Steam is okay, but i think it's likely they will once again come up with a proprietary content delivery and service handling program like POL.

Are we so sure we will be able to pick servers from the go this time though, just because they added the feature to FFXI? It's possible they will do the same thing as they did with FFXI and use auto balancing at first to distribute the populations evenly. I say this because i believe they have been having issues since the transfer system launched, i know that right now at least Bahamut and Odin are completely closed because they are full. I don't know how many users constitutes full, FFXIAH displays 13k+ for those servers, though obviously that includes all mules and i would guess there are between 3000-5000 active players online at any one time.

Still, that's gotta suck for people on those servers because they cannot create additional mules (or even a first mule if you have none yet) I read that SE was desperately looking into ways to solve this issue also - for this reason they may not allow choice and transfer off the bat in XIV. Of course without that you would still undoubtedly have the option of World Pass or something similar so it's not the end of the world.

It's in every single MMO pretty much at this point, I would think it's considered a "must have" feature.

Also, since so many will be migrating from FFXI, which SE clearly is aware of and is designing the game around, I think you can assume there will be some way to ensure you can play with your friends.

Yeah, assuming this transpired the World Pass would take care of that like it did in FFXI.

    Necro-bump.

It's getting closer, and I was going to post a thread about the same thing until I saw this one. I would love nothing more than to jump into another online FF MMO with some of the same people I've bullshitted with on these boards for years. Been playing TONS of Warhammer Online, so if there's any PVP to be had in this game, I'm in one of a handful of feared Destruction guilds on Gorfang. Leveled up a RR80 sorc, and will probably have a RR80 Chosen done by the time XIV rolls out (currently RR71.)

So yeah, the bottom line is I had 5+ years experience with FFXI (75BLM 75SAM 75MNK 75NIN 75DRK), and then tons of PVP experience in a game created almost exclusively *for* PVP (Warhammer Online.) Would also love it if some of my old LS members from Ifrit came out of the woodwork and joined together on this endeavor.

okay so you want to make a Linkshell "before" a game comes out?
at first i thought: pretty stupid.

at second i thought: could be something.

depending on server: count me in.

    Lol!

I think setting up Linkshells/Guilds/Llahkeshuttles before FFXIV even starts can be both a good and a bad thing. It's great if you can play together with people you've known for months/years and can work well with, which would allow you to work together and progress quicker through the game than, say, a group of people who just met in-game that day. This could also mean carrying over the LS Leadership into FFXIV, as well as inter-LS relations, which may or may not be a good thing depending on the quality of those respective leaders and relations. It also might prevent new-to-FFXIV players who have never played FFXI from being able to join some LSes or even EXP parties, regardless of their playing potential (who knows, they could prove to become better than the "best" players of FFXI).

All in all though, if you have a group of people you enjoy playing with then more power to you. I really hope we are able to choose which servers on which we play FFXIV early on the game, because I would love to be able to play with a few close friends I made during my time in FFXI. I am also highly looking forward to meeting, befriending, and playing with new people in FFXIV.

TL/DR: Joining FFXIV with your FFXI friends is a plus, but joining FFXIV with a Guild/LS already setup may not be the best idea.

I've got some friends that are already planning to get onto the same server. Hopefully there's at least another world pass system if server selection is out. And hopefully it doesn't cost much gil. I can imagine the group of us buying the game on day one and then having to wait for someone to make 10k.

Anyways, on topic, I think starting a linkshell prior to the game coming out, you want people who will be excited to help each other as much as possible, rather than race through content alone. Getting there fast is good, getting your entire shell there together, forming bonds and learning to work with one another, is better.
When I played DArk age of camelot, they created a PVP server and so many people moved over to it. Instead of just running a rampage we went as 2 groups and xp'd together as a guild. We all got to max level of 50 when most were still at 25-30. What was truly fun about that though was when 10-20 of level 30s would ambush us at high level zone entrances. They kicke dour asses sometimes lol... but ultimately yeah, working together helps IMMENSELY.

Pretty much, especially with all the people that would want to join it just to say they were in it. That being said, coordinating Linkshells/Guilds in advance of a game's release is a good idea, but I have to admit that I'm sitting here snickering about all the talk of "endgame" shells in a game that hasn't even entered it's primary Alpha or Beta testing.

