FFXI has created a system where players seeking to optimize are carrying around 3-4 pieces of gear per slot to cast 3-4 spells throughout the duration of a 20 minute to 3 hour event.

I think people are just forgiving gear swapping right now because Windower+spellcast makes it trivial. Imagine trying to accomplish the same in a game where such addons don't exist.
Didn't they say they would have a way to change whole sets of gear quickly? I suppose micro swaps will still be there (light staff > dark staff etc), but I think changing to another job will basically be a quick thing.

As for the stuff in this topic...

Jumping: Hell no, people are retarded and look stupid. Don't give them even more of an excuse. Most of the terrain issues can be solved with some decent design, but like someone already said, 1 ft becomes 6 ft. If they want an area to be one way, it'll be one way regardless of jumping, if they want access both ways, you'll have access both ways. There's little reason to have jumping if the areas are designed smartly.

If there was jumping in XI, some areas would certainly be less annoying, but only if the areas stayed exactly the same. If they do include jumping, I hope they make it more of a low horizontal jump than a high vertical one. And I hope they only allow jumping when disengaged.

    Instances: Don't really care.

PVP/PVE: Why can't you have both on a single server? Some areas and situations where you can PVP, but I find MMOs with worldwide PVP systems to be intimidating and annoying.

World Servers: For sure, you meet a lot of good people and a lot of assholes, but it's interesting either way.

Yeah thats what I meant. My WHMs/RDMs used to hate me for that, I would be blinking constantly on PLD/NIN or any of my melee jobs. In some bizarre cases I wouldn't even see my character for a good 15 secs from all the Meditate > Swap > WS > Swap > Swap > WS.

Imagine a case where your main heal gets nailed during a fight with a VPNM (vacuum-packed notorious monster.) The remaining fighters adjust roles to stabilize what is now a low-man fight until the main healer can return, maybe as a DD because the replacement main healer is doing OK.

There will be gear swaps. There may not be an intent to have the multifaceted changes to combat attributes that people use in endgame, but I'm going to guess that something along those lines will be in use within the first 12 moths of the game being released.
I don't like the thought of someone being able to change jobs completely on the fly mid combat. I hope SE implements this very carefully and that there are restrictions as to how its going to work. Its one things to have to physically go back to town to your mog house and change jobs but being able literally change right while you're fighting an HNM? I think SE is going to have to limit the the skills we can master. In FFXI we didnt run into problems like this because while yes you could lvl up all 20 jobs, but you were usually carrying gear for one job on you and it takes a bit of time to warp -> change jobs -> gear up -> and head back out.

At the very least, there might be a cool down timer for swapping jobs, but who knows? The rough description of gameplay makes it sound like it's a quick change.

It really just seems like there's no point to that game even being online most the time. Aside from the few and far between group quests and instances, entire game could be offline. Everyone can complain about the HNM system... but most of you still spent the last 7 years in Aery anyway. At least there was actual rare equipment in XI. Also, I hated that how 3 (slight exaggeration) months after every new instance was released... everybody already had all the new gear. It wasn't even a challenge most of the time. This turned into a much larger rant than i expected so I'll just cut it off there >.>

    World Servers: Hell yeah

Having a huge time sink tho like an HNM that has a retarded window is not the way to go. Its not like the gear was rare because the HNM was very difficult, it was rare because of the respawn time and competition was heavy. Most people play video games for entertainment. Its not fun to be working while playing your video game. Is it fun to literally stare at the screen not doing ANYTHING for multiple hours waiting for a chance to fight a monster that has good gear?

    1. Jumping isn't really necessary, don't care if it is added or not. As others have said, it really just seems to be more of something people do when they have ADD and jump all over randomly, in WoW anyways. =/

    2. I, personally, do not like PVP, and could definitely live without it, but, since I am not everyone, some sort of instanced PVP would be okay. I do not want world PVP though. Unless, they add world PVP type servers.

    3. Smaller instances would be fine, which I think they are adding from the start anyways. It is nice to have something to do with friends besides mindless grinding every once in a while.

    4. More raid content.....maybe. If they add too much, the game would just end up being too much of a time sink for people that do actually have work/school. I can't even imagine them adding world raid bosses ever again, such a horrible system.

    5. If they do have some sort of major PVP, I would definitely like it to be on a server that I am not on. So, sure, separate PVP from PVE servers.

    6. I don't really care. If they add a better auto translating function, it would be nice though. The original one was fine, but somewhat limited.

Unrelated to the questions, but if they do have the gearswapping from FFXI, they better not make the characters "flash" still as someone else mentioned. Trying to heal people that gear swap everytime they do any action is somewhat annoying.

