I found that elemental shotguns downed them fast.

shock for the little fast ones, caustic for the big blue ones, fire for the green ones.
non elemental guns do shit to them.
Alrighty, good to hear. I'll just tough it out and finish the game up then. So glad it doesn't have an playtime counter on it....it's definitely up past the 60hr mark for me, especially after the amount of time I wasted on Moxxi/Claptrap DLC.
Hopefully I'll have the cash to get Borderlands 2 within the month it comes out so I can enjoy it co-op with people.
Sorry for the necro, but in light of Borderlands 2, my friends and I decided to give the GotY edition a whirl. We're having a ton of fun, but we were unsure on how to progress through the DLC. I've heard some say to go towards the end of playthrough 1, clear all DLC, then start playthrough 2, and do DLC again, but I wasn't sure how that all worked. Any tips? Thank you.
The order gets messed up because of how they increased the level cap overtime which makes it really annoying and hard to avoid overleveling.
Google the borderlands wiki, they have a guide on there that details the optimun leveling process / playthrough.
I picked up the game for the first time from the Steam Summer sale, so I was in the same boat. What I did was original game through Sledge (first block of missions), then the Dr. Zed dlc. Did 2nd block of story missions, then a couple General Knoxx & upgraded ammo stockpiles, then played through the Claptrap dlc. Did third block of missions, back to Knoxx to farm exp, finished main storyline, then went back & finished Knoxx.
I found that if you stay in a vehicle while leveling up, you stay at the same level as when you first entered. In the Knoxx dlc in the "Salt Flats" zone there are these giant spider mobs that will give 4300 exp from level 35~40, 2300 from 41~43ish. There is also a NM, Skyscraper, that gives 20k+ from 35~40. Great mobs to farm for exp if you are using the Monster. The Monster's homing missles make short work of these mobs & you can kill them from the highways for safety.
No one should ever need to "grind" xp in Borderlands. The problem is leveling too quickly for the content and the tricky level scaling of the game after certain conditions.
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/28/bo...llection-on-s/Gearbox's eyes are affixed on Borderlands 2, but it's still building onto the series' debut. Studio head Randy Pitchford just announced at the company's PAX Prime panel that Borderlands' Steam version will add "BTest," an update that will allow Gearbox to gather play data (weapon use, player tactics, etc.) to be fed into Borderlands 2.
Perhaps more exciting for players, the B Test update will also bring support for Steam Cloud saving.
Bought GOTY on Steam during that sale. This make me happy,
