My PUP just dinged 53 and I been going ok solo with Tact Magician Hooks last couple levels, so my question is; do I go invest in higher +DMG h2h or just grab h2h that is around the same level as my PUP? My main is DRK so I'm used to seeing DMG90+ weapons, not +DMG stuff. o.o
When you're low-manning, I'd hope you wouldn't have melees on it anyway. Not sure what Jim is referring to in terms of either it being low-manned or not.
Can you trade in the ToAU rings for another ? My gut says yes but not sure how about to doing so.
my mnk is very nearly 75, and almost immediately after i get a respectable buffer on it, will be plunging head-first into tanking for salvage (other than unlocking penance, i'll be going in without merits initially). i have above average gear, tho no usu yet. i've got a couple of questions and some needed clarifications...
1) from what i could read, having read through the pissing contest in "what's better," i gathered that, generally speaking, destroyers for the climb, hades sainti for the boss? (+1 is not within my budget).
2) tank bosses in osode? or should i maintain arhat's full time, rather than an oh shit macro (for mortal revolution, etc)?
3) i have bb, so at 75, will have the 25% haste, to get my timers down to 15/22s. however, the war i'll be co-tanking with does not have 25% haste. should we go march-march (risking, from what i read, causing excess tp), or march/min (or madrigal)?
4) i've read conflicting reports on the use of counterstance on bosses. having little experience on bosses (well, extensive on LBC and LAC, but on blm), many of the posts i found had remarks like "of course you use counterstance on 2 bosses, and not on other 2," but they didn't clarify which bosses to use.
5) i'm "only" a 35 away from having usu legs. of course the only is in quotes, since 35 drop rates SUCK. anyways, should i get them, i found posts (i think it was aurik?) saying that usu legs outparsed byakko's haidate. is this true, and is this applicable to bosses, where the 7.5 acc might be more beneficial?
6) from what i can gather, with 0 h2h merits, meat for the climb, sushi for the boss (until 8/8 h2h, at which point some acc enhanced attack food, like marinara pizza or hedgehog pie is better)?
finally, any advice to a new tank on what to do to be best prepared for bosses? info on specific bosses would be greatly appreciated. i'm aware of the mechanics of each boss, and have tanked LBC and LAC on sam, but LBC was with an older group, and our group now is 6-8 ppl, and i want to do the best i possibly can to help us out.
thanks for any advice. sorry about the length of the post :3
correct
use an oh shit macro, mortal has plenty of time, mdt set is nice for discoid(if you already own one, dont bother otherwise) if you don't have stunners that don't get resisted2) tank bosses in osode? or should i maintain arhat's full time, rather than an oh shit macro (for mortal revolution, etc)
2 brds or brd+cor would be ideal, but march/min is fine since you'll probably be outhating a war cotank by a good margin3) i have bb, so at 75, will have the 25% haste, to get my timers down to 15/22s. however, the war i'll be co-tanking with does not have 25% haste. should we go march-march (risking, from what i read, causing excess tp), or march/min (or madrigal)?
counterstance on all but arra imo as revolution is dangerous with it up, mileage may vary(some prefer not to on LBC because it's melee can be rough but meh)4) i've read conflicting reports on the use of counterstance on bosses. having little experience on bosses (well, extensive on LBC and LAC, but on blm), many of the posts i found had remarks like "of course you use counterstance on 2 bosses, and not on other 2," but they didn't clarify which bosses to use.
Usu legs will NEVER outparse byakko's without set bonus. I don't care where you are.5) i'm "only" a 35 away from having usu legs. of course the only is in quotes, since 35 drop rates SUCK. anyways, should i get them, i found posts (i think it was aurik?) saying that usu legs outparsed byakko's haidate. is this true, and is this applicable to bosses, where the 7.5 acc might be more beneficial?
