Maybe I'm just being too cynical.
Thank you. This was the exact answer I was looking for and how I feel about the situation.

Of course the right is against teaching their kids how to learn. Learning how to learn would include things like critical thinking and reasoning skills, and that sort of stuff leads to children questioning and analyzing what they're taught... and socialism, and stuff, right?

Don't think! Memorize! Thinking is for the commies.

Let's just teach to the standardized test. What could go wrong?!

I guarantee no children will be left behind.

    1) White House-released lesson plans ask questions like "How can you help the president" instead of "How can you help your country?"
    2) Why should millions of students stop learning in order to listen to Obama talk about why it's important to learn, then do more activities about why it's important to learn? It makes so sense. These children should be spending their days learning instead of being told by the 2948th teacher/administrator/parent/parole officer to "work hard in school".

I mean, neither is a catastrophe, but this speech, with a goal to inspire America's children, doesn't really make sense. The lesson plans for the event combined with health care reform debate will likely make this speech highly political in nature, and I don't support wasting even more school time because a president wants to say something.

I love how you omit the fact that the "lesson plan" is voluntary and up to the districts to decide which questions to choose. Also didn't Reagan do the exact same thing? Regardless I blame noone but obama for this. If he wasn't so goddamn spineless and actually, you know lead the fucking country instead of licking his finger and going with the wind we might actually get something done. He constantly caves in for the sake of bipartisanship and the results we have these half ass attempts at changes which really isn't change at all. But I digress, we should keep our presidents limited to reading "my pet goat" with a retarded smirk on his face when we were attack by extremists.

It's one thing for a student to be listening to a teacher day in and day out about how they should be learning, and to keep a good attitude about everything. Seeing someone every day drowns the message from them.

Hearing it from the goddamn president might actually make the words stick with them. It's a one time event for most students, so it will leave a lasting impression in their heads. It's the goddamn president emphasizing the importance of their education. I'd say that's a valid way to boost the education system.

Also, I love Leif's counter-arguments. "Yeah, true, ok you're right. But you're still wrong."

Yeah because we all know what the President says at the press conferences sticks with the people and it leaves a lasting impression on us all.

GTFO with that weak ass shit. He is the President, quit your idolizing.

    uh?

There's quite the difference between a phrase uttered by someone you see every day, and something told to you by someone you rarely see or is famous.

    How is this idolizing?

edit: Also, do grade school/high school students watch press conferences of the president every day?

Calling NCLB a "Republican" program is largely inaccurate. Though, let's look at it realistically. Before, teachers weren't teaching students anything. Today, they at least teach the test.

A true education reform package would be destroying the Department of Education with the biggest explosives one could find, implementing nationwide voucher programs, cutting funding for K-12 schools, and providing more funding for need and merit-based aid via grants and loans for undergraduate students.

Before you start talking about whether or not kids across America should be listening to Obama September 8th, at least admit Democrats don't know the first thing about education reform. They know quite a lot, however, about teacher unions.

That's one reason of many why I don't think Obama has anything productive to say.

Same. Teaching the test sucked for people that were way smarter than some of the other students. I got into more trouble cause I finished my work before anyone, and had to sit around waiting for others to catch up. I'm sure it was Democrats fault for allowing crappy teachers to teach. Nevermind this was Texas, the land of Right wing education.

Just because he is the President, or he is famous, doesn't mean his words will have a lasting effect on anyone or they are right. I say idolizing because it seems because he is of the famous or governmental stature that we should listen to him.

I know I watched most of the recaps of Press Conferences when I was growing up. But I don't represent the majority.

Heading out on vacation, take it easy guys. Better be 10+ pages when I get back!

When no child gets left behind, everyone else slows down.

The best teachers I ever had would make it through about half of the year, and promptly tell us that we already knew everything we needed for the standardized final exam. Everything after that was a nice bonus. 'Teaching to the test' just gives you a larger group of average students. Generally though, the quality of the teacher had far more to do with student success than what was on the tests.

    Fox news logic:
Fact: There were young girls in 1990.
Fact: Young girls in 1990 were raped.
Fact: Young girls in 1990 were murdered.
Fact: Young girls in 1990 were raped and murdered.
Fact: Glenn Beck was around in 1990.
Fact: Glenn Beck did not acknowledge of his rape and murder.
Fact: Glenn Beck did not deny of his rape and murder.

    Therefor;
Glenn Beck raped and killed a young girl in 1990.

Who the fuck didn't beat you enough growing up. You're saying no one before NCLB never learned anything? Jesus christ the amount of dip in this shit is giving me staples.

Well, at least we can say BG is equal opportunity since we have official mental retards posting here.

The school where I work has designated an area for students "who are adamant about not watching it and might become disruptive" to go to and do work; I don't see any reason for anything else to be done. It's going to be 20 minutes max.

In other words you have no Idea.

btw Isn't giving vouchers out of the expense of Tax payer money against the Conservative doctrine? If you're gonna consistantly harp on about limited government at least have the balls like some Libertarians to declare it unconstitutional. As retarded as the claim by them is they at least stick to their guns and not cherry pick what they like and don't like about it.

Conservatives could find fault with him saving a puppy. I'm so sick of the right wing making up problems when they lack any real issues. He drank a bud lite so he's a communists. He lowered taxes on the middle class so he's a Marxists. He's attempting to push through health care reform so he's a Nazi who wants to kill your grandma. He was born in Hawaii, he must be a illegal immigrant. Now he's trying to inspire children to get an education so he's brainwashing people.

The GOP doesn't have anything to stand on so they just make up the difference with large piles of bullshit. They should make it a requirement that you should be able to complete a 5th grade math question before voting because I'm tired of the short bus getting a say in the operation of the country. That's not to say the democrats aren't a pile either, but at least what I hear from them is more grounded in reality. The shit coming from the GoP sounds like a bad horror movie. Every issue, regardless of how trivial is some attempt to take everyone's freedom away or to enslave the white man. How is it possible they keep getting reelected. Who goes to the voting booth and says "I know who I want running the country, chicken little!".

It bothers me even more that people actually buy into this BS. People actually think he's trying to brain wash students, he's a secret Muslim or that he was born in Kenya. How many town halls have there been where some old lady gets up an screams about death panels. The whole time people who take the time to research this crap have to put out brush fires. I shouldn't have to explain why Obama isn't going to kill your grandma. Just like no one should have to explain why he's not brainwashing students. We have real problems that should be addressed and we spend our time arguing over worthless non-issues like this. I'm tired of the feigned outrage, fox noise, ignorant right wingers who can't be bothered to fact check their own beliefs. It's just sad...
