[FFXI] FFXI/PS2 Tech Problem

I'm having problems starting today with my PS2 "blacking out" during mission cutscenes. The first incidence was during the cutscene for WOTG at the concert given by the Troupe in South Sandy(S)'s tavern. My screen would cut blank/black and the audio would stop too and I had to turn off my PS2 and turn it back on. I tried to make it through the CS 3 times and all 3 times it "blacked out." It then later happened again on my alternate character during the COP M1-2 CS in Upper Jeuno once, but when I rebooted my PS2 and tried again, I made it through the CS on the first retry.

Has anyone encountered this? Is there something I can do to fix this? HDDs are pretty rare, so Im hoping its not getting corrupted.

yea change systems PC made a huge difference for me

Sounds like corruption. I am always amazed at people that have original PS2s that lasted long enough to get WotG installed! Mine died right after CoP was released. Had no choice but to switch to 360 when ToAU came out. But PC > all.

my ps2 lasted for 3 years playing ffxi xi lol then it finally died then i baught a pc for like 200 bucks run ffxi like a champ plus love plasticsurgeon

could be your hardrive but at the same time could be the game itself. first is it blacking out near the end when its getting ready to take you out of the cs and back into the game? i had a similar issue with toah. in the cs where you get to see Luzaf on his ship looking at the odin alexander pic its suppose to end after that and put me back in game. however once it went black after that cs it would stay black and the audio would stop playing also. had a friend call a gm about it cause everytime i would log back in i would be stuck in the cs. Gm got me out and the following week SE posted in the news updates that it was fixed for ps2 owners. i play the ps2 version on ps3 and thought maybe was a emulation problem turns out it wasnt.

I ran file-check on Playonline for both the Playonline and FFXI files and neither turned up any corrupted files. My friend reported similar issues with the same CS on his PS2 in South Sandy (S) for WOTG, and has occasionally had a blackout but not near the frequency I've had this week. Since my original post, I also blacked out once more during a laggy moment of Campaign Battle where there were a lot of mobs/people, but that doesn't surprise me, as Besieged often makes me blackout, too (about 1 out of every 4 Besiegedes I black out).

Try reformatting the HDD. I too am I a PS2 player (had this PS2 since day one, have had the laser replaced a few times, had the HDD since day one) and I had that problem like.. twice? I had to end up reformatting the HDD (save your macros to the server, dear god). The process is kinda long and tedious , then the install and then the updates. Beats having to search for a hd. You need the original disk that came with the HDD to format it , though. I think if you can't find yours you can find one on ebay.