I'd just pop a pizza and be happy with it.6) from what i can gather, with 0 h2h merits, meat for the climb, sushi for the boss (until 8/8 h2h, at which point some acc enhanced attack food, like marinara pizza or hedgehog pie is better)?
1) Rly depends on your choice of food and your ability to hold hate. If using pizza and capping acc, destroyers are gonna win easily. Other than that it'll be debatable.
2) None of the above. Mirke/Togi/Enkidu, if its the choice between arhat and osode though, arhat, use your DD gear
3) My group goes w/ march march, its the shit, specially if the brd 2hrs. Makes the fight end much quicker.
4) I always use counterstance w/o counterstance mnk is just another dd/nin
5) Byakko's > usu. Usu for ws when acc capped (if not use shura). Not even a competition between the 2 legs.
6) Have a mnk w/ h2h merits tank >.>
but, to answer your question, I'd go w/ Pizza for boss.
What's an average time for shifting sky gems?
I don't want to spend my weekends sat in Rolanberry when I actually can play and overnight bazaaring isn't really an option atm at least.
TM Hooks +2 will be fine till Hades/Waghs, unless I'm forgetting something between there. Been a long time since I was that level, though. If you're not rolling +2s, then just find good +DMG with a low +Delay, I'll have a look at options when I'm not at work and see what I can find.
thanks for the tips. i've got togi, of course, but i worried about the -hp and that osode has a higher def rating.
and i fully intend on going 8/8 h2h, 5/5 counter/kicks, and probably 5/5 penance... just won't have all of those available to me prior to being asked to tank.
thanks for the info about usu legs... i kept trying to figure out why people said they were situationally better than byakko's, but i guess they thought situationally was full usu. i'll probably use them for howling fist, and stick to my shura legs +1 for AF.
as for MDT/MDB, i've got merman's earrings x2 and merman's rings x2 (from my rng). otherwise i think the only thing (other than osode i guess for the +10 stat?) is a lamia mantle +1. does discoid have a long enough charge time to swap in that gear? when it comes to stunning, unfortunately, as a transition from blm to mnk, the only likely stun we'll have is head butt, which i understand gets fairly well resisted on bosses. but, does head butt cause a build up in the stun resistance?
and time for me to get our group leader to sign some arhats for me >.>
do the WS gorgets only give bonus on first hit of a multi-hit WS?
First, your sig gave me a bonus on all my hits.
Second, accuracy on all hits, fTP on first hit.
@Martinius
Something to keep in mind, if only mnks are gonna be on the bosses, with rajas, black belt, melee/usu gloves, hades sainti and auspice you cap subtle blow without really giving up much in terms of offense, making for a tamer boss.
Penance should be capped as soon as you get a chance. If you have dual monks with capped penance you can keep it on the mob full-time. Again making for an easier mob. This comes in handy when doing gear nm's and frogs too since frog chorus and restoral spam can be annoying.
Of course none of this is necessary to beat any of the bosses but its something I use and so far I'm happy with the reduced tp moves from mobs.
Yes, but you should be fine w/o a mdt gear (~500 dmg with 6). Full time counterstance and cast :Ni right after discoid.
For you question about counterstance and boss :
- SSR boss, ZR boss, BR boss weakened => Cc full time
- BR unweakened => impossible to full time CC, it can hit for 500 non critical non counterstanced(depends on side though)
- AR boss : CC works but this time you need to use it to recast ichi and ni, unlike other bosses where you would mainly do :Ni after tp moves. I've never seen more than 1k damage with counterstance.
Depends how much you're undercutting
I tend to find JPs buy them on a much larger scale than other players... Norths go very quickly, South/Summer can go quickly if you have both... East sometimes is fast, sometimes is slow. West I've never sold because Despot is a cockmuncher and I haven't bothered with the other ones.

I do salvage avg 6-7 times a week as Monk, with the Set up Mnk, Drg/sam, thf, rdm, brd, cor(mule) as base group ls mates jion on weekends as whm, and dd.
