Taken from the pXI website:
3. Will pXI be free?
This is a potentially misleading question. Yes, pXI, the private server software, will be free of charge. However, currently you are required to have an active POL account and active, registered FFXI Content ID in order to use the FFXI client with pXI servers. This means that you must be able to connect and login normally before being able to use pXI. This serves as a protective measure for the Development Team to ensure that the project stays legitimate, and that SE has no reason to attempt to harm it or those working on it.
Here's some messing around I did earlier over the weekend. I was able to modify gear and make the changes reflect on the server. I slightly messed up on the name as the logname shows Tranquil Tunic, but the name in the description shows Tranquil Robe

can you edit merits yet?
From what I've seen merits aren't in place yet. However, I believe you can edit the SQL table to raise the skill caps and add whatever skill level you want to on your character. When I created mine I had 0 in all skills but I made a simple edit in the tables which holds my char info and capped all my skills except staff. You can also raise the level cap (up to 250) but it does cause some strange things to happen such as MP bar disappearing at times.

The Hard Cap is 255 however once u hit 76 the exp bar will just say 0 probably cos the game itself hasnt been programmed above lvl75. Another thing to note is while i was able to use some spells that arent available to players in the game (Diaga II, Poisonga II, Banishga III, Break, Curse, Virus) i wasnt able to use either Comet or Meteor or any of the highest level spells (eg. Thundaga V) as it would just say command error tru the menu. Would be nice to know how to program them to work. Also has some broken spells atm for example Death is in the menu but has the icon for a ninja spell and the actual spell is under (spell 243) instead. Would be nice to know how to reprogram those to make em work right.
Edit: Another thing i noticed was some zones were not working correctly (xarc-s is walkable but the mobs for that area dont load and the weather in that area is also borked even tho the area is now in the live game)
Yeah, you can actually mod the SQL table to add exp TNL's above 76 to keep that from happening.
In regards to the spell Death, if you have downloaded the spell scripts via SVN, you will need to run "Death.sql" and then do @addspell 244. In the menu it will show up as Magic 244 but it will actually KO mobs when casted. I am looking into ways to allow other magic to work (Like Tier V). I have asked on the forums but from what I've been told, the spell level checks for pXI are controlled clientside and spells like Thundaga V and such are "turned off". I've tried modding the old spell .DAT listing table to make Thunder V level 75 BLM but it didn't work.
This has alot of potential.
someone before mentioned that if you added custom items into the game, you would have to include the .dats with your server files.. and this is true.
Again, using RO (or really any other Pserver) example:
When RO started new with private servers, it wasn't possible to create items, or really to even modify items. All we had access to were drop tables, exp tables, ect. Formulas and mathematics in the game could be altered, very little else. As they developed away from Aegies (into that Y one or whatever it was called. That didnt last long, it was soon usurped by eAthena, which is currently the premier RO P server software, and won a lawsuit against gravity), we gained alot of more power. Ability to create items from scratch including the models and ect took a very long time to come to fruition, but modifying ingame items were always a possibility.
In a sense, pXI has already progressed very far. Players already have the means to create models (opening the possibilities of all-new monsters, equipment, items, spells, everything in the game honestly) and only lacks the math to back it up. I highly doubt SE will -EVER- leak their source code to the public by mistake and we are, as such, forced to reverse engineer and trial and error every bit of math we can. Because pXI is a controlled situation, we can find out alot of things we couldn't otherwise.
Example being we could test nukes ingame on a monster and record a base amount of damage for every nuke when non resisted, and then go inside pXI to trial and error monster stats until the same numbers are perfectly replicated. This allows us to find out monster stats easily, albeit time consuming, and opens up possibilies for ALOT of other information to be found.
I will be honest and say that pXI will probably not be able to run a fully functional private server for another few years. Every peice of math needs to worked out, and that will take time.
however finding information like mob pop tables, loot tables, and all that good stuff will be easy. Once we have the formulas and math down, I will not be suprised to see people purchasing dedicated server boxes and setting up private FFXI servers en-mass similar to RO, WoW, ultima, ect.
also, someone said that private servers would not be fun, because it would be "playing with the cheats on". The thing is, different operators of servers will run their game differently. Another RO example.. there are hundreds of servers available, from 1000+ players to 20+ players. Every server has a basic setup with their tables. 1x exp, 1x loot, 1x money drop rates being the base Ragnarok Online tables, anywhere up to 100x 100x 100x, and anything inbetween.. FFXI would end up setting up similarly. some servers would have exp tables multiplied to 100x for exp, but only 2x for items, and 1000x for gil. Anywherei nbetween in possible. Also, i doubt normal players will have access to GM commands such as spawning monsters or altering their stats. It comes down to the server that you play on, whether or not it becomes an enjoyable experience, or a cheat-enabled run through of an MMORPG.
I dont know a lot about the project, but i'll assume players could script out entire scenes for their own personal videos with much more ease then currently in FFXI. The possibilities for hilarity are immense here.
Hmmm make the ability to have monster vs monster fights.
Yeah you can create your "own" items but it does take a lot of time. One thing I look forward too is when the project is near completion and the in game tools are taken out. Right now, those tools such as the ability to change jobs, level, gil, etc with simple commands is more of a development tool so you don't have to go in and modify the player table and then reboot the server to test things out. The thing I like most is the level of customization you can do. Last night I was playing around with weaponskills and you can control which weaponskills are learned at what level and by what jobs. Giving Swift Blade to BLU mage, and Mythic Weaponskills to jobs that normally don't have them really lets the server creator do things that normally weren't possible.
Also the ability to modify weapons as well means that you can make those Mythic Weapons actually mean something. Traits have yet to be encoded and aftermath as well but at some point I do see the possibility to modify the code so that Mythic Aftermath includes all 3 effects (Acc/Double Attack/Attack) at one time and the strength of the effect would be based on TP.
I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but where is pxi.ini? everything i open that has to deal with pXI is just the Black DOS screen.
I've tried and retried MySQL but it consistently fails to launch the service.
Odd.
I'm running Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 installed and everything is up to date.
I'm behind a router. I put my IP in the DMZ and forwarded port 3306. I've tried launching the service with/without Windows Firewall running. Nothing. No antivirus running during install either.
Just tossing it out there. I'll keep trying to find a solution. I'm interested in helping out with this project.
Try downloading WAMP (http://www.wampserver.com) which stands for Windows Apache/MySQL/PHP. WAMP makes it incredibly easy for anyone to turn their PC into a web/database server in 5 minutes.
You can turn off the Apache and PHP and just leave MySQL running, but I recommend leaving them all on so you can access phpMyAdmin and edit your database that way.
Hey I've been out of town for a few days, but I just wanted to say that if you have the expansions installed then you are good to go for expansion zones.
People who want world PvP, just edit all the spells in the db under allowedTargets, just set all to 127, then any spell can be cast on any NPC or PC. We only just recently added the check to disable attacking other players via engaging too, so I'm sure you could comment it out if you cared to.
in the future would u guys be able to play w/o havin a PoL account ?
I am not sure what everyones obsession over PvP is. The game wasn't really designed for PvP. Sure you could turn features on so that you can attack other players, but there is so much in the game currently that isn't balanced to where people can go around one shotting other characters with abilities (Chi Blast) and weaponskills. You would have to re-design or modify the damage code to add a pvp check and then reduce damage significantly.
