We still can't put away bad teams though. Up 3-0 on the injured Thrashers (in front of about 500 fans in Atlanta, seriously wtf it looked like a Nats game) and we need an empty net goal and still only win by one. Boudreau was pissed and I don't blame him.

And by my count Varlamov is now 9-0-1 to start his career. The record (I looked it up this morning) to start a career without a defeat is Lalime with 16 in 97-98. Varly of course lost in the playoffs, but I don't think that counts toward that record.

No, that means one shootout loss, which counts as a tie (and therefore makes the stats compatible with older records). The record is for games without a loss, so I think that still counts. Although I could certainly be wrong.

This is definitely not an argument for zomg Varly is the best goalie ever. He still gives up weak goals and has real flaws. Just more of a statistical oddity.

Yeah, that's true. It's like "protecting a lead" is synonymous with "trying to not score anymore" and we end up racking up giveaways and taking bad penalties. We've looked pretty damn good recently, and 5 straight wins is nothing to scoff at, but a lot of that has been Theo or Varly standing on their heads. And giving up 40+ shots in back-to-back games is not a good indicator for sustaining our streak.
