In semi-christian defense, there are a lot of Christians in other countries that DO fast during lent. Just it's pretty much nonexistent in the states.

A lot of Christians I know fast during certain times of the year when they are praying for something or for a certain situation.

Unless I'm doing something for hunger awareness, I fast Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and that's pretty much it. The devotion showed during Ramadhan has been something that has always impressed me since I first learned about it.

sadly, people nowadays forget the spirit of Ramadhan. they do the complete opposite..

TV is the best in Ramadhan, with the best shows prgrams, movies etc.
restaurants open til dawn, sheesha cafes, shoppings, ufff the food...best food ever in ramadhan, where people stuff their faces like no tomorrow (ramadhan should be the month of sacrifice, and hunger to feel for the poor..)

But what if they find a really sweet dumpster during the day and if they don't eat that food now it will be too rotten to eat. If the dude hasn't eaten in 2 days it's gotta suck for him.

When I used to play soccer there was a guy on our team who would have to fast and he could only play like half a game, I couldn't imagine how thirsty/hungry he was since some of those days were really hot and the dude had to run a lot.

Are you allowed to drink rain during the day since you could say god is giving it to you so it's cool?

If a bug flies into your mouth do you have to spit it out or can you swallow it when no one is looking?

The event or what they do? The event is called Ashoura or Ashura. They do various things in order to "partake in Husayn's suffering". Extreme forms of self mutilation are usually discouraged, but they do happen. They don't just self flagellate.
