Can someone please explain to me the differences between the two games comprehensively?
I have about 7 years experience with DDR, but I have never played ITG. I have a good deal of friends who prefer one or the other.

ITG is for those that want to play DDR without being called a weeabo (Techno songs as opposed to J-pop).
ITG definitely sets the bar much higher than DDR in terms of difficulty.
Pandemonium is a good example
Well, basically it's like this: DDR is preset with a bunch of shitty music, and stepcharts, the backgrounds blend with the arrows making higher speed mods impossible to read, the game has been altered WAY too much since EXTREME.
This was not always the case though, EXTREME was actually quality, then Konami decided to revive DDR because of ITG, or something, except they rushed the fuck out of it and made it suck balls.
In the Groove on the other hand, is incredibly customizable, you can make your own stepcharts to any song, and put it on a USB drive and play it, take screenshots, the step charts actually make sense, and are difficult at the same time.
There are also many many many different modifiers, some that make the game 100x more challenging, a good example would be Flip, or Split. (look them up on youtube if you don't know what it is)
Not only that, but since ITG is basically stepmania, you can hack it with a laptop, put your own themes on it, own speed mods, own songs, you can basically never run out of stuff to do.
If you're going to play DDR, atleast play EXTREME, don't waste your time with SN/SN2/LOLX.
DDR went to shit when they added more J-Pop. I could barely count 5 J-Pop songs pre-Supernova era. Eurobeat is not J-Pop for songs like God of Romance, Nori Nori Nori, and Hot Limit. DDR music was all about license music from the Dancemania series, not some shitty songs where the singers sound like they're being raped by tentacles. Post Extreme has gone to the shitburner sadly. Less good license by putting mainstream songs was pretty bad and not bringing back the old good licenses did not help (Boom Boom Dollar, Dub-I-Dub, Captain Jack, E-Rotic songs, basically any 1st Mix through Extreme licenses)
ITG actually had developers taking community suggestions and implementing them. Don't take my word but Konami made lolSupernova just to prove the court case the ITG was violating some copyright laws with DDR or something. Thats why Konami owns ITG now and does nothing with it. ITG3 would've been amazing so those custom songs on ITG2 through USB disk was Roxor's last gift before losing ITG.
Wow, I did ramble and vent a lot. Anyways, if you want a clear winner, play Pump It Up. 5 panel is much more engaging than 4 panel.
After playing ITG for a good amount of time.
Went to play DDR, and said..
What is this, I don't even..
Oh
Here's a pretty big difference in song wise.
Only from the top players in the world.
ITG

DDR (Same old shit)

A lot of tournaments are extreme onry.
This was from the same tournament btw, and from my favorite player evar, Kevin Boddy <3
DDR is good. ITG is fucking lol Kyle Ward fail.
ITG machines pressure pads only need you to lightly step on the pads. DDR pressure pads require you to stomp on it with all your power or else it wont register. ITG's pressure pads are a lot more friendlier to the extremists that DDR.
I always thought the mines in ITG are cool ;o
(I don't play either game but watching others play when I have a chance)
I'm not sure if post-Supernova added these, but I was always incredibly fond of the triple steps in ITG, when you had to bend over and use a hand. Just added a bit more style than flailing on a pad.
Wow
Vertex^2 was the biggest load of BS I had ever seen when ITG2 was released, until Pluto Relinquished. Although, some charts from Pump It Up ups the ante with the Nightmare steps.
ITG is better in every possible comparable way unless you count being Japanese as an advantage.
Playing DDR/ITG for upwards of 7 years I can say that DDR was good at the beginning as every time a new mix came out it gave everyone more songs, better options and was a lot of fun.
Since then DDR has fallen out with ITG coming in and stomping over its face.
The biggest problem with DDR was the challenge was not there when people started getting good, and I mean real good. When MAX300 and MaxxUnlimited were the hardest songs it left a lot of people wanting more and ITG picked up where it left off and then some with 5x more mods, a longer arrow stream with hallway setting and just better songs. Most people I know who tried DDR didn't play it because dancing to a J-Pop song isn't for them and that is what ITG tried to get rid of and it worked.
What I mean by the hallway also is that allowing more room on the screen to see the arrows coming allows for players to set higher speeds as you look farther down much like if your reading fast your 10 words ahead vs 5, its the same concept.
What I like is that ITG started with rankings and more precise grading with % over letter grades and allowed people to post their scores on a website so people could compete world wide and get better. Involving the online community with the game really help it take off...
Now some of those songs you seen above are hard but they are not insane, not when you have people passing songs like this...
Negative BPM is fun
Tsusurvivorgamush
A few others that are intense is Pandamonium, Delerium, Bloodrush, Blur, all on expert of course :D
If you like DDR you will LOVE ITG as it still has some Jpop but way more options, songs, mods, scores ect ect.
Its like going from a PS1 to a PS3 that still plays all the old games if you want :D
Also from playing so much and just being around the machines I can tell if someone is doing good or bad based on the sound of the footsteps heh
^^^ What he said and more.
I don't understand why people hate on either DDR or ITG, they are both dancing games >.>
Top favorite players evar,
1. MegamanX (Kevin Boddy)
2. Flash (Brett)
3. Calimist (JJ)
Yeah i'm a fan boy. they are amazing!

Determinator ( Long Version ) is honestly one of the pinnacle songs of In the Groove 2.
