The fact that anyone is, even in the slightest bit, condoning the guy's actions in hitting someone else's child is sickening.

Also love how some are assuming that the woman did nothing to settle her child down, or that the child was crying for an extended period of time after the initial warning... despite the fact that the article clearly states that the man started hitting the kid only moments after his warning.

I will agree with Ivve on one point though, in that the woman was fucking retarded for not getting ahold of security once the guy made his threat. Though if we want to play the assumption game, she may not have had much time to do so considering the slapping occurred only moments later.

In a way I can't blame the guy. I hate going into stores with kids crying and parents not trying to calm them down or trying to ignore it. That's usually why I don't go into stores during busy hours.

Interestingly, one of the better methods of handleling crying kids is to let them tire themselves out rather than placating them, because that teaches them that they can't get anything out of you via that avenue.

I can't agree that the man was anywhere close to right when he laid a hand on the woman's child but I do agree that corporal punishment has it's uses. I remember the first time I swore as a kid and my mom heard. She grabbed my face so hard I thought it would be stuck in a puckered look forever when she let go. Don't beat the shit out of your kids but a small smack on the cheek or butt gets the point across.

Best example was a mother I saw in the store a while ago. Her kid was throwing stuff out of the carriage. She game two verbal warnings and when he did it again he got a small smack. Course he cried for like 2 seconds but after that it was like he forgot it happened. He left everything alone after that too.

Most parents try to calm their kids, they really do. Despite the "horror stories", most parents are really decent and try really damn hard to keep their kids in line. At any given moment, you are probably in a public place with 100 kids, but only notice about 5 of them making asses of themselves. Welcome to every sector of society, where a certain 5% of the population makes the lives miserable of the other 95%. Sometimes, especially with the younger ones, it's really fucking hard, and it's frustrating. Any parent who tells you it isn't frustrating is lying. By the way, i have not said or implied that you can't hit your kid, i don't think that if you don't overdo it, it would cause some form of metal harm. Hitting them is certainly a good idea if for whatever reason you need them to shut up as quickly as possible, but if you want them to stop crying in order to get attention/get something it is probably a good idea to let them know that they're not going to get it through that way, if they can get it at all.

It would seem that hitting them/as opposed to ignoring the crying is an issue of quick solution to an inmediate problem or a long term solution to a greater goal.

It depends on what you want, or what you're most comfortable with.
