That said, you want a BRD with a Storm Fife. You want a healer, ideally RDM or WHM if you're only going to have one. Most groups take a THF; I've made do with /THF, rarely. Past that...see above. My favorite DDs atm? WAR+SAM+DRG.
WAR: Voke! Also true of SAM/WAR...make sure that someone is voking everything. Get it off the puller and mages so the BRD (who is probably also the puller) doesn't go crazy and can do their job. Good damage, Retaliation is cool, doesn't need SJ to voke.
SAM: SAM is SE's new favorite job, and it shows. Can use Polearm on things like gears.
DRG: Angon makes things melt, and DRGs are not bad DDs either.
If I can have one of each, or SAM SAM DRG, I'm happy. There are some cast-heavy NMs where it's nice to have /NIN tanking, like frogs, or the Bhoot/Flayer NM in Arrapago. MNK/NINs were the staple for a long time, and they're still good. I would take a MNK/NIN in a second if they were a better player. Given an ideal world though, I think they've been eclipsed, though probably not by a huge amount. WARs can sub NIN if you're worried; we normally do /SAM these days (save a magic cell, eat a..something). Again, if you know two awesome DRKs and a MNK, and trust them...take them.
So you need DDs that are good and do damage. You need a BRD that's aggressive and has a Storm Fife or relic. You can have 2 healers or 1. RDM+WHM is nice. RDM+SCH is nice too. Nothing wrong with WHM+SCH either, really. AoE enspell+phalanx+stoneskin is pretty awesome. You do want someone in there with haste, so I wouldn't take SCH as the solo healer.
I actually like going in with 7: BRD DDx3 healer, another healer or a COR, and the THF in their own party. You could cut out one of the DDs or the 2nd healer/COR and be fine, I'm sure. That is down to preference; people make either setup work well. More than anything, you need at least one person who knows what they are doing, thinks quickly, can call cells while doing their job for the first several runs at least, and will be obeyed.
(I have to say that COR is pretty cool in Salvage, if you can fit them in. Especially if they manage to restore 2hours on the boss. COR doesn't replace a BRD, though.)
Jobs like RNG, SMN, BLM, BLU, etc. can be quite useful in Salvage, but from my experience, you want to take them in addition to the sort of group described above, as extra members. And for Zhayolm, you don't want to go above 6-7 people, and Arrapago is worse the more people you add, so... I'm sure you could do fine with one of those in your main group, but you did ask for "ideal".
