You are still pretty young, but I am assuming this will be your last year in school before university? If so, you might want to wait till your financially secure or in uni and then break the news. That would be if you are afraid of something drastic happening. Plan ahead though - Think of a place you can go if shit hits the fan; have a backup plan for the worst case scenario. At the same time, take comfort in knowing that once its done, you won't have to do it again too.

Everyone's family is crazy - But at the same time, as I mentioned earlier, they are just people. If they can't accept you for who you are, then you need to find some some friends and make a new 'family'. You still have a lot ahead of you.

If you've got a fair idea of how your family is going to react (and you're pretty sure it's going to be negatively) then why bother? Coming out to my mum when I was 16 was a really bad move because it wasn't until afterwards that I found out she's actually homophobic, and literally the only time she ever speaks about it is when she wants to use it as a weapon against me. For example, once when my brother was being a retard I told him to "fuck off, you gay" (a term of derision commonly used where I live) and she immediately piped up with "well, isn't that the pot calling the kettle black!". Note this was about a year after I'd first told her, during which time it hadn't been brought up again even once.

Honestly, I think it was a key point in the deterioration of our relationship. She simply doesn't know anything about me any more, due to both apparent lack of interest in my personal life and the fact that I don't offer any information in the first place. She doesn't know who any of my friends are, or where I go with them at the weekend, or that I've had three relationships in the past two years. As for my dad, well, he knows even less about me than she does, and I can't imagine myself ever telling him. He's a lot more level-headed and I'm certain he'd be very accepting, but what's the point when he doesn't know anything about me anyway?

I'm not really sure why I just wrote an LJ post, but I'm sure there's some sort of advice to be found in there if you look hard enough.
