    Tips on moving out.

Well I'm twenty years old and I've always lived off my parents. My bestfriend moved away to college today and we had planned on me moving down soon after. There's a few problems I'm concerned about.

First off I'll have to start school next semester which isn't really isn't a problem. I plan on moving as soon as possible and working a fulltime job until the new semester starts. I've never been able to get a job and I need a fulltime job. Hoping to net about 40hours a week. Where doesn't really matter, I plan to try out wal-mart down there and see if they take me in.

I'm curious about how much money I'll need to make to maintain an apartment with about 500$ rent. I'm going to assume that utilities will cost about 300$.

I guess some experienced advice as to what others have done will make give me a grip on what to expect and how to go about things.

THe apartment I plan on renting only has to have 1bedroom 1bathroom so it shouldn't cost too much. I looked around and most were about 450-550$

Good luck getting a full time job that will work around school hours in an area where there's a lot of other students.

Seriously, stay with your parents or get a roommate. It's expensive to live on your own and it's going to be hard as hell to juggle a 40+ work week while being a full time college student.

Edit: If you are serious about it I would suggest getting a job as a waiter. The hours may suck and it relies heavily on the generosity of others, but if you are good at it you can be taking in like 60+ a night in tips on top of you're normal paycheck.

It isn't like a stigma to stay with your parents longer (although sometimes some people may show it that way depending on race etc). Not to mention is cheaper/better food/more space/etc. I personally don't see anything wrong with staying until you're out of school and working in your field.

Edit: Assuming your parents aren't one of those "18/in college and you're out" type of people

Stay with your parents. I moved out of my parents house for a year before I could no longer make ends meet and had to move back in, that's an awkward conversation to have :S

Even if you have roommates, it'll get tough sometimes. With this economy trying to find a job that pays that high in a college town with that many hours, especially with no experience is going to be tough.

But I understand that you're young and think you can do anything and fuck older people who try and give you advice. That's what I thought, and that's what I'm sure most people thought when they first wanted to move out lol. If I could go back in time tough, I would have just never moved out. Could have saved lots of money, lots of time, and I would have had better grades my 2nd year because I wouldnt have been working 40 hours in a dead end job.

^ All of the above is truth. And if you do move out, do not do it before actually having a job.

Planned on working fulltime until the semester started. Then I'd lay off a bit. My rents will help me out too.

Planning on working, and actually being able to get a job (especially with no previous experience in todays economy) are two completely different things. My semester starts in 2 weeks, I am guessing you aren't talking about this one.

edit: Also, your employer, most likely is not going to be ok with you working full time when you want, then part time when you want. Typically it ends up with you being fired.

Honestly, I don't see the big deal in moving out if you're still going to school, unless you stay at a dorm or something :/

    1. You're not going to find a full-job unless you got connections...
    2. You mention Wal-Mart as a place to work......Yeah enjoy working min wage and shitty hours but you ain't getting 40 hours lol.
    3. You will find out how expensive is on living on your own....you have to deal with rent, utilities, transportation, food, etc
    4. Financial aid won't help you much on this so be smart and stay with your parents unless they will support you on moving out.

Do not apply for bridge cards, food stamps, welfare and unemployment either. Leave the burden on your parents, not everyone else.

Don't go to a dorm. Avoid dorms.

Nothing happens at them. If you're going to school to actually lollern, dorms will do nothing but hinder you. Even if you can avoid the partying, you'll be hard-pressed to get sleep, or concentrate in the slightest.

    ...And the places are disgusting.

Of course, if you don't have any other option (which you do, stick with your folks), they're okay, I guess.

General cost for a college student living on their own would kinda look like this

    $400-500/mo rent ( varies ofcourse )

    $50-150/mo ulilities ( depends on if u get tv/cable/internet )

    $50-100/mo on cell phone

$25/week on gas ( generally 1 tank of gas per week whatever that cost u, unless u walk to school )

any other free cash u have will go towards food and/or going out in general ( bars, clubs, restaurants ) Hit up them Friday Frat parties to get your weekly dose of alcohol.

    Gotta pull in maybe 400 every 2 weeks to make ends-meat ( thats about 20hrs/week @ $10/hr )

For job options, being a waiter is probably the best job. Alot of places will give u flexibility on your schedule and most of the money you make is thru tip. So working part-time can net you more than you get paid working full if u bust ur ass.

I wish 25$ got me to half a tank of gas! 400$ every 2 weeks, is 800$ a month, there's no way you could live on that with out splitting cost with roomates. Unless you don't eat, have lights or pretty much do anything.

If you're going to do it, you need to move in with at least 2 other people. You'll also learn real fast, your best friends are annoying as fuck when they're always there.

Splitting cost with as many roommates as u can stand living with is ur best bet to save money. Just set up some basic food rules or get ur own personal mini-fridge and ur golden.

Whaaa? I lived in dorms for two years at school (and a "boring everybody supposedly studies all the time" tech school at that), and it was an awesome experience. Made a few life-long friends (at least so far, haha) and generally had a lot of fun. If you're good with networking (the social kind, that is), dorms will also help you form study groups, find people with similar interests, and very likely result in higher grades.

I guess if you just hide in your room all day sulking about the noisy people in the hall, it could be a bad experience.
