You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

defaulting to parental blame is silly to me.

[edit] especially considering they'd have no idea that their kid would die just by going to a camp

The parents aren't shitty because the kid died, they're shitty because they sent him to a camp for internet addiction.

You understand that's what we're saying right? If the kid had gone to camp and not died, they'd still be shitty parents.

on that note, I still think it's silly to assume it was a small issue without knowning the facts. Innocent until proven guilty?

amazingly enough, sometimes good parenting isn't enough. if someone is really in trouble there is nothing wrong with seeking help.

to say the parents are to blame for his death is just ridiculous imo.
I agree. Without more information no one can put the parents or the child at fault. Seeking help when the situation becomes as dire as one suspects it did is what most people would have ADVISED the parents to do.

On the other hand, what kuno said was particularly hilarious :X

I really don't think there is a single situation where a parent can be justified in getting help parenting for "internet addiction". Your kid is suicidal? Your kid is homicidal? Sure, get help from a professional. Your kid won't get off his ass and go outside? You should have beaten him more as a child.

Just think, if they had only beaten their child, he wouldn't have gotten beaten to death by someone else.

This is why GM Dave was so upset in his post about this, because he is a parent and believes in the kind of parenting that involves a different, more time-consuming and often frustrating kind of reaction to discipline issues in children.

To a parent like him, it is much better for the child to take away his computer or regulate it, than sending him away to have others "learn" these habits into the child. This method involves much more interaction and patience, often more rebellion from the child and more frustration. In my opinion, if a parent is not willing to spend the time doing those things, they should not raise a child.

I am not in that culture though, it is easy for me to project what is possible here onto what is possible there.

But there is no way that I would isolate this kind of parenting to other countries. Here, there are plenty of parents who let the tv, teachers and counselors do the parenting that they should be doing themselves. I see that shit every day.

His blog states it rather well, but it is upsetting like the post.

They had read an ad about the camp online and hoped the experience would help rid their son of his Internet addiction.

The above just stuck out for me when I was reading the article.

Unfortunately, shitty parents are shitty and their kids are the ones who pay the price.

My parents thought about sending me to military school once. Even took me for a tour.

The guy giving the tour was going on about how there's no corporal punishment, but you have to walk circles in the courtyard with a huge bag for hours on end if you do shit wrong.

Then he went into how super effective that is, and how the kids never have fights anymore etc. etc.

Then some kid limped past us with 2 black eyes and bruises and scrapes all over his arms.

They decided that place wasn't a good idea.

they are a heavy communistic society, and have been for hundreds of years. It is ingrained in them the idea to try and act like others. They don't strive for individuality like we do here.

You may not like it, but forcing your beliefs on a culture with different standards/goals is like trying to force a cat to act like a dog. It can happen, but you can't expect it to happen right away, and should you even try?

Obligatory "if only he had a gun."

And it's hard to judge whether it was "bad parenting" or not when we don't know much about the situation(although they obviously weren't GOOD parents either).
