You gotta admit it's going both ways tho lol, you can't keep making fun of them for disagreeing and expect them not to stay with the subject.
It seems to be that any criticism of this vastly and omnipotent game should be met as if we were in the Dark Ages and I had just said "You know, I think people that say the world is flat are wrong".
I've never said WoW was a shit game that had nothing going for it, it does or I wouldn't have played it for 2yrs. In the past year though I have felt it going downhill in terms of story (Which is what I enjoy in a game like this) and content. What I criticize are faults that ARE true in WoW and a lot of people have found lately. Sorry but WoW is not unerring and Metzen did not die on a Spaceship Cross for your arcane sins.
Essentially my thoughts as well.
Sage Sundi: "Hey guys, I have an actual idea. No, really, shut up! For our next expansion, let's just have some random tidal wave wipe out Aht'Urhgan, Mindartia, Quon, and have everything instead play out in WotG. Because, you know, in the future, everything's decimated! Oh, we can throw in a couple new campaign battles, too..."
That's what they're doing to all existing lore. Can't tie up loose story ends, nope... Have to go and throw an ill-explained cataclysm in there! Deathwing wouldn't even have nearly enough power to do something of that magnitude, otherwise he would have just done it 10,000 years earlier to free the Old Gods when they had first dominated his mind, or to destroy the dragonflights, or eliminate the Alliance's resistance to the orcs...
Isn't that exactly what he was attempting before he was ultimately robbed of the Dragon Soul and defeated by the remaining dragonflights? How much multitasking can you expect from a dragon? Even after his defeat he was clearly capable of sinking continents, why is it such a stretch that he could cause a second Sundering?
10,000 years ago he had no army, no Dragon Soul and the best ally he could manage wound up destroying Draenor. With his allies self-destructing and no weapon with which to pacify dragonflights ready to subdue him once more what exactly would you think he was capable of? Clearly they've granted him new power here and if you don't like it well shit, clearly you've read all the lore they're going to write for Cataclysm, share it bro because I'm itching to find out what you already claim to know is bad writing.
Chris Metzen wrote it, there you go, I just proved it's going to be full of Mary Sue characters and plot holes so wide you could drop a planet through. Sorry but good writing is not going "Well now this evil guys HAS SUPER EYE LASERS AND A BLASTER SWORD because I think it's cooooool!!!!!!"
Chris Metzen has written most ALL of the Warcraft Lore in the games, and if you played WoW for 2 years and any of the RTS games you clearly like it, so you're going to have to come up with something better than that if you want to pretend you can actually swing your balls of 'MAH CRITICIZM IS TRUTH HERP DERP' around.
"Lore is interesting, but ultimately worthless, if it gets in the way of us making the game the way we want it."
That's a quote from his mouth. Most of the original Warcraft story was copied from Warhammer, the story of Warcraft was interesting in the first 2 games dealing with the wars and invasions. When Warcraft 3 came around it was a nice change to see what had become of everything, though the Frozen Throne was not really needed, but helped show what became of Arthas. WoW has done nothing but shit on any story components that were left. It's no longer about telling a story, its about putting whatever Metzen thinks is interesting in and then making up a story, or just saying "Yeah w/e, ignore the lore here". That's bad writing in anyones book.
So wait, you're hating on Metzen but not Richard Knaak? Thanks to him, we have Mary Sues like Rhonin and Krasus.
Bad writing or excellent game making?
I don't really think they go hand in hand. Sure the game is going in a nice direction, but it is kinda sweeping much of the lore under the rug for the sake on convince and "innovation", So it is bad writing. I'm positive they could have written up an expansion just as interesting as cataclysm while closely following the lore if they had wanted to, but they went the big explosions route instead.
Oh well, Don't cry over a glass of spilled milk.
Who? The Old Gods? We've no evidence they ever granted him power, they just drove him insane and he used his cunning and standing as an Aspect to betray the other flights. Blizzard? This is the lorelol we're talking about from Metzen. Granting characters the sudden power to overcome the obstacles they're beset by-- deus ex machina-- is a very poor writing tool used by writers who don't have the creativity to solve the problems they themselves presented in the first place.