I agree. I hope the address the former without necessarily adding the latter. It's not that I don't like jumping because I wouldn't mind being able to jump... it's other people jumping around like retards constantly that gets on my nerves. Since you can't have jumping without retards jumping around constantly I'd rather just not see it.

As long as there is still rare gear, i don't care how they do it I guess. I just remember being a noob everytime I saw some dude with some super hard to get rare piece of gear and being in awe. I never once had that feeling in WoW... cause it was so freakin easy to get.

I still had that aw factor in WoW for a little while, then it quickly faded and I mean quickly lol.

Indeed. It was way too easy getting T5-6 shit in BC and its even easier now to get T7.5+ in WoTLK. Last time I played, I decked out my Hunter after like 3-4 raids.

PVP! Found FFXI's PVP system to be quit successfull minus the low popularity regarding the normal schedule.

Personaly think there should be a better voluntary PVP system in places wihtout the restriction of a set few areas. Would be fun to have a small public part of a city for PVP that would stop when one of two players reaches 1 hp.

    *snip*
I think one thing I would like to see, since this game seems to be concentrating on weapons and armor in their importance, is to instead of completely changing your armor when they add something, is to have the option to upgrade some of your existing armor or something (kind of like +1 gear in FFXI, except actually useful.)

Things eventually need to be upgraded, wearing Shura on my Monk for almost 5 years in FFXI was pretty rediculous, but at the same time, wearing a gear set for 3 months and already replacing it in WoW is pretty frustrating in itself. I would like to see something where you could have a choice, like you could get a new set of armor from doing a new mission, maybe something you could use on the side or learn a new ability, but if you don't want or need the item, maybe give you a choice of upgrading a piece or several pieces of your armor instead. Maybe increase the rate you get AP from it, increase the stats, make it more durable, if they go with item swapping and put a timer on it, make it so you can put it on or take it off faster, something along those lines. It seems like Armor and Weapons will be important, so why instead of going the WoW route and constantly replacing it, why not upgrade it?

Say a new mission comes out and you have a badass body armor and the reward is a nice sidegrade but you don't want to replace your current one, and the new one has like haste +5% on it, I think it would be cool to blow up the new armor piece for a item that gives your current one like Haste +2% or something to compensate for it, and the new item not being completely useless to you now.

EDIT: When I think about jumping in FFXI, I instantly think about those fucking fences in Rolanberry Fields that you have to completely run around, ugh.

Not gonna lie.. if there was jumping in FF14 I would jump around constantly if I was bored in town.

I seriously doubt it'll be an instant, mid-fight type switch. I can already see people exploiting that kind of system by fighting a high "level" monster with their best job and just switching to a low "level" job immediatly before the finishing blow netting massive "experience points".

Well, FFXI already has a counter for that by limiting EXP gotten from monsters much higher than you. Chaining them together though is something else - still, EXP limits fixes that problem I'd say.

It sounds like they are building gear swapping into the UI, which should hopefully move it out of macros and into a streamlined, easy to use interface, where you just press a button or 1 click and it's fairly easy to do.

I also hope they of course keep auto-translate in, I think everyone can agree it is a huge part of the FF online culture. Hand-in-hand with that, I liked playing with people from US, EU, and JP, it has been pretty much my only exposure at such a continuous basis to other cultures and I really appreciate FFXI for that.

-Jumping: Yes, definitely. Non-spammable jumping and swimming, anything that makes the world seem more fluid and less restrictive. Some restrictions are obviously necessary, but those can still be implemented just fine.
-PVP: As an important part of the game, no thanks. PvP can be fun, but SE has had enough trouble trying to balance classes around just PvE, trying to throw PvP balance in the mix too could complicate things horribly.
-Instancing right off the bat: Yes.
-More raid content: If we're comparing current FFXI, I'd say there is plenty of endgame/raid content.
-Servers of PVP, PVE: If they actually added world PvP, yes.
-Servers from all over the world: Kind of irrelevant to me.

Jumping Enjoy it a lot in other MMOs (Aion, WoW) It's one of those things you get accustomed to, and eventually don't even realize that you're hitting that space bar all the time

PvP I'm indifferent. I enjoy it in other MMOs, but if there's not a lot of PvP, if any, in FFXIV, I won't be disappointed.

Instances right off the bat From previous MMO experiences, it's been more beneficial to avoid instances for those early levels. Group quests, sure. Those are always fun, but low level instances pre-lv.20 are usually just more stress than anything else.

More raid content Depends how end-game is set up really

PvP/PvE servers I don't really see how they could do a PvP server in FFXI without warring factions.
