All the 75 jobs in my sig obviously had easy Maat fights, so I won't talk about them (well, BRD I did at 70, as it was my first job to 75, but it was still easy). Although I will mention that I totally failed to self-light on THF (Shark Bite -> Mandalic Stab) because I fumbled the macros and took too long between WSs. Oh, and that it was pretty easy to sleep bolt him.
All other jobs I've done at 66:
RDM: my most recent, and surprisingly easy. He did 49 damage to me total. Your nuke at 66 is Stone III, which actually has the side benefit of wearing Terra's while you CS nuke. I basically got the best possible nuking and enfeebling gear I could (most of which was from BLM, plus Sly Gauntlets, etc.), a ton of meds, INT potion, and cream puff. At the start, I ran right up and used Sleep 1 first thing, then bind, then proceeded with dispel spam and buffing myself (overwriting with sleep II). I CS'd and hit him with Stone III, recasting Stoneskin once, and then slept him through his CS, using that time to recover. After that, just alternate sleep and Stone III. I did not end up using most of my meds (VE and VE+1 were untouched). I did use Convert while Maat was napping through his CS.
MNK: Failed this the first time because I got the macro order wrong. This was my first 66 fight. After that loss, I made a list of instructions for every Maat fight thereafter and followed it. I am up in the air on Counterstance. I did use it on both attempts, and I did counter him a few times, but idk...seems kind of a wash.
SAM: I actually meditated with hat, slept the rest of the way to 200%, then waited for Meditate to come back up. WAY overkill. I still had 1 WS and a wing left to use when he gave up. I don't mind overkill, though. Better that than having to farm those damn demons again.
DRK: 1/4. I borrowed an M.kris for this. If you do that, start off with SEBW, then change to scythe afterwards. I tried this the other way around (sleep to 100, guillo > wing > guillo, then bw+kris zerg) the first 3 times. He will just mangle you too much for you to zerg decently by the time you're done WSing him. On try #4, I started with Absorb-Acc > SEBW, then changed to scythe > VE > wing > Guillo and he folded.
PLD: Too easy. I did manage to pick up an Espadon +1 for the fight. I used all DD gear and pizza. He didn't even get to WS. Tried to Cure IV once, and I bashed him. I think I even forgot to use my wing.
RNG: Also easy, went pretty much according to plan. I used gun and pot-au-feu. Sleep to 100 > Slug > Shadowbind > use potions > barrage > slug > EES > wing > slug. He folded with EES, though. I'd use Shadowbind whenever he uses EES, not necessarily right after your initial WS.
I still have DRG at 61 and SMN at 25, but I don't anticipate problems with those. Really, the key is to buy good gear and overprepare on meds. Gear and extra meds can be resold. I did not, however, use items like Blink Band/Stoneskin thing/Phalanx shield. I did use Lifedrinker Lars on BST Maat, and he is every bit as savage as advertised. Didn't need to do it, but again, I don't mind overkill, and I wanted to watch Maat get spidersmashed.
I have done DNC (at 75), which I didn't find to be all that difficult. Haven't tried COR yet, but I probably will eventually.
I have astral'd a few jobs for Maat's Cap so they're way underskilled and undergeared and I'm really too lazy to bother with AFs and such, therefore I have a few questions.
MNK seems to be the hardest by far, but is using a Hermes Quencher to flee from his 2h a good idea? That means no Icarus Wing though... worth it?
My SAM has no GK skill, just capped polearm. Does Penta spam perform well compared to GK SCing?
NIN has no Katana skill, but working on capping Ninjutsu. Is elemental wheel spam a good idea?
Should probably just bite the bullet and go skill up, dude.
MNK maat is honestly just random. If he feels like raping your face, he's going to rape your face. I'd say just use Icarus Wing and the normal melee strategy.
SAM definitely would be fine with polearm instead of GKT, not sure about the NIN thing though.
Edit: Can't type a three-letter abbreviation correctly hurrrrr
I have to agree. MNK Maat was pure random for me in terms of sucess. First run though I didn't use counterstance and was getting pretty beat taking 100+ a hit. Then after 100 Fists he just floored me. 2nd time I tried w/ counterstance but did something wrong that cost me the fight. 3rd time I did everything right but only had ~50ish HP left after both of use went apeshit on each other.
BST is laughably easy.
Just guessing you probably lost because of missed hits. I did also use sole sushi and blink band. I used gear such as potent belt, chiv chain, acc rings, spike earrings, etc. you know standard melee gear for Lv.66 multi-hit WS.
I did fail the first time because I hit macros out of order and did a single 200% TP Guillotine which took Maat down to 60%. The second time without me fat-fingering my macros I never came close to losing.
Maat took me three tries at 66. It's not hard, but there is some degree of luck involved with his choice of specials if you lose Third Eye (due to early expiration or Spinning Attack) or get stunned (from Tackle).Originally Posted by Corrderio
I also didn't realize until after the second try that Third Eye has no effect--without a message--if you have Blink on from a Blink Band.
THF was definitely the most annoying; I'd distinctly remembered people saying he didn't hit very hard and that a Spartan Hoplon was the way to go...total bullshit.
I can only imagine how annoying THF is. I read strats on Wiki and a lot of mixed ones. People saying he was impossible to hit so while they attempted to stab him he just went apeshit on them.
As for SAM, my idea was overkill but it was Meditate then sleep to 100 TP. Do a self SC then 2H, then if he's still alive use a Wing for a 6th WS. I guess you're right about spinning attack though.
I don't see a problem w/ Astral Burns. That's the only thing that kept my sanity leveling SMN. Besides that unless you put effort into capping your skills you're going to get raped hardcore.
Besides that, Level sync can have the same effect. I've seen plenty of dumbfucks who couldn't hit worth shit then said their combat skills were underleveled by like 40+ levels.
^ this. Especially when you've already leveled 10 jobs the normal way.
And honestly, fighting Maat when your skills and gear are all capped is not even fun.
At least a handicap that forces you to use alternative strategies makes it more interesting, and it's not like I'm hurting other players for doing so. It's just MNK one that seems really scary (and luck based).
