I think people keep forgetting that the kid was 2 years old. From now on when someone says what parents should do really you should specify what age of the child you are talking about because there is a HUGE difference between different ages of kids and how you handle them in difficult situations. A 2 year old crying is different from a 5 or 6 year old crying is different from a 10 year old crying.
Not worried about the slapping, as kids should get Chris Brown once in awhile. Bigger issue is why does a 61 year old man have a 2 year old child.
Please, beat the kids twice a day once they reach 6 months old. That way, they're used to it & won't go whining to the authorities about it when they get older.
I think kids are the one topic in the world where people think that "Well you've never done it so you're not allowed to comment" is actually considered a legitimate response. Most people have never done a study on artificial sweetener, played a professional sport, participated in a DJ battle, or shot a cat in the head with an arrow either. Nobody (okay, aaaaaaaalmost nobody) gets touchy about commentary on any of those things, but the second anyone questions someone's parenting abilities, all the parents come out of the woodwork to tell the person who has the audacity to question one of their own that they're a clueless fuckwit. Why so defensive?
I don't really have a problem with people doing commentary on children, but it's when people try to passoff views on parenting and justifying it with asinine replies like "I've worked in a daycare, I watched my sister's kids, I babysat when I was 14, etc and so on". My wife has worked as a teacher or director in the child care field for almost 9 years now. She has a degree in early childhood development, a CDA, an early childhood cert, and any other imagineable certification that goes along with raising children. She had those long before our first child was born. It's not the same. Working with other people's children is great, you learn the essentials. You can change a diaper, make a bottle, entertain a kid and make them happy. You may even go as far as to know it's needs and wants. What you don't have is a blank chalkboard to write on. When you care for someone else's child, you have boudries, whether you are babysitting or teaching. You have to adhere to certain scopes that either the state (in the case of daycares) or the parents set forth. With your own kid, you are the author. You write on the chalkboard that is your child. You have a responsibility to that child that you don't have in any other situation. Kids look at you, react to you, and you to them much differently. Other than possibly raising a relative, there's no substitute for bringing up your own child.
I'm from spam, sweetheart. We run a different game there. Nothing wrong with being a "fucking golden girls freak," but way to come off weird.
Lots of people are "armchair strategists" when it comes to things like the war in Iraq or foreign policy, but few have actually been in any kind of related decision making position. Most people would be completely out of their depth if they ever had to take that on, and no amount of book reading can prepare a person for that sort of job. A lot of people don't understand the inner workings of politics or some of fragile relationships that we have with other countries due to past actions and present involvements. They truly do not have the first clue what it takes to actually handle that particular job. That doesn't necessarily mean that they can't apply some common sense and come up with a decent thought regarding the situation being discussed. That's all I'm saying.Originally Posted by Stumblingdrunk

If someone with kids says that sometimes they spank them as a last resort when letting them cry out their tantrums or whatever just isn't an option, it's okay since they have kids. They have passed muster and are now qualified to say that without someone else telling them they're moron for armchair parenting.
While it's true that I cannot possibly know whether or not the woman in the news story is actually a good parent, neither can anyone who has kids just based on the fact that they have kids. People throughout the thread have said things like, "Maybe she's a good kid most of the time and is just having a bad day." Well maybe she's just a fucking rotten kid. Maybe this woman is a good parent and maybe she's not, but we don't have the details to know and really nobody can say for sure. Saying that someone else's assumption that she's a bad parent is somehow more unfounded than the assumption she's a good parent based on the opinion holder's child-having status seems like really poor logic.
I will say this: I don't know how to raise a child. I don't have one. I don't need to know how to raise one to see (or hear, as the case may be) that someone else's kid is behaving like a total asshole. Maybe you can't help that, but with the number of horrible misbehaving little shits there are running around unchecked, your kid is probably going to get lumped in with those kids in my mind. Don't get mad at me for thinking you're a terrible parent or your kid is a spoiled brat; get mad at the people who really fit that criteria that give you such a bad name.
Those subjects arent the same as a child. DJ Battle = Child? Artificial Sweetner = Child? etc....
They dont hold the same weight. So yeah, you really cant say shit until you have been there. That would be like me downplaying your period. I've bleed before, not out of my dick, but meh, it cant be that bad. I got a cramp once, its probably the same as menstrual cramps Right?
I won't call them morons, or accuse them of armchair parenting,(for obvious reasons) but i will tell anyone, parent or not, that corporal punishment is lazy discipline, and its not just about Fragile psyches
No one is arguing that its not possible she was a shitty mother, there were really only two things to argue here, the first being was the man right, and the second, even if the mans actions were wrong, can we in any way sympathize with the man's frustration. We're simply arguing that passing judgment on the woman(or any parent in a similar situation) was impossible, not because we know she's a good mother, but because we recognize the enormous number of possible reasons she may have been in this position We're not objecting to the thought that she "might" be a bad mother, we, well I, object to the rush to judgment.
You really can't, knowing the ridiculousness of thinking in generalities and making assumptions, say "It's not my fault that i choose to hold everyone accountable for the mistakes of a few".
