Im currently waiting for an external DVD drive to arrive before i install but I wanted to ask how people think FFXIV will run on my laptop? It is an Alienware M11x R2 - (i7 640UM - Nvidea GT335M 1GB - 8GB DDR3 Dual Channel @ 800 MHz & 500GB@7200rpm HDD)

It currently plays Dragon Age Origins & Batman Arkham Asaylum on full settings with little problems other than a small bit of screen lag here or there but those games are 2+ years old. Thanks

I ran the benchmark on my m17x R3 with a Nvidia 460M @ 1920x1080 and I was really disappointed in the results. I have not installed the game yet though so perhaps it will actually run better than what the benchmark indicated.

Thanks for the reply! I ran the benchmarks on my gaming PC at home and got very low and poor scores but that was not reflective at all when i played it. I have a i7-920, 6GB DDR3 1333mhZ, ATI Saphire Toxic HD5850 1GB & Intel 80 GB SSD and the game runs on full / high settings with no lag so id say your machine will handle it just fine. I think the M11x might suffer on the higher settings but ill let you know when the External Drive arrives and i install it.

My desktop is pretty similar to yours and it ran reasonably well, but there was some FPS loss in cities. For some reason the GPU usage would drop considerably the moment I stepped into town, but when I walked outside it went right back to 99% and my FPS was fine again. I run a i7 920 with 5870 Sapphire Vaporx card and 6gigs of ram.

For my m17x r3, I have a SandyBridge 2630 i7 with a 460m and 6gigs of memory. I scored about half as well as my desktop at 1920x1080. My FPS dropped down into the 20s during the boat scene.

That said, I think I'll try to install the game on my laptop tonight and see how it is running around the game.

Just worried since every other game I play the card never peaks like .. 63c, in the field it sometimes will peak 68
I'd think you should have another 300mhz at least in your cpu, that might get you just a little bit, and should be closer to capping your card, though 90% is pretty darn close. Being around trees/shrubs with AA really likes to load the gpu too.

Question for SSD users: Do you get stuttering when you run around uldah for the first time when its loading everything? I've noticed when i run around town for the first time in a game session it stutters horribly until it has loaded everything, and after that it runs the normal 30-40 fps I think. I even went and set up a raid 0 this weekend and while it helped some its still pretty ugly.

Not really helpful, I know, but nope.

300mhz in my CPU? It's the hexcore though. My GPU is already overclocked, my biggest frustration is I look at the 6xxx series and don't notice a damn difference in clock speeds, as per new egg specs, am I missing something? Will upgrading to a 6xxx series card drastically increase game play to where I can have it on pretty much max settings?

Ohhh, your cpu is not overclocked. I was thinking it was because I was thinking of my 1055t, very similar to yours but the factory speed is 2.8ghz. I've run mine up to 4ghz but that was pushing it pretty hard so I stay around 3.6ghz now. You can squeeze out more power on the cpu but you'll need to read up a lot before doing so. And if you went to a 6750 I don't think you'd see much gains if any, you'd have to go to another tier like the 68xx or 69xx. I'm pretty happy with my 5850, can pretty closely cap the fps in the field on 1776x1000 2xAA/std drawings/no ao or dof.

Hey Avelle, so installed and all updated and can login fine. Only trouble is servers seem to be down now and i keep getting the damned - "Unable to detect directx device. the program has shut down. Please restart Final Fantasy XIV" error message even though Direct x and drivers are all up to date. So even when they are back up not sure ill even be able to play. If i cared more to play the game id definately give it a go but couldnt be bothered.

How did you get on if you have tried?!

Ok I'm looking at getting a new graphics card, constantly lagging/having GPU sit at 90% regardless of settings is pissing me off.

What card should I look into?

    Currently have

    Core Clock:
    700MHz [OCd to 805]
    Stream Processors:
    720 Stream Processing Units
    Effective Memory Clock:
    1150MHz (4.6Gbps) [OC'd to 1320]
    DirectX:
    DirectX 11
    OpenGL:
    OpenGL 3.2

Was looking at the 6950, would the extra 1 gig of ram, double stream processors really show significant boost?

    Chipset Manufacturer
    AMD
    GPU
    Radeon HD 6950
    Core Clock
    830MHz
    Stream Processors
    1408 Stream Processing Units
    Effective Memory Clock
    1300MHz (5.2Gbps)
    Memory Size
    2GB
    Memory Interface
    256-bit
    Memory Type
    GDDR5

Is that a 5750 you currently have? If so then yes, 6950 would be a large improvement over your current card (it's a bit over twice as powerful).

Would this setup run FFXIV w/o lag? http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Pu...umber=23734148 If not what would I need to change.

I'd probably try and get a quad core of some sort. You could play FF on that, though you might start to have some problems in crowds.

Could sub in this mobo and CPU for $20 more or so. Plus, the Phenom II will overclock readily, it's a snap to get 4 ghz if you have a half decent cooler (which would raise the price by $30 or so, but even stock I think it's a better choice). Sandy Bridge CPUs are awesome, but AMD is still great for a super budget build in my opinion. Everything else in there looks fine, though I'm not sure how much overhead you'll have with that PSU.

If I want to stay with intel and can afford to get a bit more expensive where should I put my money?

Can't go wrong with an i5 2500k and P67 or Z68 motherboard. It'll end up costing you like $150 more, but it's an amazing performer for the price. I have an i7 2600k (in games the 2500k performs virtually the same, I got the 2600k because I do stuff like fraps and video encoding) and if you are willing to overclock a little bit, it's about the only thing that can get you capped or close FPS everywhere in FF14.

How does this setup look? Any ideas for changes would be welcome, especially if they shave a few bucks off.

You are going to want a lot bigger power supply then that. I wouldn't go under 600w and if you want to be able to upgrade your rig in the future, I would invest in an even bigger power supply.

Agreed. At least a 600/650W one for sure.
