Main reason I found for many is due to the difficulty of keeping a relationship if you're hiding your sexuality from parents/relatives while you're still living with them.

But since a lot of people don't want to dread the thought of their parents potentially kicking them out, they suck it up and pretend to love what the media says is right.

Your family should be able to accept you the way you are. If they are upset that you're yourself then they arn't much a family.
And obviously because its much easier to be open than to constantly live a lie. I'm not gay but I don't see why it's hard to understand why someone would want to come out to their family members.

Coming out is a wonderful weeding out process of people in your life - you get to find out which people actually matter and you find out who you don't have to give a shit about anymore.

Plenty of things people do are selfish - it's not like you're coming out for the betterment of other people or to put their minds at ease - you're coming out to feel more comfortable yourself.

I love how I can get into an argument where I start off by saying "there's nothing wrong with it" and argue with someone who also thinks "there's nothing wrong with it".

I don't drink or smoke and I honestly have a severe moral issue with it and it offends me on some small level when people offer me it but I deal with it and refuse politely because I know that not everyone sees the world as I do.

I don't introduce myself as, "Hi, I'm Ed and I don't do xxx." If asked about it I have no problem but I honestly never got the issue about making a big stink about "coming out" regarding homosexuality or really anything else. Everyone is different. There is nothing remotely wrong with being gay, obviously, so why should you have to answer the question to anyone unless you want to?

Don't need to live a lie but if you think telling somebody will hurt them you don't have any greater right to hurt somebody who cares about you because they may be ignorant or whatever. I admit I can't relate because I am not gay but somebody very, very close to me is and the only reason anyone knows is because it's really hard to have girl-on-girl sex unless the other girls know you're into it <_<

Forcing someone to accept you when you know they won't is silly - exactly as silly as expecting everyone to accept everyone equally just because you want them to. Racism and bigotry exists everywhere, hell, I hate loud and obnoxious people of any race, religion, or culture and I won't avoid telling somebody they're being an asshat just because they're black, white, or fucking orange. Long story short I get called racist for being intolerant of people pissing me off.

So I'll say it again: forcing people to accept you is as silly as the racism and bigotry you may find evil. Everyone has their own ideas and ultimately, we're all wrong to someone.
