    Immigration loan question

I have a friend that is applying for a VISA but doesn't have the $2000 fee. Are there any types of loans or something they can apply for to make payments for it? I don't think the government offers a payment plan for it (or do they?)

And I don't think they'll be able to get a credit card with a $2000 limit without any credit history.

I'm sure there's got to be other immigrants that didn't have $2000 for a VISA that somehow got through it, other than just hiding out and being illegal.

I know that they do that in Canada but I'm fairly sure don't in the US (or at least the government does not give out loans for that).

Odds are their best bet would be to try and get a loan in their country. You could always cosign a loan for them, maybe that would help their chances of getting one here.

But what loan would that be, exactly? It's not a home equity loan or a home, auto, boat, or RV loan. Or a business loan, or practice loan, etc.

Can you just walk into the bank, speak with a loan guy and ask for a $2000 loan to pay for a VISA?

Can always just request a personal loan. USAA does them for vacation/unexpected expense/special purchases without issue I know. Usually don't even need to know why, and 2 grand isn't a lot to ask for. Depending on your history/background might be a little difficult since the economy still isn't friendly but can't hurt to try if you're already walking down that route.

Most banks wont, not to mention there is usually a minimum for loans through banks that is much higher then 2000. If you've had an account with them for a long time some times they'll make exceptions, but it's rare and only a few banks give the branches the authority to make that call. 90% of the time loan processing is sent out of the branch.

Perhaps they are the exception to the rule; but I have definitely gotten 1~3k loans from USAA in the past just to cover personal expenses from time to time when I didn't want to use or couldn't use a credit card to cover them.
