I've never tutored anyone for the SATs, but I have tutored a kid for the SSAT (basically boarding school entrance exams) in math only. I was in 11th grade and my only credential was the highest SAT score out of all of the high school tutors at the center I worked at, so I was recommended for the private job by my boss.

My rate turned out to be $40/hour, mostly because it was my first private tutoring job and that was how much they offered (I thought it was a lot so I just said yes <_<). Was great, because I'd just have the guy take a practice exam from the book and then go over anything he got wrong in the last 15 minutes, and that would be an entire session. So I was really being paid for 15 minutes of actual work every hour. Taking practice tests was how I did well on the SATs, and it worked pretty well for him in the end, too.

Oh well, if people are willing to pay, let 'em pay. How long is a session? You should probably set an hourly rate if it's over an hour each.
I could not agree more. Only took the SAT once and scored a 1900. Never bothered with the ACT, since the college I'm currently going to didn't require an ACT score.

Seriously, the SAT is a joke, and people put too much hype into it. I only considered the math "hard", but even that was easy as shit.

I would say the older SAT (out of 1600) was much harder than the newer one. The older SAT Verbal section used college level vocabulary, while the Math section was middle school level, lol. I was able to score well only because I took about ten practice tests in the few weeks beforehand, so I knew most of the words and the style of the questions. I ended up taking the new one a year later, since I was in that transitional period where some schools take the old and some require the new, and I was able to get a 2200 without studying, so I will say that the new one is ridiculously easy, especially since they removed the whole vocab section.

I got shot in the face by a gang of hassidic jews right before the test, cornered and anally raped by a pack of stray dogs which somehow managed to shit down my throat, fell down some stairs and landed on my head, giving me multiple severe concussions, threw up in a geyser of blood, shit, and vodka all over myself, and was dragged into the SAT room. While I was being beaten by several arab terrorist suicide bombers, I managed to jack off onto the SAT test and got a perfect 2400. All without ever cracking open a study book.

There is no real point in "teaching", but you can be an effective babysitter - making sure they do the work because you'll be sitting right there with them.

For instance, one of the best ways to improve the reading score is to 1) get used to the test by taking lots of practice tests, 2) learn the most common words (princeton review has a list of about 400 that are the most common - they really are)

There isn't much you can do about someone's math score... if they can't add fractions or do basic algebra there isn't much hope for them... I've had a lot of friends who went to classes which either tried to teach them to do math all over again (they were frustrated, told themselves "this is stupid, i already know this" when they really didn't) or to skip the algebra and plug every answer A-D in to the equation (too slow to get any real score)

For writing, just go over the grammar rules commonly tested and get them in the habit of knowing what to look for.

The essay is incredibly stupid. They have hundreds of readers who are so bored out of their mind theyll hand out perfect scores for some decent writing and a cheap thrill or two. It's really more of a creative writing test. If you reference "To Kill a Mockingbird", they will toss it to the side like the other hundred thousand papers they read that did the same thing. I made up a book, some characters, and a plot that worked for the prompt. And force them to write legibly.

From my experience (and many people I know) taking an SAT class with their super super expert method of making you look brilliant on paper is generally a waste of time. Dedication is key and produces the highest scores. Your job as a tutor can help facilitate that.

I wrote my essay in the form of an AP essay and only got a 750. I'm fairly sure all you need is a "standard" essay with intro, body, and conclusion for an 800.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I like how people keep telling me how to tutor when that's not hat I asked

I know how to tutor kids I've been doing it for years. I just didn't know what to charge.

We set the price at 1260 per program which is 18 weeks (two times per week). We'll see if we can't get more at that price.

I only see one person who tried to tell you how to teach when it wasn't in response to something you said <_<

This is somewhat related, I suppose, so I guess I'll post it here?

Anyone have experience with Kaplan centers? I just saw an ad for Craigslist looking for teachers/tutors.. I had always thought you need at least a bachelor's in teaching or something similar for Kaplan, but all they listed as a requirement was a score of 90% or higher in any subject that you'd want to teach, which is awesome. Anyone done this before that can shed some light on the interview/"audition" process, as well as my chances? I applied for three subjects: SAT Math (780), SAT Verbal (800), and SAT Subject: Math 2 (800). My only prior experience is two years at Kumon Math & Reading Center (ghetto Kaplan, basically) and one private tutoring gig for SSAT one summer. Currently a nearby college student with major completely unrelated to education. Would rather not disclose college GPA, but would happily disclose high school GPA <_<

Everyone here is so smart or I'm probably bad at detecting sarcasm.
