I think the real reason behind circumcision is the fact that back in the day washing oneself/maintaining a good hygiene was much MUCH harder. Hence, infections occurred frequently, especially on the uncircumcised penis.

The reason for circumcision today however is pure tradition/religious ritual. I don't think it's a requirement by any religious text, however Abraham (a very important figure Judaism/Christianity/Islam) set the standard when he circumcised his own sons.

Basically, circumcision doesn't improve your dick or immunize it or whatever. The studies conducted in Africa for circumcised males having less cases of HIV/AIDS probably has more to do with the correlation between religious families/education(awareness). Awareness coming in handy when knowing that you gotta wrap it up.

Circumcision is a Jewish thing, not a Christian thing. There are an extremely few Christian groups that think something of it... mostly in Africa, lol.

American circumcision practice is largely attributed to this thought process:

Looks like they want to promote more circumcisions in America. I gotta say, if it really does help lower the chances of HIV even though people should be using condoms, and if America really has so much AIDS, i say go for it. Circumcision isn't really that big of an issue anyway, since it doesn't change the function.
