Well, crowd control is kind of worthless when sleep only lasts 10 seconds and 99% of players are too fucking stupid to look at the mobs' status effects before they durhurrr press buttons and break it all anyway. Try explaining that trap of slowing last 90 sec if the fucking morons would stop attacking!

See this i really don't understand, I was in a group last night that was templar, sin, cleric, sorc sorc sm and were doing pussy single pulls for the entire time; even circling farther around shit to leash NORMAL MOBS. Last time I was in KHQ we pulled 2-3 elites at a time and just cc'd/burned them down.

I swear grouping with people feels like FFXI "Pull mob to camp > Kill > Repeat" shit instead of "I'm a fucking man, roam around and kill everything that moves."

My templar friend is concerned because he has very few ways to close and kill someone, especially in the air. Is this an issue solved by gear in later levels (he's in his late 30s) or other abilities?

Unrelated question -- Chanters post 42. I know without DPS meters it's difficult to know exactly who's doing what in PvE, but are Chanters considered capable of filling a DPS role in PvE post 42? Obviously assuming time and effort was taken to gear/spec correctly. I'm mostly considering a Gladiator versus Chanter (both 2H users which I like, with Gladiator able to tank in a pinch for group invites, and Chanter obviously a great buffer).

Let me be clear on the Chanter question -- I'm mostly concerned with the issue of what role they're playing. If a Chanter is invited to PvE groups as a backup healer only / buffer, I'm less interested than a Shaman or Melee Bard (but with hopefully better DPS heh). I'm more than happy to heal in a pinch when necessary, but if their DPS is 50% of a pure, I'm less interested than if they are 75%.

Thanks for any advice you may have.

Don't go into chanter if you want DPS; even DPS-stigma spec doesn't match a glad or a sin. Between the two, if you want to be mostly DPS with some pinch assist ability, go gladiator.

I get a lot of invites on chanter for everything PVE. It's an important job for enhancing the party, back up heal, and yes, DPS. In almost every Dark Poeta or Upper Fort run I do I'm always engaged, dealing damage, and my gear is set up for that. More often than not I'm dealing damage along with the other DDs in the party. I don't do as much damage, but I do a lot of steady damage and regularly break 2K. I believe full well with a better staff and some upgrades I'll be reasonably competitive. I'm not trying to act that I can compete with a good DPS, but I come with other benefits that make up for it and then some. The only time I'm usually not engaged is for bosses with nasty AoE or "oh shit" situations where it's more prudent for me to back up and help heal (I'm not used to playing with any mages).

Templar and gladiator are two jobs that really get the shaft in the air. Best thing you can do is get a weapon that extends and stock up on any ranged abilities that slow or stun as you can.

Definitely good invite rate, no question. Powerful and versitile class, I love my chanter -- might even be my favorite class. He seems to be interested in a predominantly DPS-oriented class, though, and chanter is more support oriented. Chanter does appreciable damage, but you absolutely must gear for it. Also, Word of Wind is without a doubt the best PvE DP ability, seriously boosting the power of the whole group. Various mantras and lesser Words are quite good for the whole party as well. However, a lot of times you WILL end up backup healing, if not main healing, in PUGs.

I never really had that problem and at 45 plus I found myself gaining a lot of exp doing stuff out on my own testing my limits. Without aoe healing and status healing I just won't main heal a group.

For me it's a really of question of what I'm working towards. I don't like healers because I grew up on the idea of overhealing is a waste once the Comp Heals chains of yesteryear were done, so the idea of gearing up for big heals never excited me. Not to say it doesn't have a place in PvP (or even PvE..) but for some reason it never clicked for me as a motivational goal.

DPS on the other hand, always keeps me coming back as at least a baseline motivator. What am I doing here? Well obviously, I'm farming for 5 more damage per swing, or bolt, or whatever. The issue with Chanter, in my opinion, isn't can it hold its own against the pure DPS classes (I don't think they should in general, WoW be damned), is DPS its secondary role behind buffing, when geared properly? If not (in other words, if healing is always its stronger secondary role versus DPS, regardless of gear or spec), then I think I've made a bad choice.

