Much as I love arcade stuff(I own over 18 multi-cabs, 2 dedicated, and over 100 PCBs), for home-use Benami-type games are a really poor investment for home use.

First off, they cost too much, even the oldest DDR machines sell fot at least a grand, and anything within last 4-5 years is still gonna run 3-19k depending on exactly what you want.

It's important to remember when buying arcade hardware, that the actual hardware is cheap, and the cost is essentially in the license included in the purchase that allows you to legally sell play-time on it. Which is why most home-use is limited to games that have floored their revenue value and are sold entirely based on their hardware value.

If you don't intend to use said license, then you're essentially paying for nothing.

Second is that Benami-type cabinets, all have monsterous maintenance costs. Be prepared to spend several hundred dollars , several times a year just with moderate use. And if you don't know how to do your own maintenance, you're in for some hurt if you have to hire a repairman. These things are the height of poor engineering.

Ehhh... I have a Cobalt Flux, it's really different from the arcade, it worked really good for about 2-3 years, now it's a piece of shit and I can't even star 9's on it, but I can basically tristar 11's at the arcade -.-

If you're going for something closer to an arcade pad, get the Blueshark, I've heard a lot of good things about it.

    Edit:

    found this as well

I found that my cobalt flux was good for about a year, then I had to take the entire thing apart, clean it, and adjust the sensors. Works good as new.

I've done that before, I've had it for nearly 4 years now lol

Doesn't matter anymore though cause I stopped playing at home.

I did a lot of research about DDR pads / arcade cabs a while ago.

BlueSharks are universally considered the best pad, however they are no longer manufactured and it's extremely difficult to find one for sale. Cobalt Flux are generally considered to be the best (and actually possible to find) alternative, though they don't feel quite the same as the arcade. They sell a mod kit now that's supposed to improve that somewhat.

An arcade cab would definitely be extremely cool, but I really don't think I could justify dropping at least $3-4k on one, never mind the electricity and upkeep costs that would come later. An ITG2 dedicab is pretty much the ultimate thing to buy, but the prices on those range closer to $15k+ from what I've seen.

Something I did a bit of looking into that would be quite good, but a sizeable project, would be buying an older DDR cabinet that's in good working order, and replacing the guts with a PC running Stepmania. A ton of work, and I don't even know if there's any existing documentation about wiring up arcade pads as PC controllers, but you'd end up with something approximately equivalent to an ITG2 dedicab for a much lower monetary cost.
