We've been over this before, you can't make these cuts based on attendance. In 2004, Pittsburgh was dead last in attendance. In 2006 and 2007, the Caps were near the bottom. Both buildings are 100% full for this season. I agree on too many teams, but you can't make that call on straight attendance- fans are too fickle.

Yeah, then pittsburgh tanked for 2 years, got some draft picks, and all of a sudden is top dog. Same with Washington...lose for a couple years, draft Ovie, get fans.

Holy shit what a game!! Luongo and the rest of them looked like shit in the first but came back to win an epic game to maintain the division lead over Colorado. Canucks have now won 10 games this year after trailing after 40 minutes. Such an nerve racking game but love the results.

Like i said before, Bettman is gone at the end of the season. I expect 2 teams to be moved within the next 3-5 years. One to Southern Ontario and another one to an American city. I think Seattle would make a great market as there is nothing really between San Jose & Vancouver. Pacific Northwest has a strong minor league hockey system. Plus i want a road trip, Alberta suxs. Lol.

Mind you, all this means nothing if the NHL isn't back on ESPN.

Uh, Versus' contract extends through the '10-'11 season. Unless you mean after that, both ESPN and the NHL would be silly to not get hockey on a better channel (unless ESPN shows even less hockey than Versus does now).

Definitely agree that there are too many teams, especially in the South. But I do think a good team could thrive in a place like Nashville because honestly, what the fuck else is there to do in Nashville? But as for the deep South, it's just not happening. Caps obviously play those teams all the time, and the buildings are empty.

Couldn't agree more about moving a team to Seattle. Good history there, they just lost the Sonics, and they went apeshit for their MLS team.

Here is the problem I see with the teams in the south right now. They aren't being marketed to groups in the south that might actually want to go. I remember a few years ago when the capitals were garbage, even after they drafted Ovechkin. But the team was smart in marketing the Capitals to college students and developed a decent fan base, granted like 70% of them are band wagoners but who gives a shit? As long as they keep being competitive they will have that dedicated fan base and it will continue to be one of the best arenas as far as energy is concerned.

Right now a lot of the owners and GMs of the southern teams are fucking terrible. Bad drafting, bad team development, and bad marketing all add up to a sub par product that no one wants to fucking see. A place like Hamilton would make money yes but a fucking monkey could sell hockey in Hamilton. If there was decent business men with a good vision on how to appeal to the markets they're in and not a string of shady owners with questionable financial situations, I'm looking at you Bags, then the teams in the south would do decent.

The GMs unanimously passed this rule proposition to the other parties involved:
"A lateral, back pressure or blindside hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact is not permitted.

A violation of the above will result in a minor or major penalty and shall be reviewed for possible supplemental discipline."



Other GM meeting proposals incoude:
AHL switches from 3-man officiating to a 4-man officiating system for at least 40% of its games, NHL willing to provide financial support for extra referees.

First tiebreaker at season's end will be regulation wins rather than overall wins.

I don't understand how college students in the southern areas don't watch a NHL game. They offer some insane prices. Tampa was offering 2 tickets, 2 hot dogs and 2 beers plus FREE parking for like $20. I think Nashville had all you can eat hot dogs or beer one night. For me to check out a Canuck's game in the nosebleeds is close to $75 for a ticket. Still gotta include the ticket for the date, food & beer.

I know it's all about supply and demand as Canada are fiends for hockey, but at such low prices how can you not even consider checking it out? Lol. I'm curious how much tickets for your team are.

Pens tickets are like $90-140 for the regular seats IIRC, some nosebleeds are $60-75, some are $200ish. I always just go on Student Rush games where with a college or HS ID, you can camp outside the arena and they set aside 400-800 seats (plus any unsold individual seats within the stadium as well as standing room only) and they let students in for $20 each until they run out of seats (and obviously the ones at the front of the line also get the best remaining seats). An association I'm a part of at college also offers tickets+bus transportation for $35 a couple times a season. All in all, I never buy regular season tickets at full price. My birthday gift back at the end of last summer was 2 tickets for the final regular season game at Mellon Arena this April for over $200 apiece (usually like $100ish apiece) and thats the only time I've bought full price tickets, and even then, I wasn't the one paying.

Everything is either Student Rush, through my university club, or people having an extra ticket.
