The reason for the addition of quick teleports was that all the areas had been discovered in the later life of the game, or newer areas were simply rehashes of old areas (WoTG). A majority of these teleports added were in realization that players did not want to spend time going through areas again and again after they had essentially been discovered.

Now imagine in FFXIV if all the game had was a bunch of random ass teleports that took you to random places with essentially no explanation of where you just got sent to. It would not be a very fun game. Slow travel is essential for the discovery years of an MMO.
Agreed, if we have full access to things at the start it's a bit boring. I do think a mount relatively early is a nice thing, but being able to teleport everywhere at the start is a big no-no.

The crystal system will almost certainly be a (free or very cheap) way of getting from one city to another - not necessarily from any destination to another. Mounts, the way Final Fantasy can put them to work, are not necessarily outdated, either. Chocobos incorporate digging (which many people like and will probably be in the game), breeding (hopefully easier to train up a good one than in XI), and racing, not to mention anything else SE can think up for them to do besides pure transport. You also can't be attacked on a chocobo, an advantage over making the trip on foot.

Yes it's speculation based on no information atm besides the one chocobo in the trailer (proving they are at least in the game), but I'm willing to bet we'll see digging, breeding and racing again, preferably from the start this time so people don't have to fail to warm up to it and let it rot like XI's.......

Still crossing my fingers for another ownable animal, one that can fly?

I would love a flying mount in FFXIV later in the game. anyways back to what I was originally going to say. if they do chocobo breeding please let them have a way to skip the days you were gone... like if you forgot you had one you had to sit there and keep clicking X or enter. I don't know if they fixed that but please do lol

Man, I hope there's flying mounts too. I'm so used to that idea it slipped my mind. Hopefully they are planning from the start to have flying mounts, it'd be kind of silly not to considering almost all the competition has some form of faster travel such as flight.

I have always wanted Chocos to be pack mules with expandable inventory, care and feeding required. Wanted the option of armor that assists in battle on a battle Choco or craftable pack/digging armor with + stats like the current Chocobo gear characters wear.

-Battle chocos that are like pets/avatars who take and give damage or heal depending on what you raise them to do, similar to feeding and growth plans on current Chocos.

-Rider training and different equestrian type paths of learning/mounts.

The "new" concepts above, in addition to the current offered features would really be cool. I never liked the Choco races because of the separate cut scene thing and it stopped me dead in my tracks -no pun! Never got into racing after that but it looked fun prior to the cut scene but would eagerly try it in ff14 if it was real time.

I still look with envy, at customized Chocos when I see them in the field.

Seeing the robust-looking pack Chocobo in the main ff14 picture was really exciting and I look forward to it hopefully being option to players. I also enjoy digging and hope they keep it.

As for the airships, the totem pole ships, they look like incredible vehicles but I have no clue if they are npc type vessels.

SE: Aetheryite crystals allow you to instantly transport directly to where your going

FF Community: But I want to go faster, and fly

SE: I'm sorry, did you say you want another absolute virtue? or did you say you wanted to stfu!!!!

Don't mean to pick on you maguspk, but it just occured to me how silly all the flying mount talk kinda is lol

I don't see flying mounts being all that useful or needed. it adds another layer to the game but nothing to special besides sitting on a floating rock in a random zone lol

Honestly though one of the main draws of this game is going to be how 'pretty' it is. You don't get to show off much more than if you can see the terrain flying past beneath you complete with PCs and NPCs wandering about. Flying mounts would be nice not only because WoW has them, but also because it adds a new angle to the game (literally) as well as leisure time and pimptasticness (come on, who doesn't want to own their own flying creature?)

I'd rather a leisurely, on rails, airship, cable car, w/e tour if I were to get a sky view of Eorzea.
Do not need personal flying mounts. If you want to play WoW, go play WoW, not wish another game to be like WoW.

The only reason to be against flying mounts is because you are adamant about not sharing a similarity with WoW? That's asinine. Sure you can teleport apparently but in zones it'd be nice to be able to fly also. Not anytime before you're near max level of course, maybe you'd need to breed for a golden chocobo, or something or obtain a rare item from a high risk fight.

so just out of curiosity... is there any creatures at all in the FF series that people actually fly on? don't say chocobo because those are flightless birds, if they make them fly I'd be pissed lol

I think you are missing Cantih point, if you want to show off how pretty the game is do it in a set manor Via looking over the side of an airship. Its not just a WoW comment while it would be cool to have the freedom of mounts i.e WoW or wings i.e. Aion. They are very different games if you can't live with out either game mechanic and its not introduced to FFXIV then maybe it isnt for you.

    Agreed.

Final Fantasy has always been about Airships and it works and it's nice. That is what SE does I don't think they are about to introduce new creatures that players fly on.

No, I think you're missing the point, being able to fly only adds a new way to enjoy the game. Nobody said I couldn't live without it, nice attempt at a strawman. Your argument is still, 'wah, play WoW, I don't want to share a similarity with it.' When almost all games have some form of higher player controlled movement, it'd be silly not to think FFXIV won't have something besides airships and earthbound chocobo.

What other FF game ever had one? I have by no means played them all, but none of the ones I've played have had one. So, if they did include them they would be changing the FF dynamic to suit people who have played other games. Which is what FF fans want to avoid.

Not saying they wont do it, not saying they will, but from a FF view, there are more arguments against than for the change.

Asside from it effectively shrinking the game world to almost nothing and making the intervening space between endgame activities completely unnecessary and therefore making it a far less immersive experience, and not being able to recall a single time a character flew on an animal in FF:Tactics... i have no further argument for or against.
