He made this deal for a few reasons. Firstly, because Giguere will be back with the goal tending coach that he had when Anaheim won the cup and he was playing his best, so that might help his game a little bit. On top of that, they'll have him for this year and next year, with a chance they might resign him after wards. But I doubt they will. The primary reason I think they signed him was to put Gustavsson as the backup, and giving him time to mature into a solid starting goaltender. I mean, he's good now, but he's still not up to snuff. So at the end of next year, not only will they gain the what? 6 or so mil from Giguere to use to pickup 1 or 2 solid players, but they can have Gustavsson step in and take the lead as head goaltender. On top of that, they managed to clear some cap space with the removal of Blake and Toskala, giving them more room to work with.Originally Posted by vagus

As far as Calgary is concerned (my team, if people remember from my posts waaaay back when), the trade definitely has some good and bad points. Bad being we lost Phaneuf obviously. He has the potential to be really good, but considering his best season was his rookie campaign 4 years ago, and he's only dropped since then, then it's not too bad. If he does develop into a solid Pronger'esk player, then yeah, sucks for us. But the trade was more so for an immediate impact. The loss of Sjostrom and that defensive prospect do kind of suck, but Freddie wasn't really a game breaking player for us and we are so deep defensively that the loss of 1 prospect won't hurt us as far as I'm concerned. Stajan and Hagman will definitely help our slumping offense, and if you look purely at the numbers from this season, Ian White is playing nearly exactly as well as Phaneuf for the fraction of the price. Mayers is just another tough guy, haha.