1) hades are better for boss, if acc is capped or close I tend to use Destroyers as hate is never an issues when monk on boss except for LAC which charms.
2) Tank in Shura togi, the acc and att will shorten the fight and the acc helps with your counters. The - hp is not a big deal imo.
3) March + March is the best way to go imo, The DoT helps you with your hate control, Shadow casting, it wil help your War co-Tank as well and give you a cushion incase one song falls or haste falls for a few seconds.
4)I go with one healer and I do not use CS outside of getting hate after a charm on bosses. Reason being (if i am correct and other wiki is correct) it does not check for counter til after it checks for Shadows, then Evasion... with Slow II and Elegy only times I lose shadows is after AoE which is the only dmg I usually take and puts me at about 1100 hp so a Crit with counterstance on or double attack will kill me before the rdm has time to cure, also after AoE we remove status (paralyna or erase for bind) then cure as i can get shadows up faster. I prefer control then a 40% oh shit end the boss chance.
5) I did not use Usu legs on monk til I was 5/5, outside of hundred fist. (the attack is nice when haste dont matter) I also ws in Shura +1
6) Pizza is the best way to go overall in salvage imo. I tend to use Yellow curry or some meat most times though.
overall the bosses are not that hard and are really all about the support. Keep the monk hasted and the mob slowed and you will never have issues, co-tank is overrated imo because you will always do better with the monk in control. when the monk is hurt or mp is under 400 for the rdm monk should solo dd the mob to recover.
We open with SV March when that runs out I tend to use hundred fist, then spy's drink so I have the max haste the whole time I can. hate has never been an issues for us. as for tricks we really dont use any, for LBC if unlocked tank in front the whole time, if not always rotate one direction (counter clockwise for me) AC and BC straight tank with mages in range for Discoid and the support ready to Curaga to recover without wasting the lone Rdm's mp. for LAC use two mele full time so it only charms every 25% instead of timed (if you push its hp down fast enough it will always charm at 75%, 50%, 25% if you are slow the timer will get you and charm randomly, so we have the drg run at 52% so he has a head start to kite) and last thing is use Ichi soon as it starts casting Inertia stream or discharge.
long post ftl Good luck
I use Destroyers, some use Hades. In the end, the difference is going to be so small you won't notice any different.
Cream Soda is right on the TP build options. Togi, Usukane, hell even Scorpion Harness is better than Osode on bosses. Osode is great... for RNG and SAM WS. Don't ever use it on MNK.
If your group is comfortable with Salvage you shouldn't even bring any Arhat's pieces.
Penance and Auspice are more than you will need. Assuming your WAR is using a Great Axe there isn't going to be many problems at all.
My group may be a bit uncommon but we always have 3 DD on the boss with RDM, WHM and BRD as healers (BRD just covers Paralyna mostly), and we can deal with TP moves no problem. If you have a problem with the third person you can always just pull them off. Unless there is a massive imbalance in hate (which is hard with how much damage the boss hits for) recast timers don't matter all that much.
Here is a simple universal rule for Counterstance: If you are taking too much damage then stop using it.
The math is behind Byakko's Haidate unless you are some how getting more than 25% gear haste.
You definitely should get them though, you will need them for the full set, they are very good WS pants for SAM. That said, they aren't the stand out piece of the set. Also, the 35 for Usu legs doesn't have that bad of a drop rate compared to other pieces.
Marinara Pizza +1 and forget about anything else. That's just a general rule for me, it may not be perfect but food/sushi definitely isn't either.
The best thing you can do for tanking is making sure your support knows how to respond to the boss TP moves. For LAC have a macro to equip something that won't kill your co-tanks. Stand about 15 degrees to either side of the front of the mob, unless you are doing an unnerfed LBC. With good support the bosses are just a long but boring fight, nothing you do as a tank is going to make or break the encounter. Mortal Revolution, Discoid and Homing Missile are just more damage for the tank, nothing you really need to do to be prepared for them.
