    lol

While I see the humor, I feel it's necessary to point out that it's (it being depersonalization disorder) not *exactly* an inability to determine what's real or not. It's more like a perpetual state of out of body experience. Like, you know things are real, but you feel like you're just observing yourself observing them, not actually experiencing that direct observation itself.

Terror management theory is pretty broad and this is only a part of it. This theory also suggests that one of the reasons why males are so attracted to breasts is because they remind the male of life and not death.
    Hmmm... interesting.

haha man, I know what you mean. Two times i have taken ~900 mg DXM ( I usually take around 400 mg and im about 135 lb)

When it kicked in, I could not walk or do anything but lay there and close my eyes. My hearing was majorly enhanced to the point where I was listening to all the conversations going on outside my room down the hall and I was basicly watching tv in my mind.

Also when taking about 550 mg, I would stand in my room with my eyes closed ( they get realy sensetive to light) and I was walking around my house basicly being able to see everything in my mind with my eyes closed.

Dxm has shown me amazing things but I have been doing it way too much so Im taking a month off and possibly stopping all drug use all together as I have been having suicidal thoughts for three years now and I thing my drug use makes my depression worse.

It's nothing serious. It's only happened about 3~4 times in my lifetime. Not concerned as much as stirred by it. I'll take your offer tho on the reading material

I'm responding to someone else about some of this stuff in pm's atm, so I won't go super in depth here right now, but here are some good resources:

Dissociative Disorders-What you need to know-FAQs < the underlying concepts

Depersonalization disorder - Definition, Description, Causes and symptoms, Demographics, Diagnosis, Treatments, Prognosis, Prevention, Resources <depersonalization specifically

Personality Factors Associated With Dissociation: Temperament, Defenses, and Cognitive Schemata -- Simeon et al. 159 (3): 489 -- Am J Psychiatry < not super informative for someone that's not studying the field, but an interesting study done on the potential factors for occurrence. Unfortunately, the conclusion is essentially "maybe these things contribute... needs more information."

Depersonalization and Derealization < Don't read too much into this site. They're trying to sell psychological systems. But, that page gives a bit of insight into the differences and similarities between depersonalization and derealization.

The wiki articles are also good.

To get more specific information you'd need to... well, get more specific lol, with what your symptoms seem to imply and go from there. Keep in mind that depersonalization and derealization themselves are essentially symptoms of more specific (but varied) causes.

It's more like when you're driving and you know that you've been driving for 10 minutes (on a road you know well, generally), and realize that you have absolutely no recollection of actually having done it, you just know that you did.

Hmm it is kind of like this feeling I have been getting periodically for about 5 years now. Its the most bizarre thing ever.

Basically, every now and then, some sort of external stimulus makes me remember, extremely vividly, a dream I had years ago. When this occurs, I get extremely dizzy and feel like I am going to through up, I start to sweat and feel extremely hot. I am able to recite the dream extremely accurately. It lasts about a minute then goes away. When the feeling goes away, I completely forget any details about the dream. Like, I cannot recall a damn thing. Having been around people when its happened I start to tell them what I am feeling, and apparently the dream has the following random things:

    -A pokemon battle
-A gambling game with Ronfar from Lunar saying "Its my lucky coin!"
-a honeycomb shaped ceiling that is actually a bunch of rooms.

There is a lot of other stuff going on but I don't remember it. I had this flashback thing once while driving and almost crashed.

While we're sort of on the topic... I hate it when I'm driving and I forget if the pedal that my foot is currently pressing is the gas or brake. =(

I get this when I'm dehydrated. Which actually happened today because I was sick and shit out 5-6 pounds then I couldn't figure out where the right controls for the AC were in my car. It also happens when I get careless after like an hour of cardio or fast, focused, heavy lifting at the gym then it's hard to remember where I parked or if I'm driving the right way home.

Read Nausea by Sartre. The first thing you described is EXACTLY that (well, if you mean objectively in the literal sense of everything around you being an object, not a concept). Not exactly sure if it's the same thing OP is talking about, though.

