Story = Ferngally + Dances With Wolves + Bug's Life
Immediately starting the film I knew I wanted to see it in IMAX (3D movies make my brain explode with pain). Within the first few moment and scenes I think most will completely know or have a good guess what happens next.
Visuals are what everyone is raving about and for good reason. This movie definitely picks at your curiosity and many of the landscape scenes look marvelous. If you do not see this movie, you will be disappointed if you catch it later outside of the big screen, I promise you.
Another positive was the CG during the action. Im a sucker for the "quick x2 zoom" look with the battle camera approach to action, so I like the cinematography. I LOVVEE multiple front firefights taken straight out of the Return of the Jedi play book. Seriously it makes you want more from both fronts and is an AWESOME formula for action success. I really hate that they only had a few action scenes and only one big final fight scene... but it was worth the entire nearly 3hr wait to see that last battle scene.
One thing they got right was being able to focus during the action, especially with the explosions that they had and shit flying everywhere... not to mention they were in a literal jungle. I could see other movies failing at being able to focus during the firefights and losing viewers in a CG blur of dust, flames and bullets.
Finally the head to heads with characters were not over the top choreographed crap. This is something the movie could have fell into easy, being mostly CG, but movments, swings, blocks, all the action seemed deliberate and not like a dance... more like a fight...
Thats not to say the visuals were perfect. I can definitely see some scenes better then the other. Even close-ups looking better then the most. I'm glad the movie got to the surface quickly, too many of the indoor scenes on the base seemed way to blue screened.
Sound was spot on and did its job. No more or less. If there was one disappointed, it was the creatures. Too many times I thought to myself "Man I remember the first time I saw Jurassic Park"
I liked the music but did not find it at all unique. It was extremely good, VERY good... but nothing new and honestly some of the final scenes sounded like music scores I've heard in other movies.
A think some acting talent was wasted, including with Weaver and Worthington. Their characters seemed cookie cutter, somewhat forced in the beginning and were only saved by the films length. What I mean by that is, I felt it took longer then most movies to get sucked into their character.
I will have to say the Colonel's character COULD have been worse... but it wasn't, and I liked it. I saw this guy last Sept. at conference for a presentation of the movie and game and he came off as a gunny wannabe, and no more. In this movie he wasn't tooo showy and was hand's on badass only when necessary. When he yelled, "Masks on" I thought "haha no way" and he did what I though kicking out that door. They also gave him some serious situational awareness in flight when Worthington was trying to take out that ship.
I could go into more about him and why I liked him and I think its that way b/c my expectations were so low and he didn't turn out like garbage.
One thing that really bothered the analytical me was the front to take out the tree. I know that where they wanted to drill and where the natives were living... but seriously, there was no other way that was beneficial on both sides? The whole idea had no logistical or diplomatic sense whatsoever. It would take YEARS to even eliminate the mess of that tree... Why not drill around... At this point I just felt the story was reaching. I could go on and on about how things did not make sense, and usually I just get over it and enjoy the spirit of the movie... but that was a big fucking tree... It just seemed like.
