So it is time to pick keepers in one of my other leagues (well it has to be done by May,but better ask now I figure)

Of the roster below I get 3, thoughts? And yes, this team is pretty craptastic.

    Drew Brees, NO QB
    Matt Schaub, Hou QB
    Marion Barber, Dal RB
    Joseph Addai, Ind RB
    Chad Ochocinco, Cin WR
    Braylon Edwards, NYJ WR
    Michael Crabtree, SF WR
    Antonio Gates, SD TE
    Packers D/ST, GB D/ST
    Shayne Graham, Cin K
    Brian Westbrook, Phi RB
    Terrell Owens, Buf WR
    Santana Moss, Was WR
    Chad Henne, Mia QB
    Chris Chambers, KC WR

Brees is a no-brainer, Gates should have another solid year next year, then for the third spot I'd decide between Schaub, Ocho, and Crabs. I'd go with Schaub depending on your roster set-up. QB RB RB WR WR WR TE D K?

I agree on Brees and was thinking about Gates (though I know a lot of ppl hate a TE)

    The league setup is
    QB x2
    RB x2
    WR x3
    TE, D/ST, K

Having an elite TE is a big help though, there are only a few you can really count on week in and week out, Gates being one of them. Since it is a 2 QB league I would definitely keep Schaub also, that gives you 2 of the top QBs, then you can worry about RBs/WRs in the draft.

IDK, I'd be kind of curious how Crabtree could do with a full off-season with the team. That'd be a big gamble though, but the third spot could either be him or Schaub, with Schaub getting a slight edge due to proven productivity. Three WRs makes Crabtree seem more attractive though.

No question he has the ability, there just isn't anything to suggest the 49ers are going to turn into a solid passing team, and Vernon Davis is probably the first passing option. The fact that it's a 2 QB league makes it a really scarce position. Even if it is as shallow as a 10-team league, that means someone is starting Cassell or Hasselbeck.

Is there anything "special" about it, like, keep someone lose their draft spot?

nope, every team keeps 3 people. Thanks to my craptasticness in that league I also have the 2nd pick.

mmm yeah I'd go with brees and schaub, and then decide if you want solid production for a couple more years from Gates or the potentially crazy upside to Crabtree

Sure, VD is the first option... during Crabtree's rookie year, which he sat out half of.

Tyr, next year, week 16 championship in BGP. Week 17 has completely fucked me. Tom Brady likely to be pulled early, Brandon Marshall will sit, Vincent jackson will sit...

Eh, I'm not quite as high on Crabtree. Like I said earlier, it's not for lack of ability, I'm just not convinced Alex Smith will be lighting the world on fire.

Let's say Crabtree gets no better at all, and neither does Alex Smith, and the 49'ers stick with him anyway.

He averages 56.7 yards a game, and 3 td per year.

That's over 900 yards a season, year in and year out. 20% of the time he has weak games, the rest of the time he's always above his "average."

And that's like... worst case, barring major injury obviously.

And then there's the possibility that with Frank Gore running, Vernon Davis at TE, and fully developed/integrated Crabtree at wr, my dog could throw for 3k yards and 25 td's, and I don't even have a dog.

I think Crabtree's got a LOT of promise. Gotta remember that the dude didn't even come in until half the season was pretty much over. He picked up on complicated routes and NFL playbooks, executed fairly well for his lack of experience, and still put up pretty good numbers. I wouldn't be surprised if he had at last 900-1000 yards next year and maybe 5-6 TDs.

But would you prefer those stats from your WR or your TE? It all comes down to personal preference and how you see those players performing in the future. If you see Crabtree tearing shit up next year or Gates being over the hill then by all means keep Crabs. Crabs averaged about 4-5 catches for 50 yards a game with 2 TDs in 10 games, and I don't see those numbers increasing enough next year to warrant keeping him over elite TE numbers from Gates.

Crabtree's numbers are somewhat deceiving. He had 25-30ish yards in 2 games. In the other 8 he averaged like 70-75.

Like I said, if you see him improving a *tiny* bit with a full offseason with the team and as he develops in the pros, you're looking at 1000+ yards and 5+ td's, year in and year out for the next 5-8 years.

Crabtree has a ton of potential I agree, but are people really advocating taking him over Gates? I say Schaub Brees Gates easily, if you're in love with Crabs you can take use a draft pick on him likely a good bit after Gates would have been picked. Plus there is far less elite talent at the TE position, where as good WR's pop up on the waiver wire all the time.

I wasn't talking about taking him over Gates, I just started out saying him over Schaub potentially lol. What with Orlavsky taking over QB for the Texans next year and all

How is that deceiving? You count the bad games too. I agree with your hypothetical projections but I still value elite TE production over that for the immediate future. Also, do you want to use 1 of your 3 keeper slots every year on solid but not spectacular WR production?

As Fist said, new WRs are popping up all the time whether it be a Miles Austin or even a freakin' Devin Aromashodu who could put up those same stats next year.

Yeah, except those aren't worst case scenarios.

The reality is this dude's going to be hitting 1500 yards and 8-10 td a year.

Dude signed on his team's bye week and came in and put up pace for around 1k yards his rookie year.
