not spending like £300 just for some super hardware.
I want to know if my ps3 will play ffxiv
Spoiler: show
PCI Express x16 is what you motherboard can handle.
I'm afraid your not going to be able to use the 260 even with the Power Supply your MB isn't going to be able to take it... sounds like your computer is ~ 3 years old. I saw 8400 video cards availible that you could use... but that's your limit.
Actually looking up spec's your computer could be as old as 4 years old no younger than 3... My computer is ~2 years old and was one of the first with PCI-E 2.0.
Sorry...
Quick shopping for you two -- Low end decent computer -- Mwave is a good place to go thru... you have to fax a letter of CC authorization to them, but besides that they setup a barebones for you or if you purchase MB they pin and test your MB.