The reason I came to the boards to ask is that I've personally seen how drastically classes change as you get deep into the 30s and into the 40s (I have a 37 Sorc), and from what I've heard about Chanters, that change when you hit the early-mid 40s is very drastic from a DPS standpoint, so it's difficult to take a wait and see approach.

Thanks again for the responses, hopefully these boards fire up a bit now that 1.9 and 2.0 are on the horizon. I know it certainly got me checking this game out again.

PS I certainly don't *mind* healing, I just don't want to be one of those poor bastards who's hurting himself and others by gearing up for a sec that the class just simply isn't built to support (like Druids going Moonkin in vanilla wow, or Melee Bards in FFXI).

Only thing that really hasn't had me jumping at my cleric or even a chanter more is the game's control scheme, and to a lesser extent, the targeting system. If I could recreate FFXI's system, meleeing and healing at the same time would be a snap. As is, however, no sub-targeting can make maintaining a primary target a pain. In turn, you're usually better off just hanging back.

Well you can set up macros that are linked to different brands. That's a way to heal sub targets. Any chanter who isn't focusing on dealing damage is just being lazy. Mantra are self cycling, buffs last an hour, and the only thing you need to apply actively is word of inspiration/protection.

All of the best abilities chanters get after 40. Inescapable Judgment at 42, Recovery Spell at 45, Mountain Crash/Invincibility Mantra. I don't do as much damage as other DPS jobs, but chanter is the one true hybrid class. Support doesn't take a lot of effort. After that I don't know why a chanter wouldn't focus on dealing damage.

I think the only time a chanter doesn't have a DPS role is if they're being lazy or you have two chanters in a party. There's not even much gear that you can take on that doesn't favor you to do nothing but support.

I don't have enough fucking buttons to make special brand slots. Though, I guess them adding another bar with the patch could help there. Still, 6 buttons for one action when a properly designed 1 still kinda sucks.

Can you play on an EU Aion server from the US? Can you even get the EU client?

They use the same client, but you need to buy an EU account to play on their servers.

Incorrect, they don't use the same client, you can change your client to play EU accounts if you're NA, click like options or w/e at the top of your NCSoft Launcher, and there is a option for what client you have, you can change it to EU. But I have both an EU and NA account and I can't run them both from the same client.

So if you change your client to EU you can access the EU servers? Sorry I know kinda dumb question. XP

Anyway I'm currently working on a ranger twink and so far it's like my SM when it comes to fighting. Mostly keep the mob as far away as possible while still being able to shoot and kite it. And my only issue is that when I try to jump shoot, I end up gliding into the mob instead. <_< How do I jump shoot with out gliding?

Having amazing amounts of problems downloading/installing/running Aion and I don't know wtf the problem is. Downloaded the 7GB file overnight, it installed. Then I tried to run it today when I got home from work, and the launcher just hangs. So I swapped the client to Europe region (I bought Aion and set it up from the UK) and it had a 873MB file to download. Fine, I did that. Finishes downloading, goes to install it. Error. Repairs. Error. Loop of errors. W T F is this?

I got a godstone drop in DP tonight. 98 wind damage at 20% proc rate. I listed it for now, is there anything practical I could do with it (i.e. a class that it would really be useful for)?

Shines best on someone stacking Mboost since I believe that also affects its damage potential. Magical accuracy would also be a factor, too. So, yeah, pawn it if neither really apply to you.

Anyone got any advice for leveling Stigma choices for Chanters? That shield seems good, but perhaps the aoe heal is worth it for healing pugs in instances? Bonus, you don't have to change targets!

I'm 21, concerned mostly with 20-40 for now, at least to keep an eye on /lfg for good deals on things I'll *need* to ding into.

    Thanks!

    Edit: I'm keeping Rage obviously.
