Don't rent books! Torrent them!
Don't rent books! Torrent them!
^ I'd like to see more textbooks e-book'd and shit.
Just buy the outdated version of the textbook for cheap. It's only got a couple new pictures and a caption.
Too bad more and more books are going to online code format and profs are using that for graded material.
Ecce Romani
I just spend a hour sifting through google for free pdf, doc or torrent files of my books. Works for a lot of my books, the ones I don't find I just get a used copy.
Saved myself 400 dollars this semester alone.
As people have said before...buy used, sell back when you're done. There's the 2/3rds that you're saving through renting the book. Or buy used and keep it if it's a subject you think you'll be continually be interested in. I saved a lot of my text books actually because I enjoyed my major.
Really annoying when said pictures and caption typically offset every page number compared to the newest one your professor always bloody dictates from. Last time I bought an English based book new (fucking $80 for something we only used 30 pages out of).
Unfortunately for me, the other $500 in books I spent (excluding the $700 some on my own personal spendings) I need to keep for reference material for as long as I want my career path, yay for drawing related courses. >.>
[EDIT] And upon checking the site, everything that was 'required' by my classes are either almost the same price I paid new for them, or are listed 'out of stock'. (which doesn't surprise me on some given a couple of my books have been out of print for years). Guess they expect animation students to fend for themselves.
Personally after this past semester, any classes I take online will use online books. The ability to search for terms etc, makes life so much easier.
Least many of you can buy books.
Remember there's certain majors where there isn't wide-release style textbooks, so any books are written/made by the profs, and there's no 2nd hand market for them(or least book store doesn't buy them back).
Those guys get raaaaaapppppppppeeeeeddd.
If I ever have to write the textbook for my own course, I'm making it PDF only and giving it away, seriously fuck this shit. I don't need an extra 6~ grand a semester bad enough to do that to people.
www3.addall.com
saved me so much money, wish someone showed me sooner ; ;
the worst fucking deal is a required, university-specific abridged book. you have to buy it at full price, you have to sell it back for 30% (if you're lucky) of what you paid because no other campus will use it. i wrote an email to my professor about that book, he had no idea
but seriously, addall. there's another site that does it like addall, but I don't remember what it was.
