The latest issue of Game Informer contains a surprising statistic for anyone who's ever loved and lost their Microsoft-branded home console – according to their survey, in which over 5,000 console owners participated, the Xbox 360's current failure rate due to the Red Ring of Death, E74 or other hardware failure is 54.2 percent. They also calculated the relative death toll for PS3s due to the Yellow Light of Death (10.3 percent) and Wiis, due to ... well, we're not actually sure what color the Wii's light turns to upon its demise (6.8 percent).

Unfortunately, for having the highest failure rate, survey participants also pinned Microsoft for having the least helpful customer service representatives. Not that it matters – later in the survey, only 3.8 percent of participants said they'd never buy another Xbox 360 due to its high failure rate.

Speaking of which, we're not sure what future techno-utopia this poll was conducted in, but a 54.2 percent Xbox 360 failure rate sounds awfully low. Had the survey's participants been comprised entirely of Joystiq staffers, it would have been a bone-chilling 100 percent.

Both Xbox 360 and PS3 are higher than I imagined but holy fuck at 54.2%, and only 3.8% said they'd never buy another Xbox due to high failure rate. And from the comments I'm seeing some people are on their 3rd/4th Xbox, and a few guys on their 5th/6th?

Looks like if you're in the market for an Xbox 360, it would probably be in your best interests to look for the newer Jasper model unless you want to go through this shit.

54% is beyond ridiculous... Chances are, though, that they knew the failure rate was this high and it was too late in the production process to do anything about it. Overlooking a failure rate of 54% is next to impossible in the hardware world.

I got my first 360 back in '07 december and it lasted until last december a week before christmas it died on me but I didn't send it in until 2 weeks later. Now I'm on my 2nd and it's begun to feel very fucking hot like my last before it died and it saddens me to think they still haven't found a way to fix this problem.

I originally wanted a ps3 when it came out but was too much and didn't want to request for something that much. Last year I went ahead and bought one during black Friday and I'm still loving my ps3 more but not sure what games to buy for it because I'm mostly on my 360.

I know at least 5 people that have had problems with their 360 and 1 with their Ps3. One thing I can say about Nintendo, is that their systems are usually the most reliable, sturdy, and efficient on the market for every generation. If they made good games Nintendo would probably be on top of the console wars. Maybe they'll get smart and merge with Microsoft in the future...

I've had my xbox since Christmas 07, and it just RROD a week ago, I sent it in last Monday, and they just created the shipping label to send it back to me so I should have it at my house again this friday if it stays on schedule. Not bad time wise

2nd month? I'm guessing you bought it used, because all PS3's come with at least a 1 year warranty through Sony

Don't think the warranty covers the YLOD, sure I remember reading before someone had to pay for a fix whilst still under warranty. I got a 360 on release, on my third one now. Had a PS3 since MGS4 came out and it is still going just fine.

The Wii uses 20W to run games, at most. The launch model PS3's used 200W, while the newer models use around 115W. Xbox 360 models use around 175W, I'm not sure how much the newer Jasper models use. 20W isn't going to generate a terrible amount of heat to fuck shit up in your system.

Never had a problem with my 360, but if it ever fails, I'm not getting another one until there's a xbox 360 slim or something like that.

It does. Only way you void warranty is if you open up the guts of the PS3 yourself and thereby ripping off your warranty label (EDIT: unless of course you do some stupid shit like drop beer over it, or some other dumb shit). I know this because my first PS3 YLOD'd, although I don't blame it, it was a launch PS3 and I played it a fuck load, left it on overnight a lot, and didn't have AC at the time so summers were a bitch.

There's so much that can go wrong and companies never seem to have customer service in place to help when shit goes bad. Warranties are good, but if it takes several months to get something fixed, it's almost not worth it.

I must get everything day 1 I have never had a system fail before that Ps3. They got it back to me really fast, and I haven't had a problem since. They gave me a new receipt and a new full warranty.

My 360 fried once (RROD) and it was a launch model... I sent it in and they sent me a completely new xbox, and the customer service rep was nice and helpful on the phone, I must be one of the lucky ones haha.
