is this whole things CGI? i cant even tell whats going on
wiki has a plot synopsis, gist of it is paralytic dude signs up for program to control a body (or Avatar) which is a human-alien hybrid, in order to deal with the aliens. I'm guessing humans are gonna kind of be the bad guys but I don't know off the top of my head. JC said roughly 60 percent of it is cgi, although initially he wanted to do it entirely CG (again according to wiki)
The blue aliens look fucking retarded.
yeah I was a bit dissapointed about that, tbh
still definitely gonna see it
I mean in the long run 10ish dollars isn't a big deal. Very few movies make me mad I saw them.
I agree that the hype may be too much for anything to live up to such expectations, but this is James Cameron we are talking about so I'll wait patiently. CGI / live acting looked flawless, can't wait to see just what it looks like in 3D. I'm good for 2-3hrs of pure eye candy
Just got back from the 15min sneek preview in Wellington, NZ. Doesn't give away much story but the visuals are fucking incredible! I cannot wait until December!
Couldn't take pictures or anything sadly, so heres a random pic of my tickets just so you know i'm not trolling.

Looks like a very expensive version of Dances with Wolves, but lots of CGI and violence lol.
From the trailers online the visuals look nice, but a movie in my opinion cannot stand on visual effects alone. This movie feels like it is going to parallel Dances with Wolves which makes it slightly harder for me to watch, even though Dances With Wolves was a pretty awesome movie.
I've always had trouble seeing 3D stuff, so can't say much about it. No one else in the theatre went all "Oooooo Ahhhhhh" so I don't think I missed anything without the 3D. There definitely were scenes that i'm sure it would have been cool.
I'd have to say a part of my excitment is just that its a completely original script. Not many sci-fi movies these days arn't taken from a book or short story.
Well when Cameron said he original conceived of the movie 14 years ago, but the tech didn't exist then, so the script has basically been sitting around for 14-15years... So parts of it prolly won't be as original as they would have been back-in-the-day. Won't detract from the movie, but not surprising if we do see some similarities from other movies (still would make Dances w/wolves an older movie)
Just got back.
3D was done well, mostly just adding depth with minimal "OMG SOMETHING IN YOUR FACE"ness.
Film is fucking gorgeous, vivid and vibrant as hell.
It's the Crysis of movies, in terms of how awesome it looks.
My friend saw the 3D during the comic con panel and said it was the most jaw dropping amazing thing he's ever seen regarding film. Another person said it was "like watching live-action Fern Gully." I'm a huge fan of 3D film and can't wait for this movie, even if the Avatars look a bit silly.
I never really paid this movie any mind back when I was looking up info for M. Knight Sham..however the heck you spell it, version of Avatar. Just out of pure curiosity did I click the thread here and watch the trailer.
Oh boy.. I can't wait to see this in December. The CG looks very well done. The world and creatures just look so.. vivid. I think the blue alien things look fine. They reminded me of a more feline Draenei; much more long and slender minus the hooves and horns.
I'm curious as to what all was shown in the 15 minute screening. Was it just all action scenes similar to the trailer? The boyfriend was curious about how good the acting was. I showed him the trailer but, like some others are saying, it's all action/showy and that can only hold up so much.
since its all essentially a big trailer im not gonna spoiler it
couple minutes of the CO talking about the planet being dangerous, people will die.
couple minutes of Jake getting out of wheelchair and into avatar
couple minutes in the jungle encountering and being chased by a predator
couple minutes of alien chick saving his ass and them talking
couple minutes of him catching and breaking (like a horse) a dragonesque lizard thing, then flying it
then a montages of several 5ish second shots
They actually developed new CGI filming techniques for this movie; I don't recall the entire thing, but it was something like a virtual camera in a 3D environment, so that entire scenes could be produced, then the director could change camera angles on whim or something? It was pretty interesting, but a bit over my head for good retention; it should be in the wiki article.
My favorite part of this coming out is that he's said he wants his next project to be Battle Angel Alita. Which is both awesome and hilarious. One of my favorite mangas; only one I've ever paid real money for, at least for the whole series, come to think of it. He's going to use the same camera system for it, as well, which is why he wanted to wait til Avatar was finished.
The cast for Avatar is interesting, but I'm always doubtful about casting regular actors in VA roles. With a few notable exceptions, it's not usually a great idea. Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, maybe even Uhu--i mean, Zoe Saldana I think could work out, but I'm more than a little worried about Michelle Rodriguez and Giovanni Ribisi. Both put a lot of physical features into their acting; I'm vaguely reminded of Steve Buscemi in Spirits Within. Sure, it was an OK role, but man all I fucking heard was Steve Buscemi and it was creepy, was he standing off camera oh god is he behind me
I think the blue aliens look really fucking stupid... and if it's ferngully + dances with wolves in the 22nd century... This will be the most epic flop in cinema history.
Kinda wish I didn't miss the preview, but it was raining so hard :/
