Is there any difference between ATI Radeon HD 5770/5870? Friend is buying pre-built from Dell and wants to know if the difference is price is reasonable.
Since the retail version is now out, does FFXIV now support dual gpu cards or is still a no no iirc from beta?
Depends on the resolution the game will be played at. If it's 1680x1050 or lower, the 5770 might be enough. If it's 1080p or higher, or if your friend wants to enable AO/DoF, then the 5870 might be better. Also, here are some benchmarks for some other games comparing the two cards.
Thanks for the link, i'll let him know. He's using a 23" LG widescreen monitor.

amidoinitrite?
$700 to upgrade from my FFXI rig to this.
High 4115
How will this PC run the game?
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8300 2.50 GHz
8GB RAM
Windows 7 64 bit
ATI Radeon HD 4670
Do I need to upgrade my graphics card to play the game at decent settings?
I don't know if that CPU would really cut it for "decent" settings. From what i've gathered, XIV is pretty CPU and GPU dependent. Also appears that CPU has a questionable quality-heatsink, and there's some wonky shit going on with temps in CPUs at almost all settings for some. The GPU seems alright, though i'm no expert by any means.
Maybe someone with more experience/knowledge could add to this, but you could run on low settings (if it were even in doubt). I don't know what exactly your definition of "decent" would be, but I would be abit hestitant about saying it would be possible, if it's in the middle. Frame rates would probably drop pretty bad in cities, among other places.
The original machine was an Athlon 64 X2 2.8GHz, ASUS M2 series board, Windows XP Pro 64-bit, 4GB DDR2, Warlock Power 750W PSU(funny story about this PC and PSUs, see below) and EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB card. I've upgraded to the Phenom II X4 965 BE, on an ASUS M4 series board, Windows 7 Home Premium, 2x2GB OCZ DDR3, and an XFX Radeon 5850. Keeping the same case and PSU. The initial machine(built three years ago?) scored 2079 on the benchmark before upgrades.
**Unrelated anecdote** When I first built that machine, I used the 500W that came with the case. FFXI played perfectly, because it wasn't really pulling on that 8800. Crysis however, was another matter entirely. The 8800 GTS is perfectly capable of running Crysis at near max settings, even as a single unit. However, the shitty PSU that came with the case couldn't feed the monster. Ever hear a bug zapper? An exploding PSU makes the same sorts of noises. Lots of buzzzzzz and pops and crackles and then the acrid smell to accompany the black screen. Yeah so, no biggie, was just a shitty PSU right? So I go down to the little computer parts store on the corner and buy another 500W for 40 bucks. Off I go back home, swap parts, boot machine, everything's kocher. This time when I boot Crysis, it lasts all of 2 minutes before it performs the same pyrotechnics. Ordered the Warlock Power 750W that day and haven't regretted it yet.
Hey guys, looking for some suggestions on this build. I'm concerned its too pricey, and its too over the top? Or what needs changing completly? I'm not really computer savvy.
The rest of the post makes more sense if you click on the link to go to the build in the shop's website:

Has there been an explanation on why there's so much fucking input lag when browsing the UI/menus? Are they still doing server-side commands? My game will run at 60fps, with vsync on, and I have game mode enabled on my Plasma so the input lag to my TV from my PC is nil, but the fucking menus are slow as SHIT and very fucking annoying
Why?
1GB+ gfx should be plenty, but that processor, I have a 2.5GHz CPU and I have a box fan on my computer case keeping it cool enough to run.
Phenom II Dual Core 3,4MHz
4GB DDR3 1600MHz
HD5770 512MB DDR5
will do for any decent settings? not plannin to upgrade PC for XIV or at all atm (X360, PS3 at home) so asking if its worth to touch FFXIV with this config
Just thought I'd post my rig here, since people are still worried if theirs can run FFXIV:
AMD Athlon64 x2 5600+
8gb DDR2 800 RAM
EVGA GeForce 8800gts(320mb DDR3 edition)
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Windowed at 1280x720 resolution on a 32" LCD TV as my monitor
I run it fine, windowed. Slight amount of artifacting and it occasionally crashes when I try to run a movie or something in the background. I contribute the ability to run it at all to my 8gb of RAM, I doubt that my processor could handle that under any other circumstances, lol. Processor temps generally peak around 59-60C, didn't monitor GPU, but it wasn't getting any hotter than normal or it would have showed up red on my temp program. You do NOT need a mega rig to run this game decently. Cutscenes and opening movie play beautifully.
bit of an update, anyway i didnt get the build i mentioned above, but i have a fan based, i7 970 with a gtx 480, nothing overclocked
the only problem is the computer runs fine in anything except ff14 !
i literally played ff14 for about 30mins, but then the graphics card overheated and pc shutdown; and this was on standard settings...
halpdid i get a dud graphics card?
gpu overheating is nothing unusual. turn off AO (or get some airflow in your case so it doesnt overheat)
Also make sure your card has the proper max heat threshold set so it isnt claiming overheating at 100c
New Nvidia driver out today, haven't had a chance to test it cause i'm at work, but i'll post it here if anyone wants to test it.

Has the AO 'diagonal shadow' bug been fixed or has anybody found any ati drivers where the bug goes away ?
