What about Tranquillien?
Also, them using the Highborne of Eldre'thalas itself is a plothole. Most of the Shen'dralar were killed by their "Prince", Tortheldrin, in order to sustain the captivity of the demon whom they were draining power from to maintain their immortality. There aren't even enough left to give the Night Elves access to a new class. I'll quote wowwiki:
Way to remember your own lore, Blizzard. The Highborne of Eldre'thalas were rather malevolent in the first place-- they certainly haven't "learned their lesson."Thousands of years passed and the power required to keep Immol'thar imprisoned while sustaining life within Eldre'Thalas began to shift. The cost to keep Immol'thar bound grew to overshadow the rate at which energy could be siphoned and distributed. The once net gain turned to loss. In response to this crisis, Prince Tortheldrin and his Shen'dralar loyalists began murdering their fellow Highborne, sacrificing their victims' life force to fuel the pylons in order to keep Immol'thar imprisoned and preserve their immortality.[3] At least one Highborne, a quest giver named Azj'Tordin, has escaped death at the hands of Prince Tortheldrin, but most have not been so lucky.
Like I've said, there are more major plotholes in "Cataclysm" than WotLK, tBC and Vanilla combined.
"Oh look a scourge base of operations right outside the scar they created, but hay guyz it's okay lemme find that necklace of the Banshee Queen and she'll sing us as song and we're frenz 4 lyfe!"
Complaining that the Highborne are on unfriendly terms with the Night Elves of Darnassus and therefore that door is closed forevar just LOOK at the DM lore OH MY GOD...
gets old, considering other races that have since reconciled without much strain.
I don't see how The Lady's Necklace quest could even nearly be considered a plothole. There's actually lore behind it, you know.
I can't wait to hear the bitching about Worgen/Goblin DKs. Not like it hasn't happened already, shit is getting old.
Highborne? Sure. Highborne of Eldre'thalas? No, that very clearly makes no sense. They're still power-siphoning, immortality-hungry, demon-summoning infidels in lore and to the Night Elves. Combine that with the fact that there are quite literally less than a handful left, and well.... Umm... Shit, let's just cross out all previous lore and make it anew because we're lazy!
Can you not see the corner-cutting here?
And blood elves were the epitome of a healthy union that anyone would want to join their alliance of races.
And man, the world sure loved its death knights a year ago.
You don't see the Kirin Tor sitting around siphoning fel energy or summoning demons. Neither of those things is explicitly inclusive to mastering the arcane.
No, what I don't care for is shitty ass writing. Metzen is a hack, he's writing whatever he wants now into the lore because he thinks it's "Cool". That was their backing behind this whole NE thing. Not that it fit into the story, they went "This is cool lets do it", then later on went "Oh ppl are whining, lets just make up some shit in the lore to fit this in".
And what about Tranq? That it was a little base for the BE's to be pushing back what remained of the scourge? Yeah its crazy to think the scourge would have operations going on in the deadscar, I mean STRAT is only to the south of it and still invested with undead.
From the EU boards
started on the US forums here:
World of Warcraft - English (NA) Forums -> NE Mages = The Death of Lore?
, but the OP and this response is so good, and I feel it pretty much sums up how alot of these changes aren't lore breaking, but actually, make a lot of sense. Just a lil'bit of spin.
The original thread here, where the OP asks if NE MAges= The Death of Lore.
Q u o t e:
The lore of this game is one of it's strongest assets. I hate it when it so easily retconned or cast aside. How do you think Blizzard is going to reconcile Night Elves and Arcane Magic users? Isn't this the reason for the beginnings of the Druidism Culture, the fall of Azshara, the Naga, Illidan's original imprisonment and a whole host of other issues. Given their past how can the night elves possibly turn back to magic?
Is blizz simply opening the game up as much as possible before letting it wind down?
I am not real sure how I feel about some of theses changes, don't even get me started on Troll Druids........

Q u o t e:
Oh no! Lore is doomed!
How could it possibly make sense that a culture that used arcane magic for tens of thousands of years would go back to using it?!
How could a society possibly change its ideas and opinions on a subject in the wake of a massive catastrophe, especially after several years of close association with other societies that use arcane magic liberally with minimal ill effect?!
How could a species that spent 10,000 years as immortals and completely isolated from other civilizations possibly experience an shift in their values after loosing that immortality and coming into intimate contact with several other cultures?
ITS MADNESS!
Also, stop using retcon as a pejorative. Its a literary device, nothing more and nothing less. If you're not smart enough to realize that retcon does not automatically equal "bad," you're not fit to judge others for making use of them in their work.
I doubt i could summarise it so well as this player above has.
At Blizzcon, some intelligent fan asked "How can Worgen be Death Knights, since the Lich King will be dead in Cataclysm?" and Metzen got on stage and said "There have been several times in WoW's history we have had to remove or destroy lore to go foward, and this is one of those times, just forget it happened, and have fun playing the game!
Ahh that Metzen, such a hack.
Ahh that Meresgi, such a moaner.
Ahh that J.R.R. Tolkien, what a hack.Originally Posted by Wikipedia

In the first edition of The Hobbit, that Tolkien copied from another book entitled The Habbet, Gollum did not appear quite as wretched or murderous, and indeed showed Bilbo the way out after losing the riddle-game. Tolkien changed his characterization though because Tolkien later stated "He thought it was COOL"
Fixed for you.
I love how you misconstrue any criticism as crying. Blizzard isn't infallible, and their mistakes deserve to be pointed out and remarked on just as much as anyone else's.
