update, if your getting gtx460. Go for the new galaxy model super oc'ed, it beats a 5850 and is nearly on par with a 470. Newegg has it for 245 with a rebate.

I have a question for all the pros out there.
I have an older computer. It's a Core2Duo E7200 2.53GHz. I used to have a 8800 GT when I first built the computer but 6 months ago it blew up and I decided to spend some extra cash so I didn't have to upgrade again for a while and put a 5850 into the system.
When I run the benchmark i get 3100ish on both HIGH and LOW settings. This pretty much means my older CPU is a huge bottleneck right now, correct?
I can't afford to go to an i7 because that would require a new motherboard and memory as well so my question is this:
How big of a performance boost would I see if I upgraded to Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz. Would it be extremely noticeable and worth the money?
I'm by no means a pro or anything, but I'm pretty sure that you'll be able to run the game just fine if you seriously managed to get 3100 points on high settings. And I'm not sure would it be "extremely" noticeable because at least on high settings the benchmark results seem to rely a lot on your GPU, but on low settings you would probably see a slight bump in your points. But as I said I wouldn't be too worried since you already are on the better side on the benchmark score scale.
I'm away from home ATM so can't use the benchmark to see for myself, but how does this look:
E8500 Core 2 Duo
9800 GTX+
4GB RAM
Will this play the game smoothly at full settings? I'll DL the benchmark and test for myself when I'm home, but for the moment I'm out of the country.
3100 is still pushing it on higher settings. Honestly to be playing "comfortable" is 4000 on near max settings (not AO or DOF/AA)
If you want to tone it down to less than 1080 then it should be ok.
Does anyone know if I can expect for Phenom ii x4 black edition to drop in price in the next couple months?
I think I would like to upgrade from the dual core to a quad core.
the phenom ii x4 is cheap enough as it is, if you have a microcenter near you. I got a 965BE with a very high end msi mobo for 190$ =D They have excellent bundle deals compared to anyone else. The mobo is practically free.
I just thought I read a week or so ago that Intel was dropping prices on their cpu's and that the effect of that would be that AMD would start dropping prices as well. If that is the expectation then it makes sense to me to wait until that happens. I already have a MSI motherboard that is relatively decent (as I understand it) so really no need for another one.
So i'm building a new rig for FF14. I'm pretty much down to the video card(s).
I was gonna Xfire 2 5770's, but it seems going with a 5850 was the better approach because I could then Xfire that later if needed. Question is... What's gonna be better, 2 5850's Xfired, or 2 460's SLI'd?
Other Parts of the rig:
Intel i5 750
6 GB Gskill DDR3 1333
3 WD HDD 500 GB - RAID 5
750W PSU
If you get the Q9550 and overclock it, you could get good performance out of the game. At stock clock, you'd likely choke down to about 20 fps in town/large crowds (I get about 15-17). Benchmark is meaningless, right now my friend who benched 2000 to my 3500 gets better fps than me simply because for whatever reason right now the game is extremely dependent on the raw speed of your CPU. He has a Core 2 Duo@4ghz/Radeon 4870 and I have a Quad [email protected](can't get it stable at a higher clock, I think it's my memory or this shit mobo)/Radeon 5850.
You could likely get the processor you have to 3.5ghz without sweating it much at all and it'd run the game decent as long as you stay away from crowds. If they don't optimize it, it'll be just like FFXI where a massively OCed processor that can just brute force the horrible engine will be the winner.
Scaling in SLI tends to be better than Crossfire. As a single card, a 5850 should perform better, in SLI/Crossfire I'd imagine it'd be pretty close. 2 GTX 460s will end up costing you less though. If you're just going to run one card though, the 5850 is a great card for the price. But then again, so is the GTX 460, they're probably the best cards out right now as far as price/performance ratio goes.Originally Posted by Snuts
Not sure if any of you use AnandTech for research/comparisons, but they recently just launched a section on the site where you can get ... well, I'll just quote the page:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/2Bench gives you access to much of our internal benchmark data so that you can compare the products you're interested in without searching for an older review. Within a product category (e.g. CPUs) we tried to keep the testbeds as consistent as possible (e.g. same drives, memory sizes, etc...) so you can make reliable comparisons between products.
We currently allow CPU, SSD and GPU comparisons using Bench however we will be adding more categories in the future. If you have any requests please email us directly. Any technical problems, please email our webmaster.
You can see charts comparing all modern CPUs/GPUs, or select two chips/cards for a direct, more detailed, comparison. Might be of some use in answering questions about what's better than what.
Wondering what ppl are averaging fps on the beta. Seems I cant get a solid 30 fps even at low settings, either this is really poorly optimized or it doesn't use up half of my graphic card. 22 fps and lots of choppiness.
I get anywhere between 45 and 60 out in the field depending on how many mobs are around. As soon as PCs start coming near my fps starts tanking, I usually have around 30 at the camps unless it's especially crowded. When I enter town though it drops to 15-20. I think the game is just poorly optimized atm, it's not really using my video card much either.
For reference:
Core 2 Quad [email protected] ghz
ATI Radeon 5850, only OCed slightly via Catalyst
8 gb DDR2 RAM
I went from 50-75 FPS pre-patch to 25-30 max with exact same settings post-patch.
Guys, I just found out I won an EVG P55 FTW Motherboard from a contest...
How excited should I be? I'm knowledgeable of everything BUT motherboards (and desktops). =X Please don't flame me... I know it's not exactly FFXIV related, but this seems to be where all of the computer geniuses hang out
My current rig is a laptop with a Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26 and a GeForce 9800M GTS. I've been saving up to build my own desktop. So, is this so godsend that i'm just to ignorant to fully appreciate at the moment? =X
VERY! its a good product(can make you a decent profit if you sell)
wont be any good if you want to move to the I7 thought since it is not a 1366 socket.

I'm a noob to overclocking - does anyone have any recommendations for a good overclocking program to use?
Also; what's the program people use to see their cpu/gpu activity/temperature etc. in-game? The only thing I know how to do is fps, not temperature etc.
