I dont know if it is related but i get the 'Unable to read disc' message often.

How i fix it and i dont know why it works but if you play music through your xbox, whether it be through USB or a track you have on your xbox, then run the game.

Its such a ridiculous thing lol, but yea do this! For some reason it helps bring up the 'you didn't shut down POL properly' menu thing where otherwise you just keep getting cannot read disc message.

Random as f**k but hey, as an Xbox FFXI player...... I'm not complaining there's a solution better than 'format and see.'

I'm not sure if your problem is exactly the same, not sure why you get the message after proper shut downs - but hopefully the solution can be the same. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't use my Xbox to play music though. For clarification, do you mean I need to copy a song from a cd to my Xbox and then play the song if I get the error? Then retry to play the FFXI disc?

I tried my idea a couple of times this morning and it appears to be working. Instead of using the "shut down" feature, I used "log off" and then logged off the Playonline viewer. I turned my Xbox off and back on and logged into FFXI twice. Hopefully this will continue working for me.

    1. when it happens again, play a song, from the xbox hard drive

    2. Leave it playing and start the game.

    3. Once you're on POL Turn off the song

    4. Profit

    Edit: Beaten;;

I fixed this by installing the disc to my xbox (hit Y on the bootup blade). This worked for me so I didn't have to do the music workaround.

Hi. I just joined this site because I had a problem with FFXI on Xbox today and I found this thread which is pretty similar to my problem. I have been playing on PS2 on and off since the NA release. I just got FFXI for my Xbox so my girlfriend can play with me. I installed and updated it two days ago. We played together for the first time yesterday. I turned the game off with the "shut down" feature in game. Today, I went to turn the game on and got the error referenced in this thread - unable to read disc. I called Xbox support and they had no idea how to fix it. I called Playonline and they told me the only way to fix it was to reformat my hard drive. I did that. Now FFXI is updating all night.

My concern is that I don't want to have to go through this frequently. Next time, I'm going to try shutting the game down the old school way before the "shut down" feature existed - by logging off exiting from the Playonline viewer. If that doesn't work, I am willing to buy another Xbox and try the solution explained by Kainos above. I would rather not do that if I don't have to though. This thread is from 2009. Does anybody have any advice about this issue?

Sorry for the wall of text but here goes ...

I used to play on xbox360 and initially i did the following :

After several tries to get it to read the disc, i cleared cache on the entire Hard drive for the xbox, which was a major pain to reinstall ( 4~5hrs+).

After a while i said no more XBOX button > shutdown...

The way i finally got through this "error" was doing the following without clearing cahce, erasing stuff, uninstall, etc..

First to clarify the " can't read disc error" : You can do two of the following:

If you have gotten the can't read error message, following these steps will take you not directly to the POL start screen, but will take you to a POL error message that it was not shutdown properly and some data will be lost.... ignore this and select start playonline viewer. ( i never had any data lost aside from items in my inventory being randomly categorized)

    1) connect any USB audio device ( i used a small 2gb usb drive with MUSIC in it) and set it to play BEFORE pushing the play button on the XBOX360 dahsboard, then as the music starts playing, now you select play to start ffxi on xbox360. ( just to be safe let it continue playing music until you can succesfully log in into ffxi.

    2) Store music directly into you xbox360 HD ( transfer from computer, via usb or anything else, not a whole bunch, i used only 1 song in my HD after i discovered this could be done). Again as with option 1, PLAY the song on the xbox dashboard BEFORE pushing Play game to access FFXI. Then as the music starts playing, now you select play to start ffxi on xbox360. ( just to be safe let it continue playing music until you can succesfully log in into ffxi.

If none of this works, then you will need to clear cache from the Xbox HD, but this will erase all of your stored things ( other game data, songs, etc etc) and you will need to resintall from scratch ( Might be handy to have codes, passwords, emails, account info with you because if you clear cahce, you will need to input all that again).

    Hope this helps.

EDIT : >.>p beaten but still...