Isn't kid about the age that they have teeth coming through? I would have thought having chunks of enamal trying to force their way out of your flesh is a pretty fucking good reason to cry. Wisdom teeth hurt like a bitch after all. If not then fuck the little bastard, old guy should have done everyone a favour and drop kicked the little bastard out of the store, then given the women a fifteen minute rant about how shes obviously a fucking terrible mother for not being able to make a 2 year old stop crying imediately.
You're actually misconstruing the passion and involvement between the two, as well as the human component. Read the healthcare thread and the passion and involvement behind that. Even the DJ thread, you had the ignorant people praising JP and the knowledge heads saying no no no.
What you're considering the defining moment is people against abusing a two year old and defining it's creator and caretaker based on unknown circumstances simply for the fact of ones own comfort.
Kids aren't the "one topic in the world," it comes down to basic decency and human compassion versus hobby passion, which on a video game forum comes pretty fucking close to being one and the same.
Just saying, as the topic continued to be discussed, as with most topics it became a little more broad at times than just what was included in the OP. And the vibe I continually got was OH HOW DARE YOU COMMENT, YOU NONPARENT, about all subjects that came up. As for me, I don't spend time make excuses for everyone on earth. If someone behaves like an asshole for the 30 seconds they're around me during their lifetime, I'm not going to try to dream up some reason that they may have been doing whatever it is they were doing to piss other people off. The fact of the matter is that no matter the reasoning behind it, behaving like an inconsiderate dick is behaving like an inconsiderate dick. Maybe some people can't help looking that way sometimes, but making excuse after excuse instead of just owning the behavior for what it is... That's some pretty typical American shit right there.
I don't think she's a bad mother based on her kid crying; I think she's a bad mom for not going to the management as soon as someone made a threat to physically harm her child. I think she was possibly being inconsiderate by letting her kid wail for an extended period of time (based on the details given in the story, this seems to be what happened), but being inconsiderate is far from accusing her of bad parenting. Few people seem willing to even admit that parents do sometimes lack consideration for the rest of us because they do have an inflated sense of self-importance once they have kids. Parents truly believe most of the time that they and their priorities are more important than everyone around them, and nobody else is allowed to comment on their behavior or the behavior of their kids. That is not just ridiculous, but also a little bit crazy.
Over the course of this thread, parents have made it pretty clear that they don't give a shit about whether or not screaming children are annoying to other people. The main excuses are that we don't live in a perfect world or that they have other shit to do and they don't have the time to remove their disruptive kids from the store. More garbage that magically excuses all bad behavior. It's a little gross. We don't live in a perfect world guys, so that dude who took your parking spot in the parking lot isn't an asshole. I have other shit to do, so I need to park in this handicapped space to reduce the amount of time I'll spend on this errand. Nah man. It's still asshole behavior. I don't have any problems seeing that I'm being rude by talking on my cell phone at certain times, even if I'm talking on my cell phone because the call is really really important to me. Sometimes I behave like a fucking asshole, but I don't try to excuse it with a bunch of dumb reasons and then tell everyone that if they're not a military wife, they can't possibly comprehend or judge my behavior.
That's true, but for the most part nobody tried to pull this whole "Yeah well you've never been a DJ so you can't possibly judge the quality of this music" on any of the people commenting. The only time that people really busted out the passion in earnest on one another was after the OP came in swinging, and being super defensive instead of being able to take criticism.Originally Posted by The Finesse

Well, if you've had a charlie horse then you pretty much get it. It's similar, just in another part of your body. I'm not part of the crew who's going to tell you that you can't possibly imagine what menstrual pain might be like, although I will say it's fucking annoying at times. If you can imagine having a charlie horse in your dick every couple of hours or so for a week, you're right on track. And no, menstrual pain does not give me a ticket to be an asshole to other people all week long no matter how much I may feel like it.Originally Posted by Dimmauk
It is amazing how this thread went from a bunch of idiots spewing a bunch of incoherent crap to a few people actually making some very good points. I agree with the brave little toaster dude that we can't rush judgment on the mother being a bad parent just because her kid was crying. The child is 2 years old and at that age they cannot fully talk yet to say why they are crying and a crying 2 year old does not make her automatically inconsiderate or a bad parent. Also it was a supermarket not a restaurant no matter how much you want to claim they are the same they are different.
I also very much agree with Ivve that her potential bad parenting is in the fact that she was not more protective of her child and she did not do enough to keep her child from getting hit by some random old dude. She should have gone to management as soon as the threat was made not after her child was hit. This also isn't a guarantee because I don't know if there was some other circumstance that made her make the choice she did. Either way both of you have very good points about the situation.
What category do I fall under?
I'm glad you all, the obvious mature ones, have continued this topic 6 pages and about a week past when it was a dead horse, back at the time I started trolling. I hope by now, my man Milkster et al. have stopped bragging on vent, mumble, and their daily phone call to their mother about how well you won an argument by stuffing your opinion down any detractor's throat. Must be a truly slow news week.
How wonderful it is to see the true definition of irony in effect.
