Why are you your religion/an atheist?

EDIT: This is not a belief vs belief debate or an argument thread at all. So don't say what you believe, say how you came to believe in it.

Regardless of what your belief is, why do you have it? Because you were raised that way? Your own personal experiences led you to that conclusion? To seem trendy or edgy? Weighing pros and cons and choosing the one you like best? Or was it not a choice at all, and to you it simply is what it is?

This applies to religious beliefs as well as atheism, but not so much to agnostics because they don't really know what to think.

Just a summation of what I've seen and what I've felt so far for me. Doubt there's a god and won't ever know.

I wouldn't say agnostic doesn't really know what to think, I think agnostics are just comfortable enough with admitting they don't know. Everything else is 100% bona fide sure they are correct.

Personally ( and obviously with bias ), I feel that agnostics are the most honest about the situation and comfortable with themselves and their mortality.

I grew up in a Christian/Jewish house. We celebrated Christmas and Hanukkah. Later my family became Catholic, and we went to church every sunday. When I graduated High School, I moved out, and stopped going to church. Sometimes I take my family to meet my parent at church for Holidays. I dont practice any of the rules or laws(lent) that Catholics do.

I grew up in a Jewish household, and while neither side of my family, including grandparents, weren't very religious, we still had Jewish traditions, and celebrated the High Holy Days. Further past my grandparents on both sides, my family was very religious. I think part of the reason religion declined in my family is due to he Holocaust. My Great-Grandmother on my mother's side was a survivor of it, I think she was in Auschwicz.

Aside from the above stated, I did have a Bar Mitzvah like my father and uncle before me, however, none of the women in my extended family have been Bat Mitzvahed. The exceptions to this are my cousin and my aunt, who was Catholic, but converted to Judaism and was Bat Mitzvahed (she felt Judaism was far more correct than Catholicism).

As time went on, instead of blindly following the beliefs, I have come to my own conclusions that I don't really have a fucking clue. With the way my mind works, I can't quite wrap my head around the thought that there is simply nothing. However, I really have no idea if there is or isn't, and if there IS, then who is right?

I chose Agnostic btw.

More important question. Why do you care if / what religion people are ? Honestly, being religious is something private why do you feel it necessary to ask very personal questions to people you do not know ?

The internet provides a veil of anonymity. How is he being personal? If someone doesn't want to answer, they won't. They don't even need to click on the thread. For those who do, they are welcome to vote and contribute.

I'm not going to deny the anonymous part of answering a religious question, but why even bother. No one cares that much if or what religion you are. It should not matter to anyone but you.

Most of my family is Jewish by heritage however none of my family practices. I grew up in a household where no organized religion was followed but you were not ridiculed for believing in a higher power. My grandmother and my aunt are both devout Buddhists and have made several trips to Tibet as well as held retreats at their houses.

I grew up believing that individual beliefs are to be cherished and everyone is allowed to believe what they want on an individual basis. However I was also taught that organized religions have a tendency to corrupt the individuals ability to be individual.

Long story short I picked agnostic because I don't presume to know anything either way. And I think both sides of the camp are arrogant for telling the other side they are wrong.