I've felt it a bunch of times throughout my life, and it creeps me out every time. I had a really long and interesting discussion about the novel with my Existentialism TA about a week before I dropped the course. <_<

Phil was my major for a couple years before I switched to Psych, but in that time I read a lot of Sartre, so I know what you're referring to haha. And no, I mean everything as a concept/Being, not being.

I've gotten the same feeling you're talking about during a great acid trip. I didn't freak out, I just sorted out my thoughts, and was reintroduced to the world. It's a great experience if you have any control over it.

I figured this would be a good thread to list weird experiences.

For the past two years, I've been having weird dream moments that were unreal. I would usually be taking a nap on the couch, and all the sudden I find myself waking up with one eye open, and one eye stuck in the dream world. I was able to see my white couch and my living room with my open eye, while seeing a dream world (flying in a city) in my closed eye, as well as hearing the dream world in my ear on the closed eye's side of the face. It lasted about 10-15 seconds, and I really felt like I was going fucking insane the first few times it happened. During this moment my body is paralyzed (I guess by sleep paralysis? but it slowly starts up)

After that experience, I've learned that dreams are not just thoughts but they are actual projections on your eye that you can see (I've always thought they were just really vivid thoughts). As well as increasing my speculation on Deja Vu, these moments that keep happening really taught me how intricate our own brains are.

Before anyone else says that my open eye was merely a part of the dream, I assure you it was not. After the first time I thought that too, but after a few more times I am 100% positive that one eye was open in real life while the other was closed. Also, the eye that opens usually keeps blinking in a struggling manner.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

How? This is an important question to trying to determine what's going on here.

At first glance this sounds like either a false awakening or a mental construct from awakening to sleep paralysis while in a lucid dream. I.E. it *sounds*, at first glance, like either you weren't really awake or you weren't really dreaming, and one or the other is a type of hallucination (of sorts). If you've got some kind of specific knowledge as evidence to the contrary, we need to know what.

Also, when you fell asleep, were you kind of "daydreaming" and drifting off? Or is this directly from just laying down with the intention of going to sleep and no real imaginative processes occurring before hand?

Solipsism is the philosophical idea that one's own mind is all that exists. Solipsism is an epistemological or ontological position that knowledge of anything outside the mind is unjustified. The external world and other minds cannot be known and might not exist. In the history of philosophy, solipsism has served as a skeptical hypothesis.
This is what I firmly believe.

Also, the OP's experiences sound a lot like almost every time I've done ketamine.

The fact that on several occasions I have kept the real world eye open while my dream world eye finally awoke/opened(I guess after trying hard to awake) along with my body awakening completely leads me to believe it's 100% real.

Also I've seen another post about it on the internet but could not really find facts of what the phenomenon is. Was curious if anyone experienced it here on BG or was educated on the subject.

It only happens when I nap mid day, and before said nap, I just lay down on the couch with sleeping intent.

I can't find the original post on a dreamforum but I found this new one. One eye(Closed) in dream, one eye (Open) in reality! [Archive] - Dreamviews lucid dreaming forums

I've been dying in most of my dreams lately. It's like I'm poisoned, I lose control of my body and usually fall to my death or drown. Sometimes there are people around, but they always either ignore me or just stare or point at me.

But I'm pretty sure both eyes are closed at the time.

The question is, can we become Neo? Upon the realization that our existence is a simulation, shouldn't we be able to take control of it, at least sometimes? Or, hell, do we already?

How damn much did you do at a time? lol Ketamine is fairly selective, that kind of experience requires some pretty serious levels of excitotoxicity.

One time I was convinced that I could climb walls like spider man. That didn't last long though, as I repeatedly failed miserably. Generally it was a couple 20 bags here and there, but on the occasions that friends and I would go pick up a few bottles to sell, it was almost obligatory for the 2-3 of us to do a vial the day we got it lol.
