If you drove to the NY, NY area for one day.

I'm going to drive to NJ to pick my desk up and looking to spend the night somewhere, then go to NY,NY the next day. If you were to drive into NY and do something for a day what would it be?

Its a 3 day thing, day 1, drive to NJ and pick my desk up, spend the night somewhere (trying to decide NJ, or outside of NY somewhere, drive into NY or transit into NY, pull a Griswold and bob my head in front of something important, transit out, spend the night again, then drive home the next day.

I usually drive into big cities and just find a parking garage and walk around everywhere. I do that at Chicago on a monthly basis now. I've been to most major cities now from LA to DC, but I've always had friends/family to show me where I needed to go and what I needed to do. I've got no one in NY anymore.

I'm thinking ground zero, times square, somewhere decent to eat that is a must from NY. I really am not interested in the Statue of Liberty, I'm sure Ill see it from wherever but am expecting that to be an all day thing, and probably expensive. I'll want to stick to the downtown area.

Any thoughts.

You absolutely must do three things:

1) Go to Central Park, Times Square, Broadway, and Grand Central.
2) Have a Brooklyn-style Pizza.
3) Take the Subway.

Anything else you decide to do is up to you... but if you do nothing else, do those.

Also, please watch out when crossing the road. Cabbies don't give a shit if the light is red or green, they will run your ass over... and for the love of God... don't eat a hot dog from the Sabrett vendors (although for the full experience, you should do that at least once).

Oh yea, and if the Yankees are playing, you better go watch them.

Ground zero is going under major construction right now, you can't even enter it.

Do yourself a favor though and don't waste the day at empire state, the view from the GE building is much better IMO.

Midtown Manhattan is a lot bustlier than downtown. The finance district is just that, mostly businesses. As far as stuff to do, midtown and east side/west side is where everything is to do.

I'm doing the same thing this weekend. I'm staying in Times Square, so I got that covered. I'll probably check out Ground zero, Statue of Liberty, and I'm not sure what to do after that.
