Just wondered what you guys thought about my processor? My current rig is using a Core 2 Duo E8500 o'clocked @ 3.6 GHz. I've been thinking of upgrading myself for XIV but if I upgrade the processor then I basically have to rebuild the rig as I would need a new MB (it won't take any of the i5 or i7 chips).

So would an i5 or i7 quad core chip see much improvement? Bearing in mind my current Dual core is running at 3.6 GHz. Worth upgrading? Or would I be better off keeping what I have and just upgrading the Graphics card? (Current card is Radeon HD4850 @ 512MB). I can buy a MB and processor combo deal from my local supplier with o'clocked i5 or i7 at 4.0 GHz. But ofc this is gonna cost $'s which I want to avoid if I can.

Lets see what happens in open beta. At 720p, 2 cores just isn't enough from my testing, even at 4ghz on phenoms, which should be pretty close to a 3.6ghz core2. My testing was done with a GTX 460 however, so perhaps even at 720p a 4850 might be limiting you. Run the benchmark at your preferred play resolution and watch your cpu and gpu usage to see which is capped at 100% most of the time.

How does this game run on a GeForce 9600? My GPU is broke and getting a replacement could take weeks, maybe even after the FFXIV launch. So I'm thinking about buying a used 9600 on eBay to make do until then and then selling it when my fixed GPU arrives. Is FFXIV playable on this card?

If this is the score to play the game properly I'd be more than happy >_>

I have the Asus G73Jh-A1 720QM- i7 processor (asus 1 button over clock to 3.33GHz), 8 GB DDR3 1333, replaced one of the 2x 500Gb 7200rpm disks with a 120Gb SSD and it has a ATI 5870. Been playing since alpha and when they upgraded to beta the laptop was able to handle the game soo much better but that was the case in general. I get almost 4000 on low for the benchmark and just under 3000 on high, but i play it 1920x1080 no AA and settings on high and it runs very smoothly.

On a side not there will be no more ATI graphics cards AMD will be rebranding them all as AMD radeon etc...

Did they lower the Min Requirements recently? I posted a while when the requirements seemed to be much higher; Quad Core, etc etc.

In my experience with an e8400 @ 3.6 it was not enough. Even if you have a more powerful video card with a dual core its not gonna be smooth. Highly recommended to get a quad at 3.0 ghz at least.

I'm really new to this PC upgrading stuff and I was wondering if a PC with these specs can handle FFXIV?
    Graphics Card:
    http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Supercloc...3284437&sr=8-1
    Processor:
    http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Processo...3284443&sr=8-1
    8 GB of Ram.
Windows 7 Ultimate. (Which is better, 32 or 64-bit?)
I'm really not sure if that's all the info I should be providing, again I'm new at this stuff.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, Yes, No, second. You need to provide much more info.
GPU is a great choice, newegg has a 10% off on all 400 series cards not to long ago (it might still be in effect but i thought it ended 8/31)
CPU is a great choice if you live near a microcenter get it for $199
8GB of ram means you did not do your research and almost certainly means your motherboard is wrong too:
-The i7 requires a 1366 socket (in the title of the processor in case you are wondering), also it is tripple channel memory so you will want 6GB of ram or 12GB
-Also you would need 64bit windows to support 6GB or 12GB of ram so dont buy the 32bit.
Dont forget a power supply (needs to feed the power hungry 930 and 460), a case, hard drives, cd/dvd drive, etc

Thank you very much for the info, like I said, I'm really new at this, so I don't really know most of this stuff.
I'll change a few things, hopefully when it's all sorted out I'll post again, just to make sure.
As for the case, hard drives, cd/dvd drives, I really didn't think it'd matter to post those, but I guess it does, just goes to show how much of a newbie I am this, again, thanks a ton for the info!

(incoming horrible analogy) a computer is a jigsaw puzzle. there are lots of pieces from many different sets, you have to make sure all your pieces came from the same puzzle and it will work fine.

If you buy a newer motherboard that supports 6gb/s reads then you dont want to buy a hard drive that doesnt take advantage of it.
If you buy an EATX motherboard you want the case to support EATX.
If you buy a 2.5" SSD your case needs to have a 2.5" drive bay.
    etc etc etc

I certainly see your point, I'll definitely keep that in mind when selecting the pieces, thanks again!

This maybe a very silly question and apologies in advance.

I'm currently having a PC built with an i7-930. Now they've emailed me, apparently out of stock yet would upgrade me to the i7-950 for an extra £11 (around $18).

Now, silly question, is this worth it? Reason I ask is that it seems such a little cost for an boost :s

    Thanks

If they let you buy it and it was marked as "in stock" then make them pay the difference. it is an upgrade worth considering.