We have no evidence any of the Aspects were granted such absurd power over their respective specialties-- the Titans only gave them a modicum of power so that they could police Azeroth. This is proven by the fact that Alexstrasza, Life-Binder herself, couldn't cure the undeath an Argent Crusade soldier in Icecrown had contracted. Malygos himself didn't know every spell in existence-- as was his duty to know-- or he could have killed any paltry raid that set out to kill him. (In Crystalsong Forest lore, a single blue dragon petrified a group of black drakes chasing him with a spell. The result is the partially crystallized forest there now. Why didn't Malygos just petrify us? lol Poor writing.)
Ysera herself-- even though she created the Emerald Dream-- can't defeat the Nightmare that blights it. She'll probably succumb to it, knowing Blizzard's nonchalance towards lore. Do you see where I'm going with this? Aspects don't have so much power, granting it to them out of no where is a lorelol. Deathwing can't blow up worlds.
Why would he have even made the Dragon Soul if he had the power to cause a Cataclysm like this? Why would he have bothered enslaving Alexstrasza if he could have single-handedly wrought havoc on two(lol, NOT THREE THOUGH. Makes sense.) continents? It doesn't make sense that he suddenly has the power to do this out of left field.
Not to mention that Malygos was the very last of the blue dragonflight, though it appears many more magically sprouted from his ass. And while on the Deathwing rant, why would he attempt to destroy the world after he tried so damn hard to win complete control of it?
quote from metzen
"And what has happened in recent years is that the whispers of the Old Gods have gotten worse, the power of the Old Gods has seen rising with C'thun and Yogg-Saron, there are more, their power has magnified Deathwing's power, you know, tenfold. He's a very, very powerful dude this days."
He didn't go and sink continents himself, when he left deepholm he tore a rift between the elemental plane and azeroth, which caused the cataclysm. Honestly, get over it.
If you are playing this game for the lore, then how the fuck are you still playing after all this time. Lore is for one thing, giving us baddies to fight against. It's not there to make this awesomely complicated story, it's there for us to go "gee i wonder who we will fight next" and blizzard already has a thousand enemies they could toss out at any time such as titans old gods dragons people commanders soldiers and dead guys.
I don't give a shit about arthas, I was excited as shit to fight Kael and KJ, Achimonde, etc, and want to fight some titans and sargeras. Deathwing sounds fun too, I don't care what rules they break to make it happen. Bring on Azshara already.
I'm sorry, you mean playing the game based off of those 3 RTS games all steeped within a heavy lore-centric universe. I mean, you may as well just come out and say it. "Lore exists to give me my purples".
From my background and profession, storytelling is a major deal. When you set up that much of a backstory and then turn around and say "Well...this is going to happen, forget I said anything back then and ignore it lol" that makes you a hack.
That whole quote makes me roll my eyes. "Oh yeah, he gained a whole bunch of stat points because...well because im Metzen and he's my new focus so he's going to have everything I want him to have".
That's how Metzen writes, he creates a character he likes, and puts them above everyone else until he's tired of them, then sets them aside and raises another character up. Right now it's Garrosh, soon it will be Deathwing, before it was Arthas. There's nothing wrong with having a main focal point, but when that focal point clouds out EVERYTHING else happening, that's bad writing.
Based off 3 RTS games yet how many years has wow been out screwing up the lore?
And yes, he gained a whole bunch of stat points because thats how they want the story to go. They want more old god influence and why not give it to deathwing whos been dormant.
And I'm sorry you feel it's bad writing, really, but when there are 11million playing the game and probably 98% dont give a fuck about the writing well then no matter how much you dislike it or people bitch it's not going to change a thing. As a side note, I hate the writing in Madden games. Same comments for the past 10+ years.
Fuck those chefs at McDonald's, it is an affront to my background and profession that so many billions of ignnant muthafuckas swallow those delicious chicken nuggets with tangy sauce when clearly it's cheap reprocessed tripe.
I DON'T CARE THAT IT'S DELICIOUS AND FUN TO EAT FUCK THAT PLEBEIAN SHIT.
P.S. Lore exists to give me purples.
Minor correction needed.
Maybe I'd care about the lore more if they used it in WoW enough so that I could take notice of it without spending hours on Wikipedia. I mean, who woulda known a lot of those bosses in 80s heroics had legitimately interesting back-stories behind them without it? Maybe that's the reason why they didn't put too much lore in it directly in the first place. I can't be bothered to find out.
