My linkshell must be awesome then. We've three people levelling bard atm, all in their mid-60s, and all have taken the time to get their crown. Some people were like "why bother? you're a bard, you can level naked" but they responded with versions of "no, if I'm levelling, I'm levelling properly and not gimp". I don't use it anymore either, but until you get relic hat, it's pretty awesome.
Also, this. Getting that extra duration on your songs is well worth it, never mind the bonuses they give to songs themselves. Makes me so angry when I see bards using nq cornettes when a hq is so cheap and will last you until you get G-horn.Not having HQ instruments is dumb (Stick with the +1s, +2s are waste of gil) solely because it makes your spells worth more.
And no, you can't cancel rolls like you can most buffs.
Uh, the only use of manteel is to replace yigit when you start casting a song, it won't save any inventory space. Your casting will always end with a body that has more chr/skill/haste than it.
It's really just 4M and 2% vs spamming Saving Private Ryaff or Building Bridges for 18 days.
Also i got stuck at 65 to try and quest the stupid crown, which i used maybe once before i got to 73 (damn level sync) and switched to Demon Helm +1. I wish i hadn't bothered.

That is a lot of work for 30hp and 30mp. It makes me sad when people waste their time getting a crown...
Oh, and if tacos are too expensive:

There is so little reason to waste time/effort on an opo crown...I definitely never bothered with one, and my bard was definitely not gimp when I lvled it.
I used a Trump Crown until Demon Helm/Walahra Turban. In terms of effort:reward, Opo-Opo Crown is pretty fucked up.
I got a tip don't level bard. You will thank me when your linkshell asks you to come as bard to every event.
The vast majority of manteel bards, don't bother swapping gear. They -might-, a very big might, switch to minstrel's coat, but most of them prolly don't have a refresh body to idle in or a chr body to do anything with. It's really the fact it can be used for multiple purposes aside from simply the song casting time that people buy itnot to mention the dudes that play chicks and wanna look as whorey as possible
Tav. Tacos offer 25% Defense with a cap of 150@600 Defense.
Unless you wear Phalanx Rings, go /WAR with Defender, and have Soul Voice'd 2x Minne (or somethig similarly preposterous) on I have no idea how a Bard would have anywhere near 600 defense pre-food.
Try Nebimonite Bakes (easy to make yourself) or Fishkabobs (always on the AH) both are about 25% the cost of Tav. Tacos. Tacos are serious overkill and too expensive.
Pretty sure they reason Tav. Tacos over those other def foods is because Tav Tacos provide CHR+4 whereas those other two do not provide any CHR+
There really are no mp on those, and I reach 400-ish in def prior to food on BRD idle/ohshit gear. Sure they are cheaper, but still not a complete package like tacos are IMHO.
This to summarize what I mean with a complete package. (hp/mp/def/CHR)
I was going for 4 cha foods, because 4 cha foods + lvl 14 3 cha hat = same cha as opoopo with food...
Opo Crown is a fucking awful item that for some reason a bunch of idiots convinced bards to go get. Maybe it had it's place 5 years ago, it definitely hasn't had a place in the past 3 years though.
I'm reasonably certain tacos weren't around when I was leveling BRD, but I could be mistaken. I started at PS2 release, and it was my first job to 75. I think the only things BRDs ever talked about eating when I was leveling were MP pies and Flint Caviar. I didn't go past certain levels without certain gear I wanted, but leveling was very different then. Half of my Maat's Cap jobs (to 66) have had gear I've bought but never used, because I never ended up actually exping in those level ranges (and it all went by so quickly).
I would have done the quest anyway; I've done most of the quests in the game. If you're not like that, though, it sure doesn't seem necessary to get it now. Personally, after I retired the crown, I went straight from Demon Helm to Marduk; relic BRD hat really doesn't like to drop for us.
This is such a catch-22 mindset that it isn't funny.
Almost every event in the game needs a bard (or more). Since people think with this mindset, the people who DO level bard are forced to come as it all the time, when if the majority didn't think this way, then the bard duties could be rotated far more evenly and let everyone come as jobs they like more often.
If you level bard and have to come it 100% of the time, that means either your leader/job organizer is horribly biased, or you never had a bard in your linkshell to begin with, which doesn't bode well at all for your linkshell.
