Absolutely not. Though I would go out on a limb and say that the circle pad pro attachment greatly increases my enjoyment of the game.

The Wii U version is nice too, very pretty and has online. It just isn't needed to enjoy the game or to make it worthwhile. The same could be, and has been, said about the CPP. A matter of preference a bit more on that score I suppose.
