Job Change -> Red Mage or Warrior depending on situation

Why do you say WAR rather than WAR or SAM? I'm not sure what the situations are other than Tinnin though.

well i assume they want the pld for some sort of tank, in dyna and ein it's nice having both voke and utsu.. sam has to choose(and is an inferior DD to WAR if buffed properly and fighting trash mobs that aren't piercing weak)

Atonement isn't useable in Dynamis or Einherjar? I think he is talking about specific situations like Tinnin that doesn't take damage from Atonement or something, where obviously a WAR would be better than SAM but I'm trying to think of another example.

But war doesn't have to choose between a 6hit or 7hit when choosing between /sam and /nin. I'll concede when both are subbing their DD subs war will beat sam. But when they're /nin? I'd say DA and berserk for sam doesn't do as much as 15stp, hasso, and meditate do for war. Not to mention sam's superior PDT gear sets.

What would be the best area to farm earth clusters that's easily solo-able? I tried Gusgen but it's more lightning weather than earth weather.

    (specific coordinates would be helpful)

SAM's ws are severely lacking, it excels in situations where the monster has high defense but falls behind as you get closer to acc/attack caps. Of course, if you get high enough then polearm sam will start to compare to war even if the monster isn't piercing weak.. but the statement wasn't really meant to be a comparison between the 2 jobs so much as a comment on PLD without atonement being essentially useless.

Yeah, I was talking about Hydra type mobs; I don't have a specific need for the WS set for Vorpal or anything, I was just curious.

Better off tanking any type of hydra(real one, tinnin, nyzul) on a DD than PLD.

Yes, I'm aware. I wasn't saying I needed a Vorpal set for practical use, just in theory. Was curious, is all.

    The staves are at:
    o.O.o Final Fantasy XI Dats o.O.o - Elemental Staves+2

The files in the download are in folders named "ROM-46" and "ROM-127". Go to your FFXI folder (Program Files > Playonline > FFXI) and open the ROM folder. Open the folder named "46". Rename file 96.dat in your ROM>46 folder to something you'll remember and put the downloaded 96.DAT in its place.

Go back to the ROM folder and go to the 127 folder, replace all the files. (33-40.dat)

Don't delete any of the original files, just rename them. Adding "original" to the name would work.

That's it for taru. Repeat for the other races if you care. Same number of steps per race. Elvaan F and Mithra have alternative idle stances, lowtax stance for elvaan F is awesome. The mithra one is kinda meh.

    Hecatomb Cap, Sea Gorget, Brutal/Suppanomimi/Hollow
    Haubergeon +1, Hecatomb/Ares's Hands, Rajas/Acc Rings
    Cuch/Forager's Mantle, Life/Potent/Warwolf, Hecatomb, Hecatomb

Something like that. If you can get close enough or up to the crit. cap you could go for a DEX ring, Ancient Torque over Sea Gorget, etc. Some other changes depending on the acc.

Sea Torque for Vorpal? Hmm.. I'd go with Chiv. Chain/PCC since its multi-hit, and sea torques are lol for multi-hits.

Haha I actually meant Sea Gorget as well* wow opps.

I'm pretty sure you'd want to use something else besides Gorget though for weapon skill. Actually, torque is PROBABLY better than Gorget.

That was the popular belief months ago. Now is generally accepted Sea Gorgets increase the fTP multiplier by +0.1 and adds around 10 accuracy to all hits of a Weapon Skill. Thus, while the increased fTP multiplier only works for the first hit, the accuracy applies to all of them.

+0.1 ftp (first hit) and 10 acc (all hits) > the other options except for Ancient Torque if the DEX on it is getting you to the crit. cap.

Not enough testing has been done to definitely prove one way or another, but just saying what is more accepted and what works for me.

it's been tested multiple times that the Sea Gorgets +10 acc applies to all hits of a WS. the 0.1 ftp bonus applies to only the first hit however.