Well then I hope posting this here is alright, if not let me know and it can be moved/removed.

I started promoting the a new guild yesterday afternoon on some of the various community sites. This is intended for folks looking to join a social/event oriented guild.

Individuals or groups are welcome of course so if this looks interesting to you talk it over with your friends and family.

    http://zerohour.mmoguildsites.com/

    -------------------------------------

Zero Hour is looking to build a prelaunch community in order to get to know some of its future members and to help build friendships prior to entering the world of Eorzea.

To tell you a bit more about our intentions, here's the blurb from our front page:

I feel that the below is a very good representation of what we're all about, so before hitting the Apply button, please read the below carefully to ensure that this is the right community for you. I'll keep this as short as possible.

Zero Hour is primarily a social based Final Fantasy XIV community, and as such the requirements for our members are simple: Be Fun, Be Friendly, and Be Helpful!

Don't be fooled though, because Zero Hour is not just a chat room. We will be holding occasional events to help accomplish the goals of our members, to help members of our community get to know each other better, and to give us an excuse to get everyone together and have some fun as a community.

In the months approaching the launch of the game we will be setting up a voice chat system which we would like to strongly encourage the use of especially toward the beginning of the game, in order to get everyone acquainted with one another, and to start building the bonds that are going to help this community strive.

Finally the last thing I will say is that if you're only going to be looking out for number one, and are only going to have your own best interest in mind everyday, hit the back button now because that's not the type of person we're looking for.

If you're an individual who is looking to make a lasting group of friends, while working toward your goals, and at the same time helping other members toward theirs, you're the type of person we're looking for, hit the Apply button now!
In addition to the above, I am currently looking for a few like minded individuals who would be interested in playing a bigger part in this community to become officers.

There will be no preferential treatment to officers, they will simply be individuals besides myself that are willing to donate their time for the good of the community and to assist in arranging events, planning games, and helping to resolve conflicts.

same. I do think it's a good idea to have pre-made shells, as it will give us an immediate group of people to do missions/quests/xp with, but that's it.

We will address endgame when we get to it...and I highly doubt any pre-arranged shell is going to survive and succeed in endgame...as too many scrubs will bandwagon.

Agreed, let us get off the boat in Limsa first so we can at least find a linkshell NPC.

However, I'm all for people trying to get some organization in shape for E (Eorzea)-day, and I'll drop in to ZeroHour when I can get to a computer where it isn't blocked....

this a bit off topic but it does matter in some respects as pvp tends to create pvp guilds, anyway

I'm sorry. It was fun for all of 3 weeks, then fun again when they did the tournament.

A lot of the time when you try to get a PvE game and try to add PvP later on, its either gonna be amazing or fail hard.
Ok so, I'm not going to say FFXI PVP is great, or even decently balanced. It's not. It's hilariously imbalanced for the most part.

But it's definitely fun as hell. I'd looooooove to play quarry matches whatever the hell you call it, the basic original ballista, in WoW. I'd love to see more creative sport-style pvp stuff.

But point being, I very much disagree that it's not fun. Hell, it may have even been *more* fun when it was more imbalanced.

I'll never forget some taru blm coming out into "that space you don't go into" between teams at the start of a match, predator clawsing him in the face for a 1 shot straight through ss right smack dab in the middle of both teams; and lol'ing for the entire rest of the match as me pulling an avatar out resulted in red team running every direction ASAP.

I had a lot of fun in ballista, the problem is, as with so many other things in FFXI, insufficient rewards. I'd love to ballista a few times a week, even for no reward. Unfortunately, like 3 other people agree with me, so it basically doesn't exist.

I hope they just give us the same server names as I would love to see familiar faces from my ffxi server into ffxiv .... Now starting a guild might be a bit hasty as we don't even have a game to play yet ... If we are talking about ffxiv we are still in ALPHA not anywhere close to a point in which the shells/guilds can even be made yet..... I guess we wait and see, I plan on being a long term player and already have about 10 people that will play with me at the launch of the game but to say we will be together all the way to Arey2.0 is laughable hahahahahahhahahaha e.body 2 here I come!!!!!

I've got a ls/guild/whatever for it. My FFXI ls is planning on exploring the new game together. We are more about the exploring than the race to endgame though. We've picked a name even. I guess we figure it was fun doing FFXI together, so FFXIV should be fun together too.
