I wouldn't mind a ballista event if they added it, but as of now i don't think that would be a very good idea. Last thing we need is a bunch of WoWtards QQing on forums about class balance.
Yeah ballista was fun to go and do every once and a while but id much rather SE spend time doing PvE develoment. This is only my opinion as there are a LOT of people who would argue in the other direction.
XIV needs Ballista so that when noobs get pissed off they can rant at you and challenge you to a meaningless PvP match out of sheer nerd rage.
It just won't be the same without!
Im glad 14 is supposed to be heavily solo oriented, this is one factor thats making me want to play old republic and was my favorite part about wow, I could log in for a couple hours, get dailies done, xp an alt and didnt need an alliance to do something fun.
has beta started yet?
is this clip real?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmFGuW9bcS0
The video looks a lot like the previous game play videos that have gotten out. I'm calling fake.
Hoping its fake too since I'm really hoping to get into the beta.
If someone really wanted to prove their in the beta... they would show us an area we haven't seen before.
Or at least someone casting a magic spell.
his/her other video

had hopes at first, but its fake
Full of shit. People and their stupidity amaze me.
Of course it's fake lol, look at the date it was uploaded. They wouldn't choose testers that fast.
Hope chocobo raising/racing isn't as tard in XIV as it is in XI
As far as Chocobo raising goes, I'm afraid they'll just skip it. Getting it right is another one of those things that might take more effort than they're willing to invest. I think the devs made a small note about it, but I can't remember where it was or what it said. Hmm...
Anyway, the only thing FFXI did well was interaction, and even that could be improved. Actually having it walk around with you instead of a menu initiated cut-scene would be a major plus. Still, the basic concept of personally monitoring, training, and feeding your feathered sprog was the strongest part of chocobo raising. Nearly every other MMO has you simply obtain a mount and use it as a glorified speed buff. Granted, that's the entire point, but a tamagochi that grows into something useful is like winning a cocaine snorting contest with the grand prize being money to buy more cocaine...or like raising a child, I guess...
If they want to get it right, they need to make the tempo at which you deal with your developing bird something like "whenever you log in" instead of "once every earth-day or else your shit will never grow up to be worthwhile."
Samurai class.
Capping out on interaction for a day was probably the most annoying part of chocobo raising. It all boiled down to a bland set of formulas that had to be adhered to for the desired results. You don't generally feel any maternal feelings towards an Excel spreadsheet.
Should be easy to make basic interaction simply taking your choco from the local stable and walking around with it. Gotta go to the AH or hit the repair shop before you head out of town? Ricky Martin is right at your heel, none of that CS-only crap. Simple, free-form stuff like that would be better than a set of push-button events.
One of the more interesting little things that SE did nothing with whatsoever was the potential of titles having an effect other than e-penis. Babban's Traveling Companion, for example.
I personally think titles affecting your stats is stupid. 48 assassin.
If there are stats on titles, it takes all the fun from titles, because everyone uses the best one for a given class.
I'd rather be a Taru Murder Suspect than Fast, Exact and Reliable as everyone else.
/edit: Oh, checked for "Babban's Traveling Companion". Using a title as quest trigger seems to be fine, just don't attach stats to them.
I never said anything about stats. Babban's Traveling Companion simply made a very specific mob type apply regen to you. I understand adding straight up attributes would obviously create a niche for the best title to have with any given job, regardless of the situation.
Having titles that affect specific mob types' behavior towards you is another thing. Babban's Traveling Companion isn' t a quest trigger. You receive it from a quest, like many other titles and having it active triggers Lycopodiums to give you Regen if you have their attention. It makes sense as it is a form of proof that you helped their hero Babban Ny Mheillea on her historic journey.
For example, I was thinking more along the lines of titles effects being as such:
Shining Scale Rifler = Mamool Ja are non-aggressive towards you.
Gorgonstone Sunderer = Merrow/Lamiae are non-aggressive towards you.
Troll Subjugator = Trolls are non-aggressive towards you.
Breaker of the Chains = Grants a Luminian Killer effect.
Lifter of Shadows = Dark weather grants Regen and double dark weather grants Regen + Refresh.
Honorary Doctorate, Majoring in Tonberries = Everyone's Grudge/Rancor calculation adjusted to be weaker.
Talks with Tonberries = Throat Stab only brings you down to 50% HP.
Goblin in Disguise = Goblin/Moblin TP moves backfire more often.
Treasure-house Ransacker = Hydro Shot does not reset enmity.
Friend of the Opo-opos = Magic Fruit sometimes targets you.
King of the Opo-opos = Increased charm success/duration vs. Opo-opos.
Paragon of ___ Excellence = Reduces that job's 2hr recast by 20 minutes. (hallo SMN burn)
blah blah etc.
I am just talking about random little mechanics here and there. Not 'Nidhogg Slayer' = STR+25. I am talking about conceptually instilling fear in certain monsters/enemies by essentially wearing proof that you've slain a general of theirs, or perhaps becoming one of them by sympathizing with them via a quest, earning you some of their benefits or less wrath when aggrovated. Shit, do a Dhalmel-saving-story quest and the title makes Whistle and Healing Breeze affect you as well.
I would only consider it if it's stuff you can easily neglect if you honestly don't care and just want your silly Total Loser title. However, it's also stuff you can go out of your way to get if you really need that edge on a certain family/mob/area/event/etc.
It's a decent idea, but changing title was a pain in the ass in XI, having to travel to certain towns just to change. If you could change it from a list in your menu that would be good. It would give people a reason to do certain quests or kill certain NMs that have been deemed worthless due to the rewards/drops.
