I'm buying a new laptop and pc next year too but I'm holding out till next summer since it's still too early.
There will probably be updates to technology/laptops for sure by next summer. Might be best to hold out till then if no hurry.

I toke a look round the FX laptop other people linked i think you better get the Asus for many reasons
1-Asus G51 is 15 inch, Gateway is 17 inch "Dunno about you but to me smaller=better"
2-G51 is lighter by 2 pounds
3-G51 screen resolution is 1920x1080p while FX resolution is very low 1360x768
4-G51 can take up 2x Hard drive inside it while FX can take only one
5-G51 got faster CPU/GPU and newer Gpu GTX series not 9800~
6-FX is big laptop with a huge battery stick out of it while G51 is 15 inch
7-G51 got better warranty (read about it)
8-in G51 you can upgrade ram to 8gb in the future
9-G51 got back light for keyboard "can turn it on/off"
I have no idea why would anyone get FX over G51, FX is old design while G51 got released last month !
I thought you had 2000$ ;p why are you looking for cheaper laptops now, anyway if you wanna save money then get this version of G51
Asus - Laptop with Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology - White/Black - G51VX-RX05
It's for 1000$ only but i highly advice of the 1300$ version from newegg it have better warranty/bluetooth/1920x1080p LED/better CPU "Totally worth the extra 300$" , and remember that it's almost impossible to upgrade your laptop once you buy it unlike desktops where you can easily upgrade them.
The G51 is so new that in fact Engadget have just posted the laptop review a min ago in here

I didnt read it but maybe if you do you will see if it's the right laptop for you or not
Seeing as you want a PS3 as well, how come not hold out a bit on the laptop o.o? If you're only going to use it for FF14. I'm excited and a bit impatient as well to buy a new pc/laptop but since it's still 1yr+ away, I'd wait for current models to come down in price or even newer models 8D
Ah.. I said what I said because the laptop I have is only about 2.5 years old and costed about 2,000$ total and it's very outdated now. I do regret spending that much but they also made a mistake and sent me an extra of the same exact laptop.. which I ended up selling to my co-worker for 500$ lol.
I also like ASUS laptops and I found this one intriguing but I don't think there's a set price or release date yet =/

I have a Gateway P7811-FX and it's a solid laptop overall. However, 17" laptops are beasts. 10 pounds may not seem like much but it'll wear on you if you have to carry it around all day.
Looking through NewEgg, one thing that has stood out is Asus's customer service. Anytime someone posts a negative review on their products, Asus posts to see what they can do to resolve the issue. Having an inordinate amount of experience with both sides of customer service, interactions like that really impress me.
As far as Gateway goes, I can't really say the same. Gateway is part of Acer now and their customer service and technical support records are far from ideal. Their driver sites are notorious for being out of date and all of their tech support is outsourced now. I've been fighting them on a repair issue with my laptop for the last couple of months now. Any time I called in they would try to have me repeat the same basic troubleshooting despite me advising them of all the steps I had previously covered. The last rep I had kept telling me to go into the BIOs on startup despite me telling him numerous times that the computer would not power up at all.
Like I said, I really like the laptop but their service as a whole has really put me off of buying another one.
Wow, I didn't know Gateway was part of Acer. I used to work in the electronics industry, Acer by far had the worst rap as far as quality, warranty coverage, availability to speak to, etc.
